  • In the previous episodes, we founded two cities in two regions, claimed half of the map, established massive surpluses of food and supplies, and banked thousands of gold in our Treasury. Today, we put all of that building, saving, and planning to the test and claim ALL of Hildebolt's land at once. Will we prevail in our goals of conquering the entire work? We'll see! Enjoy!

    The way I've been explaining the army to people is that your militia units are just regular town folk with other jobs to do. When you call them to battle, they have to leave their jobs, go home, grab their gear, then meet up at the rally point. They are craftsmen, tradesmen, laborers, etc. not a professional army, and their battlefield prowess is duly lacking because of it. Your retinue, on the other hand, IS a professional army. They do nothing other than practice fighting, they have no other jobs, they are paid to be battle ready at all times, thus out on the battlefield, their equipment is generally better, but more importantly, their capabilities are far superior. They "could" be considered elite, but in reality they are not, they are just professional soldiers. (Veterancy and elite status, I assume, is what the whole not yet implemented experience system will be for.) They are your main force in your army and should be used to replace your militia at every opportunity. The militia is your supporting force. Of course, this being a game, the cheese strategy is to build up your militia first, then your retinue, thus doubling the size or your army against what was the developer's intent...
    The real proper way to do battle is to park your retinue front and center to take the bulk of the initial charge since they are your real army and can withstand the brutality of the opening strikes in battle, they last longer in a fight, they are better equipped for the fight, and they won't break as easily so you want them engaged as long as possible. You don't have a lord or general on the battlefield to protect so you don't need to hold your most elite troops as a guard force, which is historically why the elite troops weren't ever committed to the front lines until late in a battle when it was clear someone was winning, or a desperate last chance to not lose. That doesn't exist in this game, so commit them to be the tip of your spear as it were.
    Flanking them would be any militia with a shield. All of these units should be tightly grouped along with your retinue forming a shield wall to protect themselves from arrows, (and historically) chariots, horses, elephants, or even just a blood crazed charge by their enemy even though those aren't in the game (yet, maybe?).
    Behind the initial lines would be your spear militia spread out. The idea being your initial melee troops occupy the enemy's attention and your spearmen stab with attacks of opportunity since they have a reaching weapon and lack a shield for self protection. You don't want them getting hacked down where they stand because they can't defend themselves. They protect your main force's back, preventing them from being outflanked. If your front line melee are losing, before they break, you can withdraw them through your spear militia who will act as a screen preventing the enemy, who should already be worn down from the fight, from giving chase. Re-establish your melee unit behind the spearmen, and once they've regrouped, you can withdraw your spearmen behind your front line forces. A feigned withdrawal like this keeps all of your troops in the battle longer, while wearing down the enemy, allowing you, if you were the weaker force, to actually win since the enemy is always running up against fresher troops.
    Lastly are your archers, and they do a lot of different things depending on what stage of battle is happening. Prior to combat, they actually should be lined up in front of all of your troops. Let them shoot volleys into the advancing enemy to wound and slow them with the archers set to give ground. If you have your archers staggard along the route your enemy is advancing, you can take advantage of the same feigned withdrawal talked about before to harass and slow the enemy's advance, while you keep retreating out of danger. Once the enemy gets close enough, your archers should start moving back as quickly as possible to get out of the way, and depending on your melee formations you can either have them retreat through your melee units if there's room to do so or split off to the sides and circle around behind your melee units and draw the enemy straight into the bulk of your main force. Your archers become useless for a bit once this happens since they shouldn't be firing into their own people. Once your main force is engaged and the archers are no longer being chased, the archers can take flanking positions on either side (and set them to freely fire, but not friendly fire) so they can pick off any stragglers not piled into the active scrum or actively shoot back at the enemy archers until the enemy formations break.

    • @Skaldzerker
      @Skaldzerker 26 дней назад

      Game systems as they are, would you consider the spear militia's damage reflection to be an argument for them to be in front when the enemy charges? I haven't seen any numbers for what they reflect beyond the "10" listed in game, whatever that means. Not sure if it's a percent or an absolute number. If it's decent, I'd put them out front, halt the enemy's charge, then immediately charge the retinue into the melee. Depending on the enemy force, I'd pull the spears back to rest and be ready to reinforce a failing line or apply force to a developing advantage.

  • @Qantravon
    @Qantravon 29 дней назад +183

    I think you're spreading your formations out far too widely, and that's why the enemy is able to get to your archers. You've stationed the formations miles apart, you want to station the archers just a little behind your primary force, that way if the enemy tries to sneak around and flank to get the archers, your melee units are right there and can quickly reposition to block them.

