I got my blue, 7 seater about 18 months after you guys. I’ve only put 20K miles on mine. Knocking on wood now, mine’s been 100% perfect and it’s my favorite car I’ve ever had by far! I used to say it’s the best car I’ve ever driven until I test-drove an S the other day. 😬
Total cost of ownership is what should be important when comparing vehicles. To do that you have to factor in lots of things besides the cost of refueling and maintenance. Probably the biggest factor that comes into play will be residual value. I think Tesla will sink close to the bottom when compared to any Toyota or Honda over the longer term. If electric vehicles work for you, leasing is probably a better option.
But the latest expense, by far, of car ownership is fuel and maintenance. Everything else is periphery. I have a 6 year old Tesla, I rotate tires once a year and changed my tires after 58,000 miles. That’s it, no comparison in costs when compared to my Audi Q5 or Lexus GS350. There insurance is 1300 per year , $400 more than my Lexus or Audi, but they also 10 and 8 year cars. Also this fixation people have with replacing the battery. I’ve only lost 3% capacity, big deal ICE also lose mpg as they age. I also charge at home and leave with 280 miles in the morning never an issue. Plenty of super chargers if I want to go on long road trips, but I also have my Q5 and GS350. Honestly, Teslas are the easiest, least expensive cars to own if you can charge at home.
Then charging in my garage at home. We have super low electricity rates overnight in my area and I end up paying three cents per kilowatt hour. So if I were to charge the entire battery it would cost about two dollars. We rarely need to charge that much of the battery though. Plus, like you, we have solar panels on the roof so the actual cost is very close to zero.
Started watching videos 2 years ago, including yours, which was very helpful. Also, back in 2022 wait times were loooong, so we had plenty of time to stufy up on them. Currently, my wife and I have both had our teslas, MYP and MYLR for just over 1.5 years(July and Sept 2022). She has 39k on her LR and I have 31k on my MYP. Mostly highway miles.
I started watching your Tesla videos a couple of years ago and remember asking questions about the child car seats for the second and third rows… We ended up getting a 2023 Tesla model Y long range seven cedar at the very end of 2022. So far we have 37,000 miles on it and I am still on the original set of tires.I did have to get an alignment at about 30,000 miles because the tires were wearing unevenly.

I have a 2022 end of year but still have the sensors. I will say build quality in the latter year 2022, 2023 and 2024 out of Austin are much, much better. I was also in time for the upgraded suspension. So latter year 22, 23 and 24 have that. Tesla does have the best charging network. Hopefully them opening up to non Tesla vehicles will take the headache and range anxiety away from those owners. I'm still enjoying mine a little over a year later and it is my road trip vehicle. I haven't driven my gas car in months. The wife works from home primarily and uses that car to run errands and it's her commuter car when she need to go into the office a couple times a week. For the climate, I'm here in Virginia so just south of you. We don't always get as cold as you but one of the things hat help me since I park outside is using my car cover. I simply throw that on the day before and any ice build up or snow isn't an issue since it's all on the cover I then pull off of the car. Now the have it where you can open the door on the driver's side when it's cold and the handle might be frozen over. My state is definitely charging way to much for registration. They simply access my gas gar but don't know that we rarely drive it so I'm not going to the gas station like I used to before I bought an EV. I also work locally so I'm not even on the roads long enough to be have any sort of impact yet I pay 4 to 5 times more in registration fees than I do my gas car.
This is good info, I also live in VA and thinking to get this car as I only conmute to work. Is the insurance for 6 months higher than 1k USD? Thank you!
I would look into those more. From what I can see they are a discount tire and not rated for heavy load vehicles like EV’s. At least I can’t find any Assurance tires rated for heavy load.
@@LockettTech they replaced some sort of cheap screw with a more powerful screw. They did it when the side plastic part came apart on the side of the drivers seat.
I feel you guys on the tires issue. We have a VW ID.4 and got 22k out of our original set of tires. We switched to the Michelin Cross Climate 2's and although they are expensive they are a great all season which carries the 3peak snow rating, and they have a 60k mile warranty. Next time you're due for another set of tires, give them a look. we love them.
