    • @mrownagelol
      @mrownagelol 8 лет назад +154

      Totally agree, never heard anything live that sounds so perfectly mixed, no instrument is too overpowering whatsoever, however, can distinguish and feel every instrument together

    • @SJA962

      LOL. It´s Steven Wilson himself
      "The film is directed and edited by Lasse Hoile and the audio track is mixed in stereo and 5.1 Surround by Steven Wilson"
      All raises to Steven, as always

    • @TheEpicBrionac
      @TheEpicBrionac 8 лет назад +43

      I understand that the track is mixed by him. But was the venue itself really mixed by him?

    • @imbra
      @imbra 8 лет назад +118

      Yeah... I went to a PT concert after the Incident tour in Budapest. As great as that was, I look back to it with a kind of bittersweet feeling. No concert I have been to before or since got even close to sounding that good. I could hear John Wesley's backing vocals clearer than the lead vocals on most of the other concerts I've been to. I just couldn't believe it. I though there's some pre-recorded trickery involved until they had an on-stage trainwreck on Lazarus when Steven missed the first verse, stopped the band and they started again.
      After the concert I wanted to hug the sound guy...

    • @XiyuYang
      @XiyuYang 8 лет назад +44

      He mixed and produced the audio tracks on the dvd, but surely it's not him who is behind the mixing console at the venue.

      I think maybe the thing I do like in the studio version more is the guitar solo. I mean, it’s Alex Lifeson, what do ya expect? That said, I do like how John Wesley starts off the solo similarly but goes to his own original solo. It’s respectable that he didn’t just copy Lifeson’s solo note for note and made this entirely his own.

    Over 35 years I’ve played the drums. Gavin is simply off-the-scale incredible. Yes there are a very small handful of drummers who may lay claim to being perhaps more technical but most of those impress my head but leave my soul relatively cold. Gavin takes the prize for me for his blend of finesse, precision, technicality and above all the soul-grabbing musicality of his artistry.

      Welcome to the club gentlemen. Porcupine Tree is the Pink Floyd of the last 25 years Imo. The best progressive rock band of the last at least 30 years.
      I'm 60, and was searching for new prog to explore back in the late 90s with the help of this new thing called the internet. Some suggestions were made on some early prog forum to check out PT and I was immediately blown away. The first album I checked out was the double live album Coma Divine and I instantly fell in love. Pristine sound, progressive, edgy, spacey, hard rockin, melodic all at once. Their footprint in the US at that time (98) was still minimal, only a few US concerts by then. I immediately bought Stupid Dream and then their "new album" Lightbulb Sun and I couldn't believe there was a band out there playing this good and sounding both new and retro/familiar at the same time.
      Then I found out about a progressive rock festival called NEARfest and found out they were booking Porc Tree as one of the headline bands at the 2001 3 day Prog festival and I was there. So I see PT play for the first time there and I was blown away. Been a fan ever since, snapped up everything PT and Wilson has done, and saw PT live on their In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear of a Blank Planet (3x), and Incident tours before Wilson pulled the plug and went "solo". Most of these at small intimate clubs, so up close, and always with great sound. I love what Wilson is doing post PT, but I miss the band dynamic PT had, especially after the great Gavin Harrison joined.
      I highly recommend you get all the live DVDs/blu rays. Arriving Somewhere Not Here is fantastic, but this show documented on the Anesthetize blu ray is their best, as you can see from this great tune. The 2001 NEARfest show is on YTube here complete btw, which I recently discovered and is well worth checking out.

    I think this is one of the finest DVD/Bluray concert releases ever filmed. It's rare to see live footage filmed in a way that not only does the show justice, but in many respects actually adds to the experience. I think this film deserves to be 'up there' with Talking Head's 'Stop Making Sense' and Pink Floyd's 'Live at Pompeii'.