    • @iain.sm.c
      @iain.sm.c 29 дней назад +21

      I was thinking that too. Most of my knowledge on rts games like this one comes from all of Many A True Nerd's Total War series haha. Infantry in the front grouped together, archers placed closely behind, and spearmen guarding the flanks.
      I don't envy Phil learning a a completely new type of game in front of hundreds of thousands of people, but I'd say he's still doing a great job!

    • @NightKnight347
      @NightKnight347 28 дней назад +3

      Archers should be skirmishing in front until the battle picks up, at which point they retreat behind the melee units and either engage enemy skirmishers over top of the melee, or use their mobility to flank the enemy and deal damage from a new direction.

      @@jaredmccain7555 It's just the right thing to do for the sake of small unit tactics. Given that units seem to take a massive morale hit when flanked, I would guess so. I do not know how the dev coded the game, though. I have seen people confirm that friendly fire is a thing though, and that in itself would be good reason to not fire from behind your own units.

    If you right click an enemy army, then your army will directly attack that army. I noticed that you only dragged with your mouse making the army change formation. This will not make them attack, they will instead stand in their formation until an enemy army attacks them.
    One more tip. All your armies will get higher effectiveness if you keep them close together, what you did is you made everyone stand in a row. The best formation is almost a perfect square.

    Helpful tip that I discovered by accident going from New Cycle to Manor Lords and trying to hit 1 to change the game speed: hold control in the army panel to select multiple units then hold control and press 1, 2, 3… to set a control group.
    Then you can use that hot key to make one big spear shield line set to hold your ground so you get the stationary impale bonus, can have your archer group start in front to get more volleys off then pull them back (though their melee is stronger than their arrows due to over nerf lol)
    Can have your pole arms anti armor and retinue in a group to flank while using your shield guys to set the anvil line
    Or whatever tactics you want to use.
    Hope this helps, love your channel

    In peaceful mode you quickly run out of resources when your population grows, so creating a sprawling empire, that’s functional, isn’t an option either. I do love the game and I’m anxious to see where it goes from here

    I would absolutely love a more build focused play-through of this. It is such a cool game it deserves that attention in my opinion.

    Sir Phillip, Lord of the Land: "Good news villager, you've been recruited into our army for a glorious battle!"
    Peasant: "Oh ok, well it can't be _too_ bad. We are a rather mighty barony."
    Sir Phillip: "Excellent, your position will be archer. Get your equipment ready."
    Peasant: 💀💀💀

    Personally, would like to see more. I don’t play on the PC, so I can’t participate, but I’ve seen a lot of videos detailing tips and tricks. There’s a lot here and I would definitely watch more. I wish I knew how to make a game, I’d love to offer this guy some help and support the game more

    There is a place roads button in the castle planner that lets you place roads inside your Manor, but yes other features are unavailable. I think town walls are planned for later in development.

    I know you are going with the newest greatest game but "Farthest Frontier" is a by far more polished game than this as of now Phil. As much as I would love to see a "Baldurs's Gate 3" campaign from you, I know you got kids, try it out while waiting on CS2 to get there stuff together or for Manor Lords to become better. I have no doubt that Manor Lords is gonna be awesome but it has no depth right now. "Farthest Frontier" or "Frostpunk 2" will scratch your itch man. Tho I do have to say seeing you go from pacifist to warlord has been.... a thing :P

    You can make your units go after enemies by just clicking on them. Thus, you won't have to manually chase them like you did with the retinue against the archers

    RTS ain't exactly my kind of game, I love the building and management part but the combat usually is what bothers me, although this one seems to be completely PvE, what I'm definitely okay with BUT then we have the realism part that actually pushes me away a little cuz I suck with those sort of thing (heck, I barely can play SimCity without getting mad at some mechanics). The game itself seems awesome tho and I'd buy it if it wasn't MADLY expensive in my country (yup, I checked and the game alone is 100 bucks but the whole bundle is nearly 450... way out of my league, specially for something I'd take a while to actually start playing) just to support the dev even tho he isn't completely independent iirc * shrugs *
    Aaaanyway, you definitely got a new sub and I'm definitely binge watching your videos this weekend xD

    Great fun, and I think I saw something in the game that allows you to assign a number to a group. Typically this would be by selecting the group and then hit control and a number.

    I think my biggest critique for the way you manage your army is to make the retinue your front line troops, not your flank/reserve. They're your absolute best soldiers, they're your only professionals who are well equipped with good weapons and armor, why not put them where the action is heaviest?
