Jewish Agency for Israel invites Michael Sandel assuming since he is Jewish he will find a way to Philosophically absolve Israel from respecting the Palestinian's Right of Return to their homes. Harvard Professor Sandel being a human being above all, concludes that The Law of Return for Jews should not exist without the Right of Return for Palestinians. Thank you Makom TV for Sharing.
I did not expect prof. Sandel , teacher of humanity! Saying "good couse" for bombing !! He should ask himself , why?! But we should all listen to him , he is the best teacher , the best human being !
Excellent. The ethic of solidarity. He is magnificent. Taking audience onto a journey of self challenge and discovery. And so well spoken and confident in than. Respect is due.
Great public discourse!! As a member of any "community"( by birth or by choice), if one elects not to accept the responsibility for the wrongs that has been done by that community, then equally one can not take pride in the achievement accomplish by the same community. One can not has it both way!!
Need this modern- time Aristotle and Plato like Professor Sanel in this selfish, greedy, dark time when just Economics, Greed, is at the center 0f human life. Humanity needs persons like Sandel to survive and thrive. Coexistence, negotiation -humans can negotiate everything- Thank you. Hope philosophers like him would be celebrity in this dark time.
On Principle: I don't think we should have moral responsibility extending across generations John Howard, rather, moral responsibility is an individual responsibility Henry Haight. We; however, are responsible for what happens today, thus, the interests of the other becomes our responsibility. In the case of bombing: Moral Complexity would argue on loyalty and solidarity, I am a man first with obligations to those close to me as Jean Jacques - Rousseau. History teaches us to listen and learn from what happens in the past and into the present day in order to have continuity. Thank you very much Professor Michael Sandel.
I am only at minute 21 but it seems that a distinction needs to be made between individual and a nation's responsibility. A nation is tributary to its history economically and morally and insofar as clear causal links can be established between past crimes and current discriminations then the state needs to set an example to try to rectify them as long as this does infringe on anyone's rights. Israel cannot for example claim spécial rights for historical wrongs and at the same time refuse to take on the responsibility of writing their wrong actions towards the Palestinians.
Sandel is a communitarian, so it's no surprise that he blurs the lines between individual and community. He has justifications for this view though and his books are well worth reading
If you're interested in a philosophical discussion on abstract moral/legal obligations to right past wrongs this lecture might have some interest. It won't provide any answers. I found it just avoided the topic "The Law of Return and the Right of Return" and mostly a complete waste of time.
Israel uprooted the Palestinian only yesterday after 1948 who r still alive in "diaspora" having the master keys to their own home in Tal Al Rabeiaa; AlQuds, Yafa, BerSabaa and other fowns and villages. Zionist denied Edward Saaid as a Palestinian. Unfortunately Zionism serve imperial interst of the west, "homeland" haven't worked fir consciousness Jews.
Very politically charged for a "theoretical" talk. Sandel presupposes that Israel created the refugee problem, that Palestinians really want no more than their own state, that Zionism is an ethnic club with no historical context, that Israel holds all the cards for the Palestinian outcome, etc., etc. This makes the discussion of reparations loaded. Why not ask a Muslim crowd about reparations to dhimmi Jews for centuries of mistreatment, pre-Zionism? Why is a tiny Jewish state a jihad trigger and not an opportunity for such reparation? Why the talk about freedom's link to morality? Does this mean the unfree Palestinian Authority gets a pass? That's moral relativism; which might also be called tribalism (two moralities for two peoples) -- the thing liberals are supposed to abhor.Let's also wonder why Chinese Americans don't shout "not in my name!" over Tibet, or why Quakers weren't tarred by Nixon. Because more is going on with Israel/Jews than Sandel is objective enough or informed enough to tackle.
what dhimis, stop using cxoncepts you dpont even understsand, dhimis were tax [payers like any other citizen just like now you pay your taxes. so when is is israel going to publically aplogize to palestinians?

If they are peaceful people and pass a background check and demonstrate they can provide for themselves, what would be the harm?
Vibrissa Tuft great idea. How about applying it on both sides starting the 1900s?

what an amazing diplomat: in the middle of such a crwod of zionist he manges to explain that they're wrong is an act of heroism.

Prof Sandel seems to address only Western situations ignoring many other brutalities around the world .
excellent public dialog.
