    What do you mean no one knows why the Punisher kills criminals? That's obvious. The organized crime leader that killed his family was caught, and there was a trial, but he got off scot-free, due to a technicality I think. The justice system failed Frank and his family. So he took matters into his own hand. He kills, because he knows that the system often lets criminals out, or gives them too light a sentence, and innocent people end up being harmed again, like his family. By killing criminals, he prevents them from harming any more innocents. Any writer which portrays Castle like Batman (injures criminals, but doesn't kill) is seriously mischaracterizing him.

    • @leonkenedy2988
      @leonkenedy2988 7 лет назад +9

      Exactly, he is a "what if" of this personal level of distrust we have on the justice system itself. Frank Castle realize that if the Justice system wont condemn those criminal leader then he himself will sacrifice himself and do what is right. Because let us be honest here, Castle is actually Batman that is willing to cross the line for criminal but his nature involve killing for even the less criminal act. So he is still Batman but is more like Thomas Wayne Batman in his ideal instead.

      Having read the punisher back in the 90's I vaguely remember the writers saying exactly what your saying in the comics. There was an issue where frank talks about how he watches and checks who's guilty/a criminal and how he targets them. Some of the lower level guys he won't kill because they arn't worth it (petty theft for example) or he uses them for information. He'll let minor crimes go to maintain his cover and also he's not there to baby sit every one. There was that other issue or two where he was doing laundry and I think he had to decide to help or not. It was a long time ago but the punisher for me is one of the best "heros" I've ever read. Judge Dredd and The punisher are up there as some of the best heros. I really don't understand why people like batman.

    • @supremedreams6789
      @supremedreams6789 3 года назад +2

      That’s the old school, 90’s version of Punisher that had that motive. Ever since Garth Ennis made his impact on the character, his motive changed.
      Now it’s really just about The Punisher’s addiction for war and killing. That’s why he kills bad guys, saving innocents is secondary. Modern Frank Castle is essentially a sociopathic mass murderer to put it bluntly lmao.

      There's a backstory comic with a young Francis Castelleanos as a teen wanting to become a priest, but he has trouble with forgiveness amd gets kicked out of the priesthood. Hence strengthening his belief that forgiveness is worthless and only punishment counts.

The God they've made up does the same thing with his vengeance in the bible. I call it white americanism. other cultures whom you draw in looking for citizenship/monetary reasons stay, get swallowed up in americanism via television violence/media. but hey, if you're not the top dog, you're losing and fighting to be it right? control/brainwash the rest to join your you.

    7:12 Maybe, as the Punisher, he watched his hero Captain America only catch the bad guys, and began to see that only catching them just gives them chances to escape and cause more trouble later, or that despite all the catching, the world is still filling up with these villains, so he came to the realization that killing wasn't pleasant, and it wasn't "heroic", but it was necessary.
    Or, maybe Frank didn't make the choice to kill when he became the Punisher. Maybe he made the choice to NOT kill when he became Captain America. There could be an internal struggle there we're not aware of. I like that.

    I've always felt it was clear that Castle kills because he justifies his actions as those of a soldier engaged in a literal war.
    The subtext hasn't been all that subtle that he has PTSD (although I think it was still called battle fatigue or shellshock when he was created); his experiences in Vietnam have always been referred to as something that he is constantly thinking of and still living with.

      Captain America stand for something of far more value than cold blooded murder. Frank isnt fit to wear the name imo.
      That doesnt make Frank a bad character or anything of the sort, but he doesnt fit the title of Captain America any more than Cap did wearing the Punisher skull.
      That being said, to answer your question, Id go with Vance Astrovic (spelling?) He was a sweet Captain America and was never even a soldier, to my knowledge. He still upheld Caps mantle quite well. Frank playing as Cap feels very forced. The writing itself makes no sense and just doesnt fit.

      @@redsledgeblu5234 I agree, it doesn’t make any sense at all and it’s completely unnecessary. We already have John Walker (US-Agent) as an alternative Captain America that kills, but still believed in morals and principles.
      Frank being Cap doesn’t fit because he doesn’t care about any of that stuff. Frank doesn’t necessarily fight to protect innocents, that’s just a bonus. Frank fights because of his addiction to war and killing people. Frank is the exact opposite to Captain America, which makes this comic really ironic and ridiculous lmao

    Really enjoy the video, although to your point about stories not really going into detail as to why he kills other than because his family was killed, I'd argue that in Jason Aaron's Punisher Max run they actually reveal his real motivations. If you have read and recall they pretty much say that the punisher was really born in the war and that when he returned home he was just looking for an excuse to kill "the bad guy" (internally he felt this way) and his marriage and his relationship with his family was deteriorating and it was really only the fact that his family died that he was allowed to succumb to his preexisting urges to kill.