My only complaint after a year is body damage repair takes insanely long. A truck hit my Y parked and left the scene, luckily captured on Sentry but car has been in the shop 4.5 weeks now and I wasn’t able to get a Tesla rental. I cannot wait to get my car back!
Re the seven seater option and safety: I do like that those in the seat are facing forward in the Tesla, rather than the old way of the seat, facing backwards and inherent problems, resulting from being hit from behind, and those persons facing the impending collision.
So i thought model y was expensive and planning to get the new crv instead so i went to the honda website and tadah ill be paying almost the same plus gas and maintenance on top for the crv 😂 model y is in top my list now also i work for tesla so those little perks i get makes more sense im just alittle scared that it wont last 10 yrs atleast 🤔
Thank you for the detailed MY mileage milestones videos. I am two years in on my 2022 MY with just over 26k miles and other than road hazard and tire rotations maintenance has been low. The delivery day Tesla go backs and fix were annoying but enjoy the ease and wouldn’t go back to ice but would get an Rivian R1T if I bought another ev.
One of the most overlooked things in buying a Tesla is the delivery window. I had my test drive on June 5th of this year for the 2023/2024 model and I will be taking delivery on June 25th. My friend who ordered a Mercedes EQB will be waiting until december of this year.
@@LockettTech yes probably but it will still open the door even if it doesn’t drop the window an inch. It’s not good for it over a long haul but once in a while it’s fine.
Great video, as always!! Your earlier videos in 2021 helped me make the decision to go with the 7 seater for our 3 boys. My car is the primary car as well. Glad to see that you have as many miles as we do, ha! Agree with all of your points (especially those tires, ugh). Luckily, our oldest is driving now, so I don't have to drive all 3 as much. Our youngest is still able to fit in the 3rd row on long trips, but I'm with Michelle, next up is a Model X!! In purple!! :). Take care!!!
Model Y performance 22. So far I've got the original tires all the way up to about 34,000 mi. Right rear is starting to lose air slowly. Trying to see how long I can go without replacing it. No-ICE.
I appreciate your thorough review. The advice you give everyone I believe to be spot on and honest which I can't say of others on RUclips. I have a couple things to add to what you've provided here. I have a late 2022 Model Y 5 seat in white from Austin. First, the paint problems in white seem to be less susceptible to chipping. I also think the panel gap issue is more a thing of the past based on my car and from others I've spoken to. A lot of your negative observations are related to the 3rd row which I don't have, but I would not be happy if I had purchased it either. I've got 30K miles on my car with the original Continental tires. I expect to at least get 40K out of them. I didn't use chill mode, but saw early on how driving fast from stopping at traffic lights stop signs would eat tires. I notice you didn't mention any battery degradation. If you have or haven't had significant degradation that would have been useful to others. I'm also under 15 minutes from the Devon Service Center. Just curious, did you film this at Lake Galena? The lake looks very familiar. BTW, purple would rock. I saw one online that was metallic purple and gold. It was sweet. Things Tesla should do: 1) you are spot on: a gauge to show you how much washer fluid is left. 2) Improve the HVAC to be stronger. 3) Have a heater on the drivers side door handle for frozen weather events. 4) Raise the vented windows if it starts to rain. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience.
I actually have driven Electric since 2001 from building your garage to Chinese vehicles to Now. I drive a Kia NIRO EV which bang for the buck is worth every penny anyhow great video.
Re: phantom braking; My Y sees a green traffic light and slows in case the light may change to amber and red. Once we get close enough, it accelerates again.Re: safety; your government should mandate all those tests before allowing a car on the road and I am sure it has done so.
Instead of wrapping your car, consider having it sprayed. Check out dip your car. I think there are shops all over that do the spray dip. It peals off, just like a wrap. More colors and paint like effects.
Hey Ho! OP- first a dandy video! "Dad" has a fine camera presence. Now if you want good seating for real people AND quality and a NACS/CCS adapter; go look at the Kia EV09
I was supposed to buy a 24 model Y but I was afraid and bought a 25 crv hybrid I wish I seen your video before I purchased 😂o well I’ll probably trade in the crv in a year for it
If you want it stay in the Tesla family, would you think about the Cybertruck? With many EV brands going to NACS would that make is easier to consider other EV makers?
