People who have dreams and no take action on them are usually the ones who feel good about themselves in pointing the mistakes of those who are following their dream. In order to balance the frustration, they can only concentrate on what is wrong instead of just feeling the music.
I really find some of the comments about this performance baffling. First of all, we don't have to choose. We are fortunate that we live at a time when we can click links and up comes Rubinstein, Hamelin, Zimerman, Rachmaninoff, Argerich and a whole host of great pianists. I think this is a beautiful performance -- commanding technique (I think it helps if you have studied this piece and therefore have an inkling of what it takes to play it at this level) and musical intelligence/sensitivity typical of Marc-Andre Hamelin. I'm very happy that we have it. Would I give up the performance by _______ (fill in the blank) for this? I don't have to!
Donald Allen I think you’re absolutely right. Most of all it’s not a matter of being the most beloved one but a different point of view. I find it amazing
The fact we have access to so many high quality recordings is incredible. It is taken for granted. Before recording and the internet, one of the common class would be lucky just to hear anything by Chopin when it was written.
It's just the perfect performance: beautiful sound, fluent tempo, precise articulation, sparkling virtuoso brilliance, the typical Chopin-rubato: an absolut male heroic interpretation..Great!!
His technique is so all-encompassing that he has every second to caress the notes that he hit... one undeniable thing is that this really is outlandishly proficient playing. Such that this is bound to make me feel ambivalent: the sense of struggle and passion and overcoming is completely removed (to outlandish effect), yet the interpretation itself is eloquent and convincing. What to make of this remains uncertain after I watched this again and again.
Yes, please ask maestro to make a video of Ballade no 1 too ;^) He has eliminated almost all tension and excess motion from playing, and seems to never miss a note ;^)
One other point: there's a lot of arm-chair quarterbacking going on here. I really don't think you are in a position (though of course you have the right) to criticize a pianist of the stature of Hamelin if you don't play this piece yourself and play it well, which I doubt is true of most of those posting nonsense here.
Most comment section criticism is nonsensical as you say, but I believe most have a position to criticize despite personal level. Critiquing a professional as a non-pro comes out of comparison to other pros and perceived expectations of how something is to be executed. Stating that Hamelin missed a note is nonsensical. Nothing helpful or interesting can be derived from such critique, but critiquing interpretive choices or touch can lead to good conversation as to what one prefers or as to why performing one way is better. Hamelin is my personal favorite. His Chopin is performed with superb clarity unmatched by any other pianists. If one finds critical failing as no pros, their opinion has standing if they can defend critique with comparison to other interpretations or with current established precedent of how a piece or composer is supposed to sound like.
Bravo! Sem exageros dinâmicos estruturais e sem a falta de fraseado Chopiniano, além de "com" a simplicidade que flui pela própria beleza da melodia e harmonia, as quais não precisam de pontos de inflexão, mas falam por si mesmas!
I'd love to see what the people criticizing Hamelin make of this rendition. Well it sure is a bit different, but he has quite a tone - that's a given. Bottom line: for me it's no less enjoyable and thoughtful than the praised Zimerman recording. As MrZnoo said: MAH and Katsaris own the day:)
Hamelin's Chopin is incredible. The clarity in his playing is unmatched by any other pianist. The tone you refer to is that of clarity. His focus on tone clarity in the melody is as clean as one would expect in Mozart.
I'm truly stunned by this - I've never considered Hamelin to be a poet/artist, just a virtuous who blasts through music as if it were meant to be torn to shreds. His understanding of the various melodic lines here is masterful. His tone is occasionally harsh, but overall this is extraordinary - until 5:08 ish.
@f1f1s Definitely a few at 5:34, but none at 2:52... and splitting hairs is what the comments board is for! The performance is simply my favorite on youtube, even with the mistakes at 5:34.
Aarrau was in a category all by himself... those days and pianist are gone... I LOVED watching this video... and found some of it completely thrilling... although... I never came close to shedding a tear... go figure... (none of the new composers ever make me want to cry either...)
Yes, I know I am a moron and am splitting hairs right now, but Hamelin has made mistakes here. At 2:52... And what was that at 5:34? Now feel free to shoot me for scolding and enjoy this brilliant rendition (with reasonably few rubato, by the way).
I hear something off at 5:34 that’s the most beautiful part of this piece. ❤️ I always replay the button just to listen to that part. But there’s something weird in this video. Maybe he’s playing the wrong note mistakenly. But his performance is great❤️
@@milindadewalamuni4717 yeah it's almost as if he would put some touches here and there, they do not sound as bad as a literal wrong note. he's special
2.37-2.44. there a rest after the RH chords first time to contrast with the repeat second time He, like .so many players ,ignore this detail. I see Chopin frowning perhaps. !?
Hamelin is undoubtedly an astounding pianist and one of my favorites, but this is not up to the standard set by Zimerman and Kissin. Could it be that Hamelin is somewhat bored by this frequently played piece, which hardly challenges his commanding technique?
you guys are crazy, the slight errors in the wickedly difficult section are far less than even someone like Rubenstein makes, listen to his recording. Pointing out the few flaws in the pianists playing is short sighted and small minded. Take Martha Argerich for example, widely regarded as one of the best pianists living today. She makes glaring mistakes in her version of Rachmaninovs 3rd, however the speed and interpretation place her in a realm of her own, Hamelin's performance is accurate
+주영석 Did you come here to listen to this amazing performance in order to see how many times he will by accident hit a wrong key and then comment it with a 'miss'? Like, if you notice only that, better stay at home and play your own flawless version and shut the heck up. Thanks.
I would rather watch and l listen to Hamelin being bored with Chopin than watch Zimerman performing the Chopin Concerto and winking at the end of the piece to the camera like a complete and utter idiot.
Bradley Vorjohan He shouldn't wink at the camera anyway, whether I want to look at him or whether I DON'T want to look at him. The fact that he even DID that shows how stupid and disrespectful he is towards the music.
What a poor performance for such a brilliant pianist... After listening to his rendition of the Godowsky's etudes on the Chopin etudes this was really disappointing.
One of the best Chopin's interpretation, the pianist is absolutely brilliant!!!
Of course he's brilliant! It's Hamelin!
CHOPIN's Music is freaking mind boggling! So much colors...depth....emotions...dimensions....you name it.
Flawless perfomance, no tension during his performance..a master at piano I say :).