    When I saw the title I figured it would be a dystopian story -- the serial mass murdering gun nut is the new face of America. I'm surprised they actually went the other way with it and rehabilitated Castle. This was a cause that he couldn't be cynical about and had to honor, effectively fixing both Castle and this alternate America. Isn't it just perfectly Steve Rogers that even his legacy alone is such a beacon of hope that it repairs what starts out as a darkest timeline?

    I read a different what if? comic about this. I honestly don't remember all of it or the issue but the basic story was this. Captain America was crippled and begged the US and Nick Fury to replace him. They offered it to Frank Castle and he refused because he wanted to go home to his family. They went thru several others ,most dying, before they came back to Castle whose family had died and this time he accepted. He was harder around the edges than Steve Rogers but he was doing the job. Eventually he started to cross the line and the original showed up and stopped him. Frank told him to take back the shield and Steve rolled up his sleeve to show that he was a cyborg now and stated ; Captain America has to be a Man'. Castle reined himself back in and continued as Captain America. Personally I thought that was one of the most powerful lines I ever read. Really loved the comic and still wish I had it.

    Oddly, one of the most frightening What If's I ever read was Volume 1 Number 46. In it, Aunt May was killed by The Burglar while Uncle Ben struggled as a single parent to help Peter. The thing that chills me? In the end, Peter's life was proven to be dramatically better as a result of this, especially in the long-term. It made me feel sad for Aunt May, whose character is limited by traditional treatments of her, except for JMS' maligned tenure. While Ben screwed some things up, it was within a believable framework, not the 'change one hair = Instant Apocalypse' trap many AU's fall into.

    What if Captain America wanted to take over the multiverse? (Taking into consideration his skills, mind, and determination; how everybody trusts him; what happened in Secret Empire; and how he could go after the Infinity Gauntlet, Ultimate Nullifier, or Heart of the Universe.)

    Not sure if this was already mentioned in the comments, but Steve Rogers is one of the very few super powered people Castle jad always respected. Even in the alternate comic where Castle destroys all of marvels heros. (He fucks Cyclops up big time). Right before he does in Cap, he tells him he always respected him as a man and as a soldier.

    Punisher Max went pretty in depth of why the Punisher kills. Basically the Punisher (in that universe at least) is a born soldier and is really only at home when hes at war, the death of his family just freed him to do that. Also, its revealed that his last words to his wife were "I'm leaving," causing Frank to despise himself for not only failing to protect his family but also for choosing to throw it all away in the last moments of his families life. The Punisher is really Punishing himself as he sees death as an easy way out, and the only way he can keep himself alive is to wage war until someone finally end him.

    I think covering "What if?" is a Marvelous idea! Seriously though; tons of fun things you can cover that your subs will love and will provide you with hours upon hours of content. I'd also like to see some DC Elseworlds takes myself, as I am not as familiar with DC and would find that fascinating. Keep up the good work, Rob... ~_~

    the punisher did become a sort of captain America after rogers died in civil war. one of the best what ifs was castle bonding with the venom symbiote. unrelated, my other fav what if was wolverine becoming lord of the vampires.

      Loved that one. If I recall, Steve was actually cloned by Red Skull. Skull, disguised as Cap, took over the US as the president after the war. They gave everyone the Super Soldier Serum, except African Americans, then they revealed that Cap was still frozen in ice. He resurfaces and makes a different Avengers group and manage to beat the Skull and the other Super Soldiers. Had some of the best, and weirdest, changes...like when Wolverine was actually the Hulk (no adamantium but he was possessed by the Wendigo and could control it), The punisher was the new Iron Man, and a bunch of other cool stuff. I think this was even a 2 part "What if". Epic.

    I want a new gritty punisher where he gets the serum somehow while he's stealing it for someone else. You have an incredible anti hero right there and no much dark stuff but also exciting action you could pull from that story out could last at least 3 movies

    been done before in 90s. Cap fell in explosion during fight w red skull. not dead but gravely injured. passed title on 1st offered to Frank Castle but turned down. became punisher. panels offers hints to others who were offered role and took it. ended badly. man wolf. vampire. Duke just went insane and killed his team. Frank took on role as Capt. America by day but Punisher by night. Steve Rogers returned from injury as The Captain. hunted down castle. 1 blow to the gut disabled Castle. US Gov wanted Steve to "Sanction him w lethal force. no doubt." Steve instead explained the role of Cpt.America not as limited but symbol of hope as man of flesh & blood who could stand for an ideal. when Frank asked why Rogers couldn't take up role again he showed him that he was now a cyborg. Now as for back half there was 2 parter. what if Cpt America had led squad of Super Soldiers during ww2. he reacted 1 second faster and saved Dr.Erskine from the bullet. Doctor created note super soldiers. led successful invasion of Berlin Germany. then moved on to Russia and Moscow. Pax Americana. gets very dark from there. 2nd part is Steve Rogers POTUS.