    Not only is this my favourite PT song but this is one of my all time favourite songs period. I have heard plenty of awesome epics ranging from Close to the Edge, Cygnus X1, Supper's Ready to Octavarium, The Count of Tuscany and Hessian Peel..and they are just a few examples as there are more awesome epics i haven't mentioned but Anesthetize tops them all IMO. The musicianship is just brilliant and every member gets to shine in this song. The haunting and beautiful vocals of Steven Wilson, the eargasm drumming of Gavin Harrison, the atmosphere of Richard Barbieri, the groove of Colin Edwin and the awesome backings vocals of John Wesley..oh let's not forget the killer guitar riffs. Everything great about prog rock/prog metal can be summarized best in this one song. The amount of transitions this song goes through is just outstanding. One minute you're hearing a Genesis-like opening with beautiful synths and amazing vocal harmonies and then the next minute you're hearing something straight out of an Opeth song and then to top it all of it ends with a Rush/Yes-like climax. Speaking of Rush, i think it's awesome that they got Alex Lifeson to play the opening solo on the album version. Im a bit bummed out that John Wesley did the opening solo instead of Lifeson in this version but it's still good nonetheless. And the sound design is top notch just sayin. Need i say more..this song is just an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. Sorry if this comment went on for too long. I just really adore this song :)

    I listen to all kinds of music, but where it comes to listening to a band and knowing that every member of a band and every instrument having their own very specific role that they are so aware of, and couldn't be replaced by any other - I always come back to listening to this. I don't really get that feeling when listening to other prog/metal bands except a handful.
    It's quite obvious that for Steven Wilson that the background is a foundation that the rest is placed on, and that the background in the music is always integral to the progression of the songs, and the rest of the band kind of adds details to the background, whereas with other bands they often seem to add things to "sound more like" their "signature" sound, and add them either much more vaguely - such as to not make a mess, or very harshly, so it gives a "statement-y" sound, so they can get away with it.
    What's also enjoyable about PT is that you can tell they are having so much fun on stage. Not the "I'm so good at this" kind of fun, (I might be looking at you DT) not the "I'm playing this really hard part now" (I'm really looking at you this time), but more of the "This sounds great" kind of fun that you get when you happen to come across something amazing with your band and just jam the hell out of it.
    I guess it's just respectable music.

    And I followed the short life
    As they broke on the shore line
    I could see you, but I couldn't hear you
    You were holding your hat in the breeze
    Turning away from me
    In this moment you were stolen...

      I saw them only once in support of Fear of a Blank Planet, at the House of Blues in Dallas. I would really love to see them again. Those two hours were magical.
      Come on, Steven. Make it happen. Please.

    Gavin has got to be one of the most MUSICAL drummers I have seen in a while. He does not just play drums...he makes those bad boys sing. Accurate....finessed....articulate....fluid.....just damn 'music' to the ears.

    • @retepyam5858
      @retepyam5858 5 лет назад +1

      Totally agree Fluid, rhythmic, dynamic, nuanced, ghost notes, incredible fills, best drumming I have ever heard giving full range to what drums can do given the right artist sitting behind them.

    I was told about this band a couple of years ago. Listened to a song and was like...eh it’s ok. Then in the garage restoring a dirt bike this summer I just put this on as “ you might also like this” recommendation on iTunes. Well, as I listened to this it grabbed me, I listened again and now I am discovering more and more awesome songs by this band. I can’t believe in my 54 years of life that I missed this band somehow. However, I don’t have to wait for new music from them as it’s all out there for me to find now. These guys made some badass music.

    Must have watched this a thousand times or more and still keep coming back. They were just so on their game that night and Gavin showed just exactly what a drum kit is capable of with a mix of subtle nuance and driving rhythm totally superb.

      in an interview that's on youtube can't remember the exact video thought the guy doing the inteview asks if they'll get back together to which he responds that almost every band has split and come back and that PT will probably be no exception =)

      Pretty sure Wilson doesn't want people associating a specific album to the band. Each PT album is more of a project than a band album per se, PT in itself is more of concept band like Ayreon than a standard one. An evolving entity it you want. Listen to their whole catalog in becomes self-explanatory
