- New Video spearing Carp: • Spearing Carp
After posting a video of me spear fishing for crawdads • Spearing Crawdads I've had a good number of people asking me to make a vid on how I made my spear. So here is a vid on how I make my own spears. Step by step and a commentary on how they work. Quick, cheap, and fun. I just wish I had more critters I could go after with them. - Хобби
I bet your neighbors wear armor and carry a shield for protection when outside of their homes. LOL
This tutorial is awesome. I've been looking for a cheap but affective way to make a spear, yours is the best by far
DUDE THIS IS THE BEST VID I EVER SEEN FOR MAKING A POLE SPEAR!!!
much appreciated.
"No Bamboo does not grow where I live but it does grow at the hobby store" lmao
7 years later and still helping the wonderers. Thanks man! Good video. And the chickens thier fun to mess with.
PVC pipe be used as well. Double or triple wall construction, installing a polymer, fiberglass, carbon fiber/graphite, aluminum, hardwood, or steel dowel for more rigidity. Reinforce the ends with cord wrapping, thin wall steel, copper or aluminum tubing, or fiberglass fabric and resin/epoxy.
You are an awesome human being, thanks for being on the planet
This is by far the absolute best tutorial on how to make a pole spear. I’m going to make it and then come back and edit if it works!!
Worked?
Dude thank you everyone else who has made a video used materials that were out of this world like things that would cost me around $130 but i just finished mine for $6 i only i had to go to a primitive store and get artificial sinew and thanks again you made it very easy and not with extreme prices
Fantastic "how to" video. Your methods and techniques are simple and practical, plus you showed various spears, but picked the best and explained and demonstrated it's construction clearly.
Thank you. I only wish I lived closer to the water so I could use them more.
Awesome work bro! Glad to see im not alone in these sort of things. Ive had some river cane drying out for around a year, about 7 foot long, just to make fishing spears. Im making mine like these, and im going to spear some gar in a creek where i live
Were about to camp near the beach this coming weekend and I’m planning to make some of these. So yah thanks mate! Great video!
Great channel and video! I already ordered a 7ft pole spear, but I plan to make a smaller pole spear with your method as a backup or for tighter areas. Conveniently, I recently bought bamboo poles to support some sunflowers.
Good work with this!
This was very informative.
Just found your channel and it seems like you produce a lot of cool content.
Super video! Im gonna make one. Your explications are very good.
Good job
much appreciated.
Bro it's so awesome, and you're really good at making them 👌💯
Maybe add another wrap on the bamboo spear just above the prong seperator to get more of a pinch? Just an idea. Great video!
nice video man. i've been wanting to learn how to make one of those. helped a lot! MerkWares
You are great! I love your work... nice explanation!
Really enjoyed the video, and thanks for the laughs. I have a modified frog gig I use on my blowgun / walking staff.
Bamboo lives at the hobby store
lol me too
I used the Hawaiian sling when I lived in California , Great video Man , Thank You .
Yup, we do, I have them in a box in our new warehouse/shop space. I just need to take some pictures of them to put on the website. I also have them in coyote. Thanks for the compliments. The spears reflect how much I miss the ocean.
oooh! muchas gracias amigo x compartirmelo aree ese y el arpon para pescar jeje esta bueno tu video saludos de tabasco mexico suerte amigo👍
Best diy pole spear I've seen
ROFL great vid with a great last 15 seconds. Ty for posting.
Awesome! Thanks I'm gonna try and make one 👍
Most excellent in every way!
If u didnt have a angle grinder what would u use to sharpen
Great spears! Do you make the Multicam cover for the Emberlite stoves? Nice instructional man. I need to try this. I've spear fished with a knife attached to a tree limb at the river...never had much luck. Maybe a three tine spear like yours will work much better. I like the addition of the tubing to propel the spear too.
I like this guy!, yes this is the best spear video done clearly by a master. Stick em chickens son!
aw, you are too kind. I'm just a big nerd. Thank you so much for the kind comments. Hehe, I love my chickens. They've been really laying well lately. They are my small victory over living in the suburbs with a HOA.
No HOA congrats don't know why so many think that's a great idea. I don't see any reason why I need to pay someone to become a pain in my rear. To many do it freely lol
Steve Christmad
Oh that's what I mean.. they are my victory over the HOA. They can't see into my back yard. One day though, I dream of some country property.
Thanks for the how to video I'm going to give it a try.
Excellent video man, what spyderco was that?
thats brilliant i have all those tools and glue, nice video
What was that word in the end lura???
Does this also work for underwater spear fishing? and is there anyway you think you can make it break down into sections to ease transporting it places?
Yup, they work just as well under water as above. I carry just the elastic band in my pack figuring I can improvise the spear about anywhere. But you certainly could make a take down version with a little ingenuity. Pretty much everything you'd need you can find at the hardware store. Check out my friend Madison with his homemade pole spear: ruclips.net/video/Jx5yHFYJS5k/видео.html Commercial ones are also fairly cheap. Even the heavy aluminum professional pole spear in my video only costs about $75 from www.spearfishing.cc.
