Nice! I know that guy. It’s interesting, a lot of online information about recording the flute warns about not miking near the headjoint to avoid the airstream. But, like you, I love some air!
Hey good video. I was looking for some flute mixing tutorials..! I play indian bamboo flute. Do you feel it is ok to add this much of air? I get a lot of air in my mixes.
I am mixing flutes (pro players only)for two years now, this video is not perfect, it sounds like my early mixes. My suggestion is to place mic above flutist's head and point it down towards headjoint, close mic possition, distance 40cm. To much noise from keys are present in sample. For me it works best, large diaphragm vocal condenser, i have tried all kind of stereo/mono recording techiques, different mics etc... I suggest not to use compressor at all on flute, just eq the flute, actually lower airy frequencies, oposite like in that video, but it depends of what kind of mic you use. Add pingpong stereo delay, compressed reverb with predelay eq-ed 500-2kHz and widen stereo image on reverb bus. That is it for the flute track. When you limit master with limiter, the flute will be dynamic and will sound great, with enough airy sound. This is my mixing procedure I use in current recordings. But thanks for video, I know there is not much flute recording tutorials and I also had to learn all by myself. BTW: The flutist wasn't perfect, last tone in sample the intonation falls down, I usually request to record the track again in such situations.
@@HomeRecordingNetwork I will first I have to finish all my covid projects, I am not doing this full time :) As far as I have seen your eq curve and compare it to your sound you are searching for, I think you should try with different brighter mic. I have recorded also piccolo, alt and bass flute, maybe it would be best to make demo, what problems did I have with all of them.
I actually don’t mix flute very often. I am in the rock genre. This flute was recorded with with an akg c414, one of the brightest mics on the market. Good luck though bud! Keep at it! One day I hope you get to do this full time. It takes awhile to get there. Cheers!
@@HomeRecordingNetwork I am also in other genre, but my wife is classical flutist, currently in covid situation we started to record some songs, we are recording something like pop classics, at the begining I didn't have any clue what to to with that material. Mostly acustic instruments, piano, double bass, accustic guitar, flutes, etc..., but my early mixes are far from beeing good and I am doing it completely differently right now,. As an example, why you should not use compression on flutes, it kills dynamics. ruclips.net/video/sAWQYz2AlXY/видео.html Here are some of my early mixes, which are decent but far from beeing perfect and all of them have compression on flutes ruclips.net/video/4Pk3EHeKsp8/видео.html ruclips.net/video/SM3XSnjhZik/видео.html ruclips.net/video/eGvmRF3e3Os/видео.html ruclips.net/video/yB4idJbaBMs/видео.html All of my current mixes which do not use compression on flutes are much better and punchier and I am still learning, I will upload videos in few weeks, when I will get all the video material from performers.
Super helpful! Mixing acoustic/female vox/flute, so flute has to be just right - I like the 1500 boost and lower cut ( I cut 3dB @ 300)
👍 thanks for watching!

Hey bud thanks! You may not need to add this much brightness in your mixes. It all depends on your taste.

Thanks for the tips! Would you mind making a video? I’m sure it would help a lot of people out there.

@@gasperstifter Nice bud! Keep on doing you! Just remember... there is no right or wrong way to do this stuff. That's why I love audio!
Name of the editing software please!
Love from india🇮🇳
Logic Pro X! Thanks!
Good job
Can u pls upload a video edit in audacity
Thanks man! What are you looking for? I don’t actually have audacity.
@@HomeRecordingNetwork i need mixing of flute on audacity software
Sorry bud but I don’t have audacity.
Your EQing of the flute made the flute sound unnatural. It sounded better with the EQ off than what you did to it.
Agree to disagree lol
Fantastic tutorial. Just do the opposite of what this guy did
Thanks for being so kind bud... lol
