I _REALLY_ LOVE that the shots of all the mermaids swimming to and then surrounding the boat feels like an impending shark attack, the predators circling their target, like a feeding frenzy
Me too! I think the juxtaposition of their beautiful human halfs enticing the sailors and then the cut to the tails beneath is fantastic, and it really shows what dangerous and clever hunters they are
The way they animated them swimming in the water is so good. It doesn’t just look like actresses with their legs shoved in a fake tail, they look like fish.
I love how the second verse turns into: Come all you pretty fair maids Whoever you may be Who love a jolly sailor bold That plows the raging sea The pirates probably just hear her continuing the first verse but the other sirens (the pretty fair maids) hear this version. She's calling the other sirens so they can take the pirates down toghether.
I thought she started to summon/call the other mermaids when they do the first underwater shot of her fin swishing in the water. Looks like some kind of spell casting like pearlescent stuff shimmering off her tail if that makes sense. Either way, I agree. She was definitely saying, "It's dinner time!"
@@an0ana she would have probably been making a noise to tell the other mermaids that she was there. That's the reason she sung as well to make noise further away
0:13 I still remember the moment I saw this scene in the cinema. When the mermaid showed on the screen, all audience were shocked by her beauty and said "wow" .
though she has every intention of harming them, the first mermaid also looks rather curious about them. It's probably been a long time since men have come to that part of the ocean, so she is wondering what has drawn these strange men into their domain. And I love the old guy who pulled the knife when he saw her, if you want him throughout the scene he keeps the knife drawn and stares down the other mermaids as they close in. He's not affected by their spell and he's gonna go down fighting them they attack (in fact I think he's the one they take out first in their attack).
It is so scary when she starts to sing and they show her fellow mermaids from under the boat, swimming up like a bunch of sharks coming in for a feeding frenzy
The idea of Mermaids always creeped me out as a kid. They are always portrayed as people who are half fish, but never as fish who are half people. They are a predator that evolves not only to look like it's easiest prey, but in many versions is intelligent enough to speak English or whatever common language they hear from below boats to attract said prey. Id like to think this version is accurate in the 'feeds like sharks/ocean predators' department, but a real mermaid, if ever one existed, would not comprehend language but just parrot phrases at/back to sailers to lure them to the water, as the vocal cords from their human-Idk throat would allow for such "siren" calls.
It is accurate. Or at least more accurate to the original legends than most modern portrayals. Mermaids aren't sweet or nice, traditionally they'd seduce men and then rape, drown, and eat them. You know- for kids!
Well, depends on which version of the myth you're talking about (some versions claim it's how they reproduce). They all pretty much do eat people though.
The duality of under/above water was shot phenomenally here. We have plenty of shots that cover the mermaids' "eye-candy" forms above water as well their dark, ominous forms below water. This is also mirrored in the music, where we hear the mermaid's resonant ballad (can we take a second to realize that the mermaid just mimicked Scrum's song back at him? What a chilling way to denote alien behavior!), over Zimmer's soundtrack, and interesting fact, they have the same key center in A minor, which is why they blend so smoothly. I daresay I need to mention that the "Mermaids" track, in addition to being one of the most prevalent in the film, is one of my personal favorite scores in the Pirates series, and there are some tough songs to beat in there. Another fun tidbit about this song is that the line from the ballad she chose to sing, "Come all ye pretty fair maids / wherever you may be / who love a jolly sailor bold / that ploughs the raging sea", is supposed to give a feeling of solidarity in the love song, reaching out to all the fair maids who love a sailor who might not come back on land... but here, the double entendre is that she's singing to her sisters as they swarm the boat! The lighting, music, and angles were all done superbly and this scene will give me chills to this day.
The original trilogy films are beautifully crafted masterpieces with director Gore Verbinski at the helm. 4 & 5 were not that, but this scene, oh my goodness. This is top tier Pirates of the Caribbean magic. Second only to the Sinking of HMS Endeavour & Cutler Beckett's Death scene.