Loving your vids
much appreciated
question, heating bamboo.. doesn't the chambers expand when heated and blow out the side of the bamboo?
Excellent idea and video
I haven't had it explode but I have had it pop suddenly when trying to bend it. I would be interesting to see what happens if I leave it on the fire too long.
Thank You....I'm italian and you are awesome !!
What make and model is the factory made polespear? Also, 3 prong polespear tips are intended for relatively small fish. Flopper tips are for medium to large fish. Slip tips and Break Away tips are for large and extra large fish.
it's made by Ray Odor. Around here the only fish I could really spear are small. This pole spear has both the three prong and a flopper.
what's the thing that you use to fire the spear with at the end of the video called? (not the surgeons tubing)
It is called an Atlatl or Womera (australian).
Dude that so cool
Living that primitive life 🤘
Thanks for this video. I am going to try something similar to kill eels in my fish trap
I use that sign wire to make throwing spikes as well!
hahaha best evil laugh i heard in a long time lol, and great how to video
What plant were you eating???
Thanks for explaining 1 spear piercing vs. 3 sharp piercings on the top. Never got that. Saw it on "Naked and Afraid" and was wondering why ...
The plant is called Purslane. Grows everywhere. glad you liked the video.
Purslane is ABSOLUTELY wonderful! And high in vitamin E! Verdolaga. Maaaabyy a more authentic topping on tacos than shredded cabbage? Don't quote me on that, but I DO know that it is ABSOLUTELY used as a taco topping (al Mexicana) in certain regions. Of course, al Mexicana doesn't even have to have the cabbage or verdolaga, as chopped onion and cilantro are far more common in the US. And my jam, btw. With the spicy green salsa. Sorry, were we talking about fishing spears?
retwine the bamboo spear tighter, just above the cross spacers. that will bring them barbs in closer and make it stonger and maybe you can narrow the spikes more too so theyre not so wide aswell :) nice spears
if you retwine it will bring it into your more desired width
Thx dude ur vid really helped me out
you are very welcome.
How much would it be to buy 2
Awesome video
Great vid , enjoyed it . cheap to make . a larger one should be a good carp spear , their moving now. Green bamboo sections - one joint in a fire blows like a firecracker . Steam buildup in the joint . joint splits. watch the kids though
could u use the bottom part of a fishing rod? i broke the top bit. cheers
It depends. What you want is something long enough to reach the fish, stiff enough to not break or bend, but light enough to be fast. I would worry about any sort of broken fiberglass pole as there may be some nasty splinters.
Dude, great video, what is the name of the eatable plant you mentioned within the first 35 seconds? would love to know!!
It's called Purslane. It grows everywhere and is cultivated as a crop except here in the US were it is treated as a weed.
MerkWares Thanx !! Going to grow it in my garden!!
did you ever make the atlatl video? i couldn't seem to find it?
oscar gonzalez i have not. I've got some footage, just haven't had a chance to finish up the video.
For the commercial spear is there a web site from where u got it from ??
check out www dot spearfishing dot cc
Great vid I was wondering where did u get the commercial pole spear and how much was it👍
Got if form Ray Odor.. cost about $100 if I remember correctly.
What is the approximate outside and inside diameter of the bamboo pole you used?
I'd guess it is about .5 in on the small end up to 1in outside diameter on the thick end.
Love the video!
Great video A+++
Nice one.
I was wondering were did u get commercial fishing spear ???
I picked it up from Ray Odor. It's a heavy spear. I hope to one day use it in the ocean.
the ending was the best, lmao
How convenient that you had an Emberlit to heat the bamboo with!
I'm 11..and I'm English...yeah no forests in England that are truly wild like astralia and America and Africa ect. so i dunno why I'm watching this...but I'm gonna traval the world and make my own vidios ...thanks for reading this in neassery comment ...comment and I'll like!
If you haven't already search out Ray Mears on youtube. Some of his work highlights the wilderness in the UK.
oops! bad azz izz fizz sound awesome
oops! bad azz izz fizz u a girl
oops! bad azz izz fizz
Go to Scotland 🏴 Alba gu Brath
love the woomera. do you live in Australia?
No, but I hope to visit some day. I love studying primitive living skills and so have researched aboriginal Australians a bit.
super cool!
What knot do you use when binding the barbs
I just do a wrap over a loop of line. When I'm done I pass the end through the loop and pull it under the windings.
Can I put PVC pipes instead of bamboo ... it should work but will it be too heavy ??? I mean it will be heavy right so as I think of that it will not shoot as Good as that or at least I need to buy harder ruber bands ??? Is that right?
