"Contra-" means "against" or "opposite" or "opposing" or "contrasting" and in contra dancing it's helpful to think of this as meaning "opposite with" your partner rather than "opposite to" because contra dancing is a completely cooperative activity - for the benefit of one and all involved - and the more experienced dancers help the beginners. If you are ever in the area, stop by the Concord Scout House any Monday or Thursday evening and you're likely to see some people you recognize! It's never too late to get back into it so try Google to find some local dances.
