  • There was SO MUCH oil on the sticky aperture blades and in rest of the aperture assembly in this Minolta MC Rokkor-PF 1:1.4 f=58mm.
But it's not that hard to fix, just remember to set some small mark's BEFORE you disassemble the aperture system, so you can put it back in again in the correct way.
I use Isopropylalcohol 99% to clean the aperture system and blades.

NOTE: Do NOT! use Acetone on platic part's, it will damage / melting the plastic!!!

Thank you so much for this teardown, it helped me give some TLC to my Minolta lens which I had bought cheap years ago from a thrift store (somebody had stored it wide open...) Works perfectly now! Cheers!

Used a little bit of alcohol on a working aperture to try and get the oil off got stuck because of it.
Saw how much it took you to clean it upset myself because if I would have left it alone it would have been fine
Watched video and was about to start when the blades started moving freely again. Thankfully.

Hi! Thanks for this video, super helpful! My lens doesn't go back to wide open, it stops down at f/2. Could it be a spring that is faulty? Tk u!

I have a vintage RMC Tokina 28 mm 2.8 lens, which the spring doesn't work seems to be, since the aperture is fully open. If I open the lens at the back and deactivate the spring, can I manually use the aperture? I saw that it is a solution. I use the lens exclusively for video on a BMCC.

Hi I got a problem on my Minolta MC ROkkor 55 f 1.7 where I can open the blades to 1.7 but then to close them again I need to use the switch on the side as it won't close by itsself. The blades are not oily like in this video. What could be the problem?

If there is oil on the blades, and they stick, as mine now does on my Sears Auto Rokkor 55mm 1.4 , how do you clean blades that don't expose all their surface?

Where does the oil come from in the first place exactly? Can/should some kind of grease be used on certain parts of the lens to allow softer movement (as long as they aren't in contact with the aperture assembly)? Very entertaining video!!

The oil actually comes from the focus helicoids, the oil will over long time separate from the grease and in that way slowly going into the aperture assembly and ending up on the blades. The only way to cleaning the aperture assembly and of course the aperture blades, is to fully diassemble the aperture assembly and clean it with Isopropylalcohol 99% (80% will also work fine). REMEMBER...! Never use Acetone! it will soften the blades if they are made of plastic!
I have made another about, "How to NOT cleaning the oily aperture assembly in a lens", you can see it right here: ruclips.net/video/2LfH3P2AJpQ/видео.html

Thanks for your video. My blades were stuck open and now they seem to work better, but now the aperture ring won't stay open by itself at F1.4, it rests at F2. I didn't disassemble the whole aperture blade system, just cleaned it on each side. Do you think there is still oil stuck in there or something else?

Can you use deoxit spray to clean/loosen the blades? I have just purchased this lens and have the same issue. I don't have the tools to really do this thorough disassembly.

I don't know the "Deoxit" spray so I have NO (0) idea how good or bad it will work or it could damage the aperture blades, that's why I use Isopropylalcohol to clean the aperture assembly, but you will need to open the lens by take out the front and back lens group, and then spray it in on the aperture blades, and then give the aperture assembly a lot of movement now and then untill all the oil film has evaporate fully.

Would it hurt to clean the apature assembly as one big piece? Or is there an advantage to disassemble it?

I can see your point but in my opinion it's best to fully disassemble the aperture assembly, just to get all the blades clean and all the parts so there's no more oil left.