HI Shad, PVC is a bit too flexible in my opinion in the longer lengths. But ya never know until you try it. The heavier the pole the stronger the rubber bands you'll need. PVC is super cheap so it should be pretty easy to test.
very good friend
Hey Merk! I'm thinking of either buying or making a spear for fishing. im pretty young, 13 years old, do you think I would be able to pull the rubber loop far back enough? im not going all-out on this, just looking for a summer hobby for my lakehouse. ill mostly be hunting carp, pumpkin seed, and maybe a little bass.
Oceanside Creations Most definitely. It all depends on the weight of the spearpole. That aluminum one I have had a pretty heavy band to move all that mass. But those lightweight bamboo spears use relatively thin surgical tubing. You can find the stuff at the hardware store where they sell water hose for sinks and ice machines. You can always adjust the length of the tubing as well to make it easier while still maintaining lightning speed with the spear.
MerkWares How about a 4 foot long 1/2 inch wide metal pole spear with the three-prong design. Im not very experienced with these things that much so I am not sure what to buy. I'm planning on buying one from a website. Thanks a lot for helping me with this! I trust you'll have good advice.
Oceanside Creations No worries. It's my pleasure. Um, I'm wondering how heavy that metal pole would be. Again it all depends on how you plan to use it. I can use very light bamboo pole spears to great effect on the small fish, frogs, and crayfish. I bought my pole spear from Ray Odor for a trip to Hawaii that never happened. It is a heavy spear because I was planning on hunting large reef fish. There are some decent pole spears for sale online that are pretty affordable. Down in the 30-50 dollar range. Search for PoleSpear on amazon and read the reviews.
Great spear... cought a very nice Mackerel.
Made many of those as a kid
down in Corpus, can't really flounder gig anymore, to many limits..
Merk can you plz do a Tutorial on how to make a speargun for fishing my parents say they won't buy me one i have to make it please it will mean a lot to me -garren
thanks was really helpful
what's taht thing you made at the end ? :O
That would be my Atlatl... I still have to make a video on it.
how long should i hold bamboo over fire? im using my grill, hopefully it will work
The grill should work great. I've even used the burner on my kitchen stove. You'll want to experiment on a piece of bamboo you don't mind ruining... Hold it high enough that the bamboo doesn't scorch but heats up well. I've noticed my bamboo takes on a shine when it is ready to bend. When you bend the bamboo it will bend like heavy wire and remain that way. If it tries to spring back you need more heat. However if you scorch it too deeply it will just crack and break rather than bend.
what kind of fish would you use this for
unfortunately I don't have many options where I live. I use them on carp. However, in the ocean you can use it on just about anything, and if it were legal I could probably use it on trout and bass.
thanks for the vidéo mate !
Big THUMBZ UP my friend.
hi man wow i like your Spears - FishingSpear's :D cool and nice made , good vid 5*
Thanks for sharing! And oops, scaring chicken, haha!
wow super nice
Could you do this with PVC piping too?
***** You probably could but I haven't tried. I'm worried that the PVC isn't rigid enough, but it may be just fine.
Many many thanks pro
what type of string/thread did you use?
I just used some waxed nylon thread. Sometimes it is called artificial sinew. You could also use wire to wrap the end.
would a thin piece of PVC pipe work for the pole?
+JOE HARBOR I worry it would be too flexible to hold a fish of any size. but ya never know. May have to give it a try.
I love how he chucks the spear into the fence and breaks it
My poor fence takes alot of abuse.
This is awesome! it will take my carp fishing to a whole new level, MerkWares a how to video for that last tool for throwing would be perfect.
what type of string u use?!?!?
any strong string will work, even wire. In the video I used artificial sinew I bought at the craft store.
I live in Thailand, where people routinely spearfish for food. I can now go native and get me some grub. There are no game wardens to contend with, so I can fish in my backyard and in the canals near me. Thanks!!
Lucky. It's pretty restricted here to just a few species of rough fish.
What kind of wire did you use
+Matthew Luh I wrapped it with nylon string, however any type of craft wire would work. The spear tines were made from the wire used in a sign. I've been able to find even better supplies at the hardware store.
Good Video
Hello , can i replace the glue with another thing ? i can't find it in my country , good video :)
Yes, any sort of water proof glue should work. The aboriginal spears I've seen did not use any glue, only bindings to keep the tines attached. The glue makes it all the more secure.
Thank you very much :)
Hello!
I want add a rubber to my speargun can it help to catch more fish?
Can i enlarge the wire legnth of the speargun for more range ?
Hi Noam, yes, having an elastic on the spear makes it much faster underwater increasing your chance of getting a fish. You can make the spear as large as you like. I've seen spears from australia that were 10 ft in length and thrown with a womera. ruclips.net/video/XUiliNiTxus/видео.htmlm9s
Thank you.
inspired!
can i use a broom stick asa pole?
I suppose that would work just fine.