I love how they actually made the tails a reasonable length, like 2x the length of their bodies, compared to most interpretations where the tail is like the little mermaid: way too anatomically short
Yes, I noticed at 1:15 when she starts off singing, "My heart is pierced by Cupid" It's normal, but as soon as she gets to the words, "Glittering Gold" 1:20 her voice begins to echo. Then, when she sings, "Come all you pretty fair maids" 1:30 Her voice gets deeper because she's calling her fellow sirens to partake in attacking the men. After all of the other sirens show up, her voice echos further because of their power as a whole. Very very smart!

Mermaids don't do what those creatures did on that scene. What I think the creators did was mix sirens and mermaids together. Mermaids sink ships then eat the men that fell in the water. Sirens lure men to jump in the water with them and then eat them. These creatures hunted the men. One of them sang an enchanting song like both sirens and mermaids. Then she pulled the man who thought that he was going to be kissed into the water. Well almost. That is part of the sirens. When the man saw what she was trying to do, he backed away back onto the boat. Then the other mermaids started attacking. That is from both creatures but at the same time is not from both creatures because they both attack men in the water. They don't jump out and try to push them in. But with all that even if it relates more to sirens, the creators had to new them mermaids because sirens are three creatures and that pod had like 30-40 "mermaids" in them. this is still one of the best scenes of mythological creatures on the big screen, it's so ominous the silence, in a small dingy rowboat with beautiful and terrifying predators luring starting to surround them.
People arguing if they’re sirens or mermaids lol. They could be either... both sirens and mermaids killed sailors in their myths. and yes sirens were originally depicted by the Greeks as birds with women’s heads but they evolved throughout time to be more like mermaids. In one Greek myth the sirens were challenged by the muses to a singing contest. When the muses won they plucked the sirens feathers and they fell from the sky into the ocean, which is another reason why they later were depicted more like mermaids. Mermaids on the other hand were usually more caring and would save sailors, but they’re also often depicted as raging as the sea, being quick to anger and would drown sailors.
I'll never get tired of watching this scene from the moment the lead mermaid appears to when the others surface as the pirates are falling under the spell of her song. It's eerie and beautiful at the same time.
The beautiful mermaids mixed with the lighting mixed with the soundtrack makes me feel like I’ve been thrown straight into a myth! Rob Marshall and Hans Zimmerman know their stuff!
Sailors: "Mermaids!" Capt. Jack: "Should we tell them they're actually Sirens, mate?" Mr. Gibbs: "...don't see much point in that." Capt. Jack: "...right."
All alone on the sea, in a darkest night, surrounded by endless water, with a little lamp light, half sleep, half awake, hear nothing but dolphin voice from far far away... A stunning pretty mermaid appears, she sits alone, beside the boat, looking at me... I would let her to take me to anywhere, even to the bottom of the sea.
@@lunaalsephina No, let's end this debate once and for all. Siren's are half bird half woman, mermaids are half fish half woman. So this is a mermaid, end of the matter. You can look it up if you don't believe me.
One of the best scenes in the franchise hands down in my opinion, especially the whole mermaid battle. It was so badass and truly captures the dangerous ravenous nature of these mermaids as well as their alluring tendencies. It's almost as if I was there myself and felt the emotions of the crew as they were frozen in place due to curiosity as well as mesmerized by the mermaids(sirens in all honesty) beauty all while being lured to their deaths by their alluring voices. It's almost like they were hypnotized and before they knew it they were screwed. Then there was that feeling of dred and unavoidable doom as we watched dozens surrounded the little rowboat and before you know it the lovely singing ended and was replaced by fangs and screeches. It was just brilliant and ughhh I loved it. I felt the enthrall, excitement, the realization, and the fear. Just as the actors portrayed to feel as well before getting attacked and man it was scary but dope asf
Matthiasmj -_- Yup. They are living a happy ending. (*SPOILER ALERT*) When Syrena kissed Phillip, he's now able to breath under water without drowning.
