For example, knowing the total number of votes cast should allow you to compare that with the gap between candidates and allow you to state, for example, that Trump needs 60% of the remaining uncounted votes, or Biden 70% percent. That would give the public more of a feel for the likelihood of those changes happening. "Just chipping away" tells us nothing.
