Look up the libretto, there was a good version of the whole opera with subs a week ago, but Royal Opera House took it down. Correct me if I'm wrong but- that wasn't the reason? I mean, as far as I can remember, the Princess challenges the protagonist to answer three riddles or he will be executed, the guy answers them correctly, and THEN he challenges her back: either she guesses/finds out his name by sunrise, or she has to marry him.