Anyone ever thought how on earth does almost every culture have some knowledge about mermaids and yet they are said to be mythical creatures? I'm from South Africa by the way from the Xhosa tribe and we refer to them as Mam'lambo which directly translates to mother of the river.
same thing applies to werewolves in Greek and native American culture 2 cultures separated by a massive ocean and both didn’t even try to fair the open sea yet they both tell tales of giant wolf men
It’s honestly for the better that if these mythical creatures were to be found no one should know they exist imagine the panic and not to mention people who would try to hunt them for trophies if they existed
@@francmarcus8433 Have you ever considers the fact that….. people talk ? Even back then. People would travel and tell each other stories. Also, humans aren’t as unique as we think. Someone in France can come up with the same idea of a creature and 5 years later someone in American has that same idea. It’s not complicated to look at an animal and imagine what would happen if you crossed it with a human. People back then were dumb and uneducated, so when they couldn’t explain something (like a large sea creature passing by) they would use their imagination and make something up.
I feel like they really should've had more mermaids like in the pirates of the Caribbean movies. And I love the job they have done on the mermaids in this film, its enchanting and so seducing like I love it, if they ever make a other movie in the potc franchise then I hope for more mermaids
Sounds weird but, i like chicks with deep voices. Never liked the typical girl with a squeaky chipmunk voice. Girls with a low pitch tone and a feminine style, are my true weakness.
That's a surprisingly effective scene for such a mediocre movie. You really got a suspensful, creepy feeling, with the sirens surrounding the boat, both threatening and charming at the same time, and the crew being afraid to strike the first blow, the singing echoing in the water, showcasing how agile in the sea those things are compared to humans. And it doesn't even end with a jumpscare. Poor Al Capone found himself in a very good horror moment.
I wish she did more movies, she could have been successful and well-known ( even though she is still popular in the fashion industry when she's been retired )
A scene that will stay with me forever.... In this movie one of the crew is the young boy in the boat. I can't help but think how much he has learnt in this adventure and what interesting stories he will have in the future. Much like the young Jack Sparrow and the legen he has become.
The way they relaxingly arise to the surface looking like some kind of school of sharks or wolf pack in the night with no expressions on their faces is utterly horrifying. This is why I do not go out in the ocean. I stay my ass at the beach
I mean mermen exist and they would most likely do the same thing to you or since mermaids often sing of comfort or what you truly want they could sing a song about hot mermen just underneath the water and you’d fall for it due to their amazing powers of convincing others
The worst camp camp memes ever although they probably wouldn’t be able to lure people in that well. Most sailors were men because it thought to be bad luck to have women on board
Fun fact stated by the creators: The mermaid shots took a month( day and nights) to film. If you're more curious, go watch: How to bring a mermaid to life ( WIRED)
The mermaid portrayers were chosen for having "exotic sense, an otherworldly sensibility, but also under those layers a deadly quality", according to Director Rob Marshall, and had to take swimming lessons to learn movements such as the dolphin and eggbeater kicks.
I know the blonde mermaid is singing the lyrics, but I noticed some other mermaids with their mouths open. Are they creating that beautiful sound in the background?
Couldn't some mermaids be categorized as sirens? Depending on the myths and shit, they seem to overlap a lot, at least in terms of the 'singing to your doom.' My understanding was that sirens were bird-women.
jack No sirens are half women-half birds and mermaids are half women-half fish...they hate each others and I read that two sirens could hold a mermaid and eat her

When she started singing and the camera focused on Scrum, the old man was looking around because he _knew_ there were more of them
I love how they said "BOI"
boys
*Bold
not mermaids
they're singing "jolly sailor bold" but the last word is very hard to distinguish
Mah boah
I'll never get tired of watching this scene from the moment the lead mermaid appears to when the others surface as the pirates are falling under the spell of her song. It's eerie and beautiful at the same time.
The beautiful mermaids mixed with the lighting mixed with the soundtrack makes me feel like I’ve been thrown straight into a myth! Rob Marshall and Hans Zimmerman know their stuff!
Sailors: "Mermaids!"
Capt. Jack: "Should we tell them they're actually Sirens, mate?"
Mr. Gibbs: "...don't see much point in that."
