Lip trills on the trumpet, how to practice?
Today I'll show you the first exercises to learn the lip trill. 👍
But is the term lip trill actually correct? Should you really tense and relax your lips quickly? Does the lower jaw move or does the tongue do it?
First things first, the tongue is responsible for it. 💡
1️⃣ So we have to train our tongue. As with binding, our tongue is used with the syllables e and i. You should first practice this movement dry, i.e. without a trumpet, and feel it or check with a mirror which part of the tongue is moving.
2️⃣ In the next step we transfer this movement to our instrument. Our natural tone bindings are fundamental. So we tie a few notes first. Not too deep, because the intervals would be too big there, we start with c2 via e2 to g2. We play these ties with a loop!
Help: If the natural tone binding does not work well for you, first train to drive and bend tones, i.e. connecting two natural tones in a glissando. Start on e2 and drive the sound to c2 in slow motion.
3️⃣ In today's last step we start with the lip trill, or rather the tongue trill.
My tip: start on c2 and trill between the notes e2 and g2. Think about a rhythm that you can use to clearly define for yourself when the trill begins and when it ends. To extend this exercise, you can lengthen your trill stretch and / or increase the tempo of your trill.
I'll show you a little jazzy exercise at the end of this video. You need the following notes for this exercise: g1 - b1 - c2 - d2 - f2
