Not sure if I heard it, but chemical foot warmers and some thick neoprene full shoe covers work wonders for keeping your feet super nice and toasty even in sub 0 (C) temps.
One thing I always do at the start of winter is install a couple of layers of kitchen foil underneath my insoles. Once it’s there you can’t tell, but it make a difference to losing heat through the bottom of the shoe by reflecting your heat back in, and also helping to block off any vents in the soles or bolt holes for cleats etc. Another thing I do if it’s really cold (sub zero c) is wear leg warmers underneath bib tights. Can really help to cut out the windchill
I have this fleece-lined hat with ear flaps and a short brim that can be flipped up or down. Although it's not cycling specific, it works perfectly under a helmet.
Love this! As a northern USA cyclist (Wisconsin!) a good headband or hat with ear flaps is also a must in the winter. Giant insulated gloves or pogies are also a must when it gets around freezing or below for me. Temp is currently -9 C outside, -16 C with windchill. Time for some fat biking in the snow!
Like I said on your other forum, for my Raynaud's Syndrome I have 12 Volt glove liners and expensive ski gloves. Battery isn't that big, about 3/4 inch thick and 4 inch X 6 inch wide. It doesn't weigh too much. I put it in the rear pocket of my jacket and don't notice it's there. Home made wire harness goes down each sleeve.
From hiking in really freezing temperatures above the Arctic circle, I like the fishnet type baselayer. You have them in merino. Looks weird. But is an extra base layer. Keeps your skin really dry when working hard and avoid being cold when chilling.
Just a few tips from the middle of the USA were a sunny winter day can be closer to -25 C. or lowetr. If your feet are getting cold, cover your head. Use a helmet cover and wear a head cover like a toque/stocking cap to keep the wind out of your ears and to hold in the heat that your brain needs to function. Wear an over mitten over you gloves. That way if you start to over heat take off the mittens. Remember the fingers are your radiator that removes access heat from the core. A hat with a bill is helpful in keeepning the low angle of the sun out of the eyes. Something is worng if your base layer is damp when riding. Try wearing a short sleeve or sleevless fishnet base layer from Brynje of Norway and use the merino as your mid layer. Your riding jacket may aero dynamic but does not allow body vapor a place to exit out the bottom of the jacket. that is another reason why your base layer is damp. For cold feet try wearing wool knicker socks to keep the blood warm on the way to the feet. Several days ago I was out riding at 0C 32F with helment cover, fleece cap, buff, fishnet base layer, merino mid layer, wind jacket, Knickers, with ankle high alpaca socks and a wind that had the flags straight out I over heated on a mile long up hill to my house. My feet never got cold. There is an old saying : If your feet are cold put on a hat.
Glad you included the overshoes, I always wear them when it's cold to reduce the wind chill. I've tried riding while wearing a 'tube' around my neck, but personally found it uncomfortable after I warmed up. Something I always wear is a cycling cap under my helmet... it makes the world of difference, but each to his/her own 😉
Yes I also do this, I prefer a toe cover plus a relatively thin overshoe. You get as much warmth as most thicker overshoes but with less bulk and more flexibility around the ankle
If you are dressed correctly you will be coldish for about 5 minutes at the start of the ride. After that, no sweat. Start cold, no sweat. Also headband earwarmer...my ears get cold first.
As a 56 year old bloke, never realised I needed a sports bra. I’ll add that to my Christmas list. Mind you, it might disturb my wife 😂 Good advice though 👍
At around the 5:40 mark you cover my rule of thumb, if you are warm when you start, you're overdressed because you will heat up. I find my hands suffer the most in the cold. I was able to find gloves that have a windbreaker material and that certainly helps!
Agree with the overshoes (warm tootsies) and lenses. If I don't wear them my eyes stream and turn red, zombie look! I Like the idea of kitchen foil under insole and leg warmers under bibs. Good advice about merino liner gloves, need to get some. Keep warm.
Great stuff as always J. Allways good to hear other riders' tips on this subject. No mention of ears or head covering though. I've experimented over many bitter Lancashire Winters and never quite nailed it but Sportful headbands with a Roubaix fleece on one side are excellent under the helmet around the ears and back of the head for staving off that wind chill. Skull caps are too constricting for me but some mates swear by them for keeping their bonce insulated under their helmet. Never wear a casquette in the cold though as it serves no benefit being so thin and will actually just get wet with sweat and bring your temperature down. Never tried the DIY work gloves as liners before so gonna experiment with that. Planet X also do really cheap lobster claw gloves which are really fluffy on the inside and give great high cuff coverage to stop wind. They're excellent. Keep the vids coming!
great advice on socks, I've even tried no socks at all with boots that are a bit on the snug side and it really is warmer - you need some space in the boot/shoe, if it's tight you will FREEZE :)
Sometimes my biggest challenge is getting out the door however I don’t think I’ve ever regretted a ride afterwards. Is there a temperature that is your “I’m not riding today”? As always, great video Juliet!
What sunnies are you wearing - Oakley Sutro? Would you recommend any cycling-specific sunglasses. I'm a bit obsessed with sunnies and never leave the house without them regardless of the weather so feel I need some for on the bike
Thanks a lot Juliet, this is one of the most helpful videos ever! The other day we had -6 degrees. Despite two pairs of gloves, my fingers got colder and colder. Is there a manufacturer that offers extra warm gloves for cyclists?
I often suffer from Raynaud's so I'll try out some sort of inner gloves to keep windchill out. Sometimes my fingers hurt so bad when warming up again that I really don't want to ride any more. Really sucks.
I always wear a hat or a headband when riding in the cold, otherwise my ears really hurt. A good solution if you don't have much space in your gloves is silk ones - they are surprisingly cheap and though they are super thin, they add a significant amount of warmth. I have a question about winter tights though. I find that if I wear full longs, then at the top of my pedal stroke, they put downward pressure on my kneecap, and after a short time that causes me significant knee pain. Knicks that stop at the top of the calf seem better, but the only way I can totally avoid it is with shorts - does anyone have any suggestions to try to resolve this? My knees are quite sensitive (I have a long history of knee tracking problems), so this might just be a me problem.
My partner is watching over my shoulder....so are all you cyclists so OCD about how your clothes are stored? No we are just tidy! Merry Christmas Juliet.
You don't wear something on your head? Must have really thick hair, like my husband. I always need something over my ears when it's freezing 🙈 Layering is best for hands and feet. Kept my hands warm during this "felt like -14°C" ride. Ha! 😋
I forgot to mention, I also usually wear a headband or hat under my helmet. Anything else I should have included?
No leg warmers or a "Morning!"?
You look amazing in that sweater Juliet..
Not sure if I heard it, but chemical foot warmers and some thick neoprene full shoe covers work wonders for keeping your feet super nice and toasty even in sub 0 (C) temps.
No I think you covered things well in this proper winter cycling video
Tattoos clearly 🤔