Capt. Jack: "...right."
Idiot
0:33 -- "Can you talk?" MERMAID WRITES NOTE: "No, Ursula took my voice away."
All alone on the sea, in a darkest night, surrounded by endless water,
with a little lamp light,
half sleep, half awake, hear nothing but dolphin voice from far far away...
A stunning pretty mermaid appears, she sits alone, beside the boat, looking at me...
I would let her to take me to anywhere, even to the bottom of the sea.
Lei Pei this is so pretty
Beautiful 😊
Sounds like a sailor song
Can't lie, I might risk my life to get a kiss from a mermaid as beautiful as that.
That ain't a mermaid that's a siren
@@lunaalsephina No, let's end this debate once and for all. Siren's are half bird half woman, mermaids are half fish half woman. So this is a mermaid, end of the matter. You can look it up if you don't believe me.
@@serrobertstrong1377
Yeah this are mermiads, but sirens aren't half bird half woman that would be harpies.
you all should learn about greek mythology
ADORE the mermaids in this film.
Same
gave me goosebumps
Gave me boner
I remember in cinema everyone gasped when we saw the first mermaid she’s so pretty
I feel like I'm in the minority, but this was my favorite PotC film. This is one of the many reasons why.
Same actually.
Saaaaaammmeeee
Why my every crush turns out to be deadly?
I KNOW I KNOW IN ISLAM EVERYTHING IS DEADLY
Stop dateing mermaids like damn
Because u like BDSM.
well, that escalated quickly
Maybe you should stop falling in love with mountain lions?
Bitch went from 0 to 100 real quick.
I knew something with fishy when she started singing that jolly sailor boat song lol
Claire Romain 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Claire Romain they always do
Jolly Sailor Bold*
Better CGI than the new Little Mermaid movie lmao.
My favorite scene in the entire franchise, the mystery, the hidden depth. Whoever is doing the singing is absolutely mesmerizing.
I dont care if she kills me ... TAKE ME
Jam 6 simp
God help you my friend.
take you than what?
Jam 6 lmao I agree man
@@pp3k3jamail
Lmao, what hurt your fragile ego?
Now that's mu favorite scene. I mostly liked are the mermaids. Deadly but extremly beautiful. Someday, I wish I could be a mermaid like them.
Hans Zandt Oh no. lol I'm just like Syrena. You know, who she didn't eat Philip and other pirates like Jack Sparrow.
Well don't except Phillip and her to live happily ever after..
Matthiasmj -_- Yup. They are living a happy ending. (*SPOILER ALERT*) When Syrena kissed Phillip, he's now able to breath under water without drowning.
***** ... Or a mermaid on the ship's bathtub
***** Oh I just know him for years from the days as a little child.
Same thing for the Great Flood, giants, sea serpents/dragons... I believe all these things literally existed at some point in ancient times.
The mermaid scenes were inappropriate which is why they should never be in another pirates film and why I hate on Stranger Tides.
@@masonpyle5929 How is it inappropriate?
Fear, Lust, and Greed, all crammed into one song..
I am a man, and I have one question. Why is her voice deeper than mine?
because she is doing her best
Because she came from the deep of the ocean Mr. Brave and Bold
+Alexander TJR you he is not manly that mean that she is masculin to ; wtf are you saying dont talk easly without thinking men are just men
Sounds weird but, i like chicks with deep voices. Never liked the typical girl with a squeaky chipmunk voice. Girls with a low pitch tone and a feminine style, are my true weakness.
Adrian De Gaula d
That's a surprisingly effective scene for such a mediocre movie. You really got a suspensful, creepy feeling, with the sirens surrounding the boat, both threatening and charming at the same time, and the crew being afraid to strike the first blow, the singing echoing in the water, showcasing how agile in the sea those things are compared to humans. And it doesn't even end with a jumpscare. Poor Al Capone found himself in a very good horror moment.
Mediocre? It's amazing
On Stranger Tides wasn't all that great, but at the very least they absolutely nailed this mermaid sequence. Probably the best scene in the movie.
