Chania - a city in southern Greece, on the north-west coast of Crete, on the Gulf of Chania. Population - approximately 55,000. The ancient settlement of Kydonia, which existed as early as 3400 B.C. was in the 13th century conquered, expanded and renamed La Canea by the Venetians.
One of the three largest cities in Crete - until 1971 the administrative center of the island.