PEoRiA 🌡 below freezing
Below Zero... It's no California coastline ⛅ 11' degrees just ThiS minute. 🌞 even 😃
Best Wishes for a speedy recovery then back in the saddle
For the feet I use sandwich bags as wind stops. Cheap and still allows moister to wik up the sock. Merino wool

I started wearing fishnet back in the early 1970' s. Great stuff. Now itis available in cotton, poly fiber and wool poly blend.
Merino wool layers are excellent, but I was surprised you don’t wear a helmet liner. My liner is merino wool and it’s great.

Toe cover and then overshoe. Makes a huge difference to toe warmth.

Yes, and completely agree, but I’ve gotten it wrong and stayed cold the entire ride.
As a 56 year old bloke, never realised I needed a sports bra. I’ll add that to my Christmas list. Mind you, it might disturb my wife 😂 Good advice though 👍
Thanks 'oh morning' one. Really helpful
I also wear a bandanna under my helmet and it seems to work here in Vancouver. Merry Christmas and a great New Year..😘😘🇨🇦🇨🇦

I like long socks and winter boots but always include the coffee stop ☕
Have a very merry Christmas and safe cycling here for From ireland,
Thank you, happy Christmas!
For us short-haired men, I’d add a thermal skullcap, preferably one with ear-flaps.

It REALLY sucks. Make sure you don’t warm them up too quickly.
When wearing thermals I find it helpful to wear a really thin thermal under a heavier weight thermal.
Tin foil in the shoes helps keep the heat in.

I wear mountain hiking socks in winter. Toasty
If your not cycling long enough to warm up.. wear more layers. I were a rain jacket for short stints.
My partner is watching over my shoulder....so are all you cyclists so OCD about how your clothes are stored? No we are just tidy! Merry Christmas Juliet.
'Less cold, also known as 'warmer' 😂
Sorry, but why the big glasses? Lots of people wearing them but what is the benefit?
the benefit is that if you like wearing them it puts a smile on your face : )
@@JulietElliottsChannel And when your smiling the whole world smiles with you. As the song goes.
Good advice but I will give the sports bra a miss.
🐎 ⛰ 🚲 Happy Trails 🐎 🌹

Lucky you!

Yeah I wear a headband or hat. Just forgot to mention it so I pinned it in the comments