Gemma Ward, you are a legend.
They casted Gemma Ward so perfectly for that mermaid role. She's the epitome of otherworldly beauty in the modeling industry during her career.
She has a beautiful voice. Wow!
i want to be a mermaid and lure men to their death
Kat Beckman
It's called marriage.
Women do it all the time.
Pro0ohunter I'm shleep
You probably have a "mermaid spirit"
Pro0ohunter So men don't propose to the women this time?
Girl you can do that now.
Guess that rules out the possibility of a second kiss. Lol!
LOL.
The way they relaxingly arise to the surface looking like some kind of school of sharks or wolf pack in the night with no expressions on their faces is utterly horrifying. This is why I do not go out in the ocean. I stay my ass at the beach
I love the echo they give this song, it's a great scene all around :3
Gemma Ward.....
i like it
Icon
0:36 when she says YES...
Ladies and gentlemen, the reason I’m gay
I mean mermen exist and they would most likely do the same thing to you or since mermaids often sing of comfort or what you truly want they could sing a song about hot mermen just underneath the water and you’d fall for it due to their amazing powers of convincing others
The worst camp camp memes ever although they probably wouldn’t be able to lure people in that well. Most sailors were men because it thought to be bad luck to have women on board
These mermaids can make gays into straight 👍
I'd like to clarify im panromantic. I like everyone
I loved it this escene when I saw for first time, its magical. Gemma Ward did a great job, and the animation of mermaids is wonderful
i love this song so much ...
my friend was talking about sirens and this was the only song I thought of XD
Jasmine Moore i like this song too
What the song name??
@@user-cd9uk5wo4b My jolly sailor bold...
WHY DO I LOVE THIS SCENE SO MUCH
spicy jellybean because it shows the power women can have over men.
I come here to ease my mind after watching the new Disney adaptation of Ariel in The little mermaid
I wish i saw this in the theaters, the sound and chilling atmosphere and action.
Is it just me or is that Amanda Seyfried?
No it's not her
No but the actress does look like her
Fun fact stated by the creators: The mermaid shots took a month( day and nights) to film. If you're more curious, go watch:
How to bring a mermaid to life ( WIRED)
1:55 is absolutely where I would've jumped in the water.
The mermaid portrayers were chosen for having "exotic sense, an otherworldly sensibility, but also under those layers a deadly quality", according to Director Rob Marshall, and had to take swimming lessons to learn movements such as the dolphin and eggbeater kicks.
OMG!
But I love mermaids!
Even I being a female was just mesmerized by the beautiful sirens
One of my favorite scenes in the franchise, especially when it's so peaceful... until it isn't
*This scene is a powerful combination of beauty, creepiness, suspense, enticing, mysticism and terror.*
I know the blonde mermaid is singing the lyrics, but I noticed some other mermaids with their mouths open. Are they creating that beautiful sound in the background?
This actress is perfectly fit in the role of mermaid.
I've watched this scene so many times it's just unbelievable for me at this point
Name of the movie pl
2:14 the boat looks like a crab
those aren't mermaids, they're sirens
Couldn't some mermaids be categorized as sirens? Depending on the myths and shit, they seem to overlap a lot, at least in terms of the 'singing to your doom.' My understanding was that sirens were bird-women.
Joey Matheny Harpy's are bird women. they sing you to sleep and eat you
sirens have been depicted as both, nowadays though, they're usually shown as beautiful fish women
jack No sirens are half women-half birds and mermaids are half women-half fish...they hate each others and I read that two sirens could hold a mermaid and eat her
Joey Matheny It's just that u can't even trust google anymore....Sirens Mermaids and Harpies have been forgotten 😂😂😂
Hans zimmer’s mermaid score in this movie is godly chilling!
Pirate: imma lure them with my singing
Mermaid: *UNO REVERSE CARD*
i know i’m late to the party but i just started watching all of the pirates of the caribbean movies for the first time recently, and so far this 4th one is my favorite. i love this scene and the song so much, i could watch it over and over for the rest of my life lol