Well said Donald - why some people have to find the 'greatest pianist' is a mystery to me .
I couldnt have said better 🙏
The fact we have access to so many high quality recordings is incredible. It is taken for granted. Before recording and the internet, one of the common class would be lucky just to hear anything by Chopin when it was written.
He is truly one of the great pianists alive today. An master piece of music and interpretation. My piano teacher raves about him.
Never knew he recorded this. He's great at Chopin as well!
No flamboyancy or show-boating here. Just simple perfection! HE has got it where it counts; at the finger tips. Bravo Herr Hamelin.
I simply can't find words to describe this. Truly perfect.
Indeed 😊❤

Beautiful audio recording! Thank you.
both cinematography and audio... !!!

another phenomenal talent who makes us all small and worthless
Bravo! HAMELIN! Beautiful! Merci!
He owned me. I was with him on every note.
Lovely playing TY for posting
Hamelin, in full command of this major musical piece of Chopin
This maestro has the passion for this composition! Not many "accomplished' musicians have his passion for the music of Chopin.
Mad Luv to Hamelin! Great Upload!
amazing. Thank you!
Lovely playing.TY tompilk for posting.
He makes everything look so easy. I think this might be my fave no3 and I usually don't listen to MAH for Chopin

: ) I like Hamelin's performance because I can't play like him. ha......still practicing this piece....
Applause !
HAMELIN IS #1
Too fast? My ass is too fast. Hamelin is perfection.
Hamelin makes playing Chopin look as easy as doing the C major scale. lol
The C major scale may be "easy", but some the most difficult repertoire for piano is in C major. Chopin's etude, op. 10, No. 1 is such an example.
@@bigl5343 c major is without a doubt the hardest scale

@gwizvideo who gives a shit about missed/unmissed notes, while he creates such a powerful, and wide sonic ecstasy?
good job

why didn't he play the ballade no.1..

Probably the easiest Ballade out of the four.
Mr. Hamelin could easily do any of them and the hardest of any compositions because he is recognized by many as the best pianist in the world.
Not for my taste , as you can see .

Way too fast and uneven in tempos. Sounds bored to death.

Well, Zimmerman definitely performs this better. You don't have to look at him.

Will do.
