Only interceptors moved away from guns (yes that includes the F4 as it was originally ordered as an interceptor) and that was totally sensible as their purpose was to shoot down bombers which fly high and are un-manoeuvrable making missiles consistently effective against them. All aircraft designed as fighters kept guns. Also in Vietnam the navy F4s (which didn't have a gun) had a higher k/d and number of kills than the army F4s (which got one later on). Which is arguably attributable to the fact that the F4s had to have their radar downgraded to a smaller and less capable set in order to fit a gun. Also out of the army's 106 kills with F4s in Vietnam only 6 were with the gun
