Thanks for a good simple video on how to check and adjust ventiles. It will help me do my first check on my R1100S

Which side is at TDC? Which side do you do first? How to tell? Just did my adjustment this weekend. Thanks for the guide.
Tip- remove cover and advance crank with nut on front alternator pulley. "bumping" (two hands and pulling, hard) rear wheel becomes a two man job. OT mark goes past too fast to see, as well.

Awesome video. Nice to see how the German bikes are done. If your camera has Manual Focus I'd try using it to lock in your area to be in focus to eliminate the Focus hunting when your shoulder enters the FOV ..
    thanks for sharing.

Thanks, nice and easy. had a couple questions, finding tdc, which side, and should the other side be 'rocking', 1 valve closed? I had this after I changed the heads, but coming up to reset, can't find no rock... Think it's okay, I got OT tdc, and can reset valves, so should be good, can't see any other way. And how tight, my bro had them tight so to force the feeler gauges in, I loosened them off, and this time I'm going by your visual, barely tight enough the gauges barely sit in there, but next size up won't fit. Things they assume, us amateurs have to work out. Also, I have the new HG's, the metal ones and I'm not gunner retorque them, have read different theories on this. Otherwise fine, cheers.

I think your video is quite helpfull. At least it encouraged me to do my valve adjustment by myself.

I am the proud owner of a 1997 BMW R850R. I was looking at my bike today and saw a second port on the intake side of the head, what is that for?

I did notice the orange tape was on the intake and blue on the exhaust valves. Should it not be the other way around Blue for cold as in intake and exhaust red as in hot exhaust?

In all these video's I have seen the size of hex wrench is never mentioned to un due the hex nuts, everyone figures you know but that is not the case always and would sure help so you could just buy a single hex socket, I was asked this and I don't know. My hex socket set was stolen, others want anything Snap-on. Good vid.

    Hi!,
I really appreciate you taking the time and explaining the procedure(s) in order to fix our on bikes.
1-when the alternator cover is off, how much do you "crank the engine over" using the bolt, util you see the "TDC" through the gauge?
2-is rotating the rear wheel ocomplish the same as turning the bolt?
3- 0.3 for the exhaust and 0.15 for the intake?
4-when putting the valve cover on, does the gasket go on directly w/out any adhesive?
    Thanks

+Phill B Hi Phill, I'm glad to hear these are helping you out.
1- There is no set amount to crank the engine over because that all depends on what position it is in when you start. If you pass it up, keep going until it comes back around. Remember you will have a TDC for each side of the engine. If you are not sure, get to the mark and check your valves by tugging on them a little. If they are all tight, you're on the wrong side of the engine.
2- Yes, putting the bike in a high gear and having someone bump the back wheel around will give you the exact same results, only you need 2 people and you won't be able to go as slowly when you are coming up on TCD.
3- yes, when the engine is COLD - I recommend getting a set of color coded feeler gauges from Beemer Boneyard, makes it a lot easier.
4- correct, there is no adhesive required. Just take your time to ensure everything stays lined up.

Your videos have been very helpful. Thanks But can you tell me if you can change the push rods without messing up the timing ? Thanks again

Torq. Torq. Torq. Did you forget to use the torq wrench on those valves? I might be wrong (cannot find my Climer book darn it!) but I am pretty sure these have to be set at a specific torq

Great video. Does the negative on the battery have to be disconnected as it does on an airhead when adjusting the valves on an oilhead? Thanks.

That really depends on how "out of wack" they were in the first place.

Better lighting is a must. And a visual of what you are doing; if you're going to go through all the trouble of making a You Tube video.

Why not switching into 6th gear and just spinning the rear wheel to get to the top?.. Why take off the alternator cover at all?

    • @TheMotofrog
      @TheMotofrog  7 лет назад +1

Well for one thing it's a 5 speed! :-) But honestly the benefit is not having to go back and forth bumping the rear wheel and then checking the view port. By going in through the front you can be turning the engine while viewing at the same time. Now I did another video where I modified the alt cover so that you don't have to take it off, you just pop off a plug and you're set to go. You can see it here. ruclips.net/video/b5N4ulZzVa0/видео.html

Not 100% clear on what you are doing for the novice.
