    After posting a video of me spear fishing for crawdads • Spearing Crawdads I've had a good number of people asking me to make a vid on how I made my spear. So here is a vid on how I make my own spears. Step by step and a commentary on how they work. Quick, cheap, and fun. I just wish I had more critters I could go after with them.

    PVC pipe be used as well. Double or triple wall construction, installing a polymer, fiberglass, carbon fiber/graphite, aluminum, hardwood, or steel dowel for more rigidity. Reinforce the ends with cord wrapping, thin wall steel, copper or aluminum tubing, or fiberglass fabric and resin/epoxy.

    • @MerkWares
      @MerkWares  10 лет назад

      Yup, they work just as well under water as above. I carry just the elastic band in my pack figuring I can improvise the spear about anywhere. But you certainly could make a take down version with a little ingenuity. Pretty much everything you'd need you can find at the hardware store. Check out my friend Madison with his homemade pole spear: ruclips.net/video/Jx5yHFYJS5k/видео.html Commercial ones are also fairly cheap. Even the heavy aluminum professional pole spear in my video only costs about $75 from www.spearfishing.cc.

      The plant is called Purslane. Grows everywhere. glad you liked the video.

  • @shaunsimmons204
    @shaunsimmons204 3 года назад

    Purslane is ABSOLUTELY wonderful! And high in vitamin E! Verdolaga. Maaaabyy a more authentic topping on tacos than shredded cabbage? Don't quote me on that, but I DO know that it is ABSOLUTELY used as a taco topping (al Mexicana) in certain regions. Of course, al Mexicana doesn't even have to have the cabbage or verdolaga, as chopped onion and cilantro are far more common in the US. And my jam, btw. With the spicy green salsa. Sorry, were we talking about fishing spears?

  • @markrussell1441
    @markrussell1441 8 лет назад +2

    retwine the bamboo spear tighter, just above the cross spacers. that will bring them barbs in closer and make it stonger and maybe you can narrow the spikes more too so theyre not so wide aswell :) nice spears

    • @MerkWares
      @MerkWares  7 лет назад +1

      It depends. What you want is something long enough to reach the fish, stiff enough to not break or bend, but light enough to be fast. I would worry about any sort of broken fiberglass pole as there may be some nasty splinters.

    Can I put PVC pipes instead of bamboo ... it should work but will it be too heavy ??? I mean it will be heavy right so as I think of that it will not shoot as Good as that or at least I need to buy harder ruber bands ??? Is that right?

    • @MerkWares
      @MerkWares  7 лет назад

      HI Shad, PVC is a bit too flexible in my opinion in the longer lengths. But ya never know until you try it. The heavier the pole the stronger the rubber bands you'll need. PVC is super cheap so it should be pretty easy to test.

    Hey Merk! I'm thinking of either buying or making a spear for fishing. im pretty young, 13 years old, do you think I would be able to pull the rubber loop far back enough? im not going all-out on this, just looking for a summer hobby for my lakehouse. ill mostly be hunting carp, pumpkin seed, and maybe a little bass.

    • @MerkWares
      @MerkWares  9 лет назад

      Oceanside Creations Most definitely. It all depends on the weight of the spearpole. That aluminum one I have had a pretty heavy band to move all that mass. But those lightweight bamboo spears use relatively thin surgical tubing. You can find the stuff at the hardware store where they sell water hose for sinks and ice machines. You can always adjust the length of the tubing as well to make it easier while still maintaining lightning speed with the spear.

    • @oceansidecreations1879
      @oceansidecreations1879 9 лет назад

      MerkWares How about a 4 foot long 1/2 inch wide metal pole spear with the three-prong design. Im not very experienced with these things that much so I am not sure what to buy. I'm planning on buying one from a website. Thanks a lot for helping me with this! I trust you'll have good advice.

    • @MerkWares
      @MerkWares  9 лет назад

      Oceanside Creations No worries. It's my pleasure. Um, I'm wondering how heavy that metal pole would be. Again it all depends on how you plan to use it. I can use very light bamboo pole spears to great effect on the small fish, frogs, and crayfish. I bought my pole spear from Ray Odor for a trip to Hawaii that never happened. It is a heavy spear because I was planning on hunting large reef fish.There are some decent pole spears for sale online that are pretty affordable. Down in the 30-50 dollar range. Search for PoleSpear on amazon and read the reviews.

    how long should i hold bamboo over fire? im using my grill, hopefully it will work

    • @MerkWares
      @MerkWares  10 лет назад +1

      The grill should work great. I've even used the burner on my kitchen stove. You'll want to experiment on a piece of bamboo you don't mind ruining... Hold it high enough that the bamboo doesn't scorch but heats up well. I've noticed my bamboo takes on a shine when it is ready to bend. When you bend the bamboo it will bend like heavy wire and remain that way. If it tries to spring back you need more heat. However if you scorch it too deeply it will just crack and break rather than bend.

      unfortunately I don't have many options where I live. I use them on carp. However, in the ocean you can use it on just about anything, and if it were legal I could probably use it on trout and bass.

      Lucky. It's pretty restricted here to just a few species of rough fish.

    What kind of wire did you use

      +Matthew Luh I wrapped it with nylon string, however any type of craft wire would work. The spear tines were made from the wire used in a sign. I've been able to find even better supplies at the hardware store.

    Hello , can i replace the glue with another thing ? i can't find it in my country , good video :)

      Yes, any sort of water proof glue should work. The aboriginal spears I've seen did not use any glue, only bindings to keep the tines attached. The glue makes it all the more secure.

      Hi Noam, yes, having an elastic on the spear makes it much faster underwater increasing your chance of getting a fish. You can make the spear as large as you like. I've seen spears from australia that were 10 ft in length and thrown with a womera. ruclips.net/video/XUiliNiTxus/видео.htmlm9s
