Boyz to Men was more clean cut, gentleman type and when Jodeci came out they had more of that bad boy feel. You'll think they was rappers but they sang. Both great groups but different.

JODECI consist of two sets of brothers the Hailey brothers and the Degate brothers. Mr. Dalvin Degate (the rapper) and Devante Degate (the writer) as well as K-CI (Lead singer) and JOJO (the Lead singer) form JODECI. De'vante, the man playing the piano, is the mastermind behind all Jodeci songs. He is genius writer, composer and producer of ALLL of the JODECI albums. K-CI Hailey and JOJO Hailey, the two singers bring the soul to the group's songs while Mr. Dalvin brings the edge and urban sound; together they create a "New Jack Swing" jazzy / r&b sound. This sound is known as JODECI.

Diddy directed this video, Jodeci changed R&B, and are the reason R&B groups and soulful singing got back popular, before them soulful R&B groups were fading away, they brought it back with an edge, from their fashion, tattoos, and attitude, and groups started to copy till this day, that's why new singers and new rappers always mentioning and sampling them

The two lead singers are brothers. The skinny guy is K-ci and the bigger one who keeps his shirt on is Jojo Hailey. They are cousins to Fantasia. The reason Jojo keeps his shirt on is because he's not ripped as the other guys and he's insecure about his body. The reason why he's dressed down is an attempt to give him a sexy look with clothes to compensate for what he believes he lacks physically. If my memory serves me correctly, the video was shot on a soundstage so it was relatively cool.
In the late 90's the Hailey brothers fell out with the other two guys (Donald aka Devante and his brother Dalvin Degrate) and went on to form the duo Kci and Jojo. As a duo they had crossover success scoring their first hot 100 single #1 with the song "all my life." They later reconciled and Dalvin did production work for subsequent Kci and Jojo albums.
Kci dated Mary J. Blige at the beginning of her career. Mary has talked about their tumultuous relationship but always gloss over the facts. Both her and Kci used to get high on drugs, physically fight, then make up and make music. It was known around the industry that Kci would beat Mary badly but most kept their mouth shut. In many people's eyes, Mary wasn't a "victim," she was a participant.
K-ci and Jojo were very competitive. They would also get into fistfights. There was an incident during a Jodeci concert performance where Jojo tried to pull Kci off the stage. You can really catch a glimpse of their competitiveness on the unplugged version of the song "lately." Assuming you can read body language and sense tension.
During the later stages of their career, the group had a laundry list of run ins with the law. Kci was arrested for exposing himself during a concert; K-ci and Devante were accused a raping a woman together; Jojo was accused of domestic violence, and so on and on. Much of this was the result of alcohol and drug abuse.
Perhaps the saddest tale of their downfall was what happened to Devante. In the 90's Devante was a very sought after songwriter/producer. He discovered Missy, Timbaland, Magoo, Ginuwine, Stevie J, and a few others. When Jodeci switched to Death Row records under notorious strongman, Suge Knight, Devante was the victim of a home invasion (many think was orchestrated by Knight) where he was sodomonized. His behaviour became increasingly erratic as he spent the few years after trying to prove his masculinity. Adding to his stress, was the fact that Suge tried to bully him out of production credits (as he is famously known to have done with others) to the point where Mike Tyson had to intervene on Devante's behalf.
In those days not much was known about PTSD. The trauma of the robbery, stress of working for what was essentially a mob boss, and his drug dependence saw the once highly respected and highly sought after producer succumb to mental illness. As his behavior became increasing out of control, he began to withdraw from the industry and became something of a recluse. One of the saddest testaments to his downfall was a TMZ video of him being clearly out of his mind trashing a subway restaurant.
The entertainment industry is a black hole where many dreams go to die. With any hope, the tragedy of the befallen will shine a light on the dangers that lurk in the dark.

Jodeci remains the best male vocal group of the last 30 years. They are an inflection point in male R&B groups. You literally can't get ANY of the male groups that come after if Jodeci didn't exist. Their image and their vocal blend was revolutionary.

I don't know if it has been said before, but K-Ci and JoJo used to sing gospel when they were kids. If you want to check them out the group was called Little Cedric and the Hailey Singer and the album is called Jesus Saves.

Jodeci is my favorite 90s r&b boyband, they brought something fresh & exciting to the game that a lot of boybands at that time hadn’t done.