Great review! I have a Nissan Ariya (EV). and I want to change it for the Tesla. I'm having a number of issues with the Ariya. It's small, hard to find charging stations. As you said, when I got to charging stations other people are charging or its broken. I didn't install one at my house because I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep the Ariya. Next week I'm doing a test drive for the Model Y and Model 3. I'm excited.
I test drove the Ariya and quite liked it. It has a lot going for it, but for the price I’m probably going for something else. Later this year and in 2025 most manufactures will be coming out with cars that have NACS connectors. Might not be as seamless as the Tesla to Tesla super charger experience, but at least you’ll be able to use them.
Would you consider a Kia EV 9 or an ID Buzz with a NACS connectors next year? Those are two real 3 row vehicles. The Kia is easy to get, the Buzz will probably be a challenge.
I'm waiting for a major refresh for the model Y. I want the better suspension and most importantly I'm really hoping a better battery is developed and put in the new Y.
You were mentioning about the tires and how fast they wear because of the weight of the car. Your wife mentioned that she has changed the Tesla’s driving mode to “Chill” and feels that will make the difference. I believe she’s right. There’s another Tesla YTuber JGEEPS who has a Model Y and a Porsche Macan ICE car. He posted a FB video titled “10 Simple Tesla Maintenance Steps for Increased Efficiency” where he mentioned in the video that his Model Y and Macan both weigh the same. JGEEPS claimed that if you change the Model Y’s driving mode to chill owners should get “normal” amount of wear out of their tires. He does.
@@myaccount__7269 Zero to 60 in 7 seconds isn’t exactly slow. Yes the acceleration of a Tesla is incredible but that’s not the only reason people own a Tesla.
15 thousand mile tire change at 400 dollars per tire totalling 1600 hundred dollars. 5 oil changes during that 15 thousand miles at 50 dollars totalling 250 dollars. You also mentioned tire rotation every 10 thousand miles. You could have had a top of the line Lexus for the 70 thousand that you spent with its fit and finish, reliable all superb!
I own 2 Teslas at present. I can confirm it’s false economy owning a Tesla or expensive electric car, unless for the novelty. When you compare the gain in maintenance, fuel etc. The buying price high and insurance is still huge compared to ice vehicles of the same value, and the residual value is unbelievable high, especially now that there are many Tesla’s on the road. Get yours valued now you will be surprised as to what you get quoted for your next video. I was honestly considering selling but due to the bad residual value , I have lost all my equity/35%capital cash that I initially put down when we purchased in September 2022 and if I sell now I can’t even pay off my finance, that’s how bad the valuation is. I have never lost so much on any vehicle ever, all equity’s gone. Let’s be honest.
I have a 2019 M3 long range, its 4.5 years old and has almost 70k miles on it, I have had zero problems with it and do not plan on getting rid of it at this point. I paid $6k for FSD which was kind of a waste so far but hopefully it will be worth it in a year or so. I almost traded it in on a new Y but they low balled the crap out of me to the point I would have really paid for FSD even though they said it was a free transfer because they offered me at least $12k less then the car is actually worth. I figure from what they are selling similar used M3s on their website for which is around $30k give or take and they offered me $17.5k for mine. I was like no thank you! No way in hell I would sell it for $17k.
My 2019 Model 3 will give you a message that windshield wiper fluid is low. However, I notice it use wiper fluid more than my "ice" SUV (explorer). Maybe just because it tells me that it's low :)
Just a thought or being curious. So if tesla owners just depend on the accelerate pedal and dont press on the brake pedals to stop. Could this cause the car on rear not stop cuz they arent paying attention? Lol
Do you prefer matte over gloss on blue for your model y? I pickup my 2024 MYLR Friday and went with a gloss pod because I feel blue looks good with a gloss finish but I was highly debating matte but felt that would look better for black or gray. Also live in Philly so greetings!
In illinois instead of 151$ for registration now i have to register my tesla for 251$ which isnt too bad honestly but thats 100$ that the state is stealing from my pocket ontop of other taxes they are already taking from my paychecks.
I have Michelin pilot sports all seasons 2 on my model y. Love them, they are quiet, comfort, last long. Also make sure to get tire insurance. I got nails a couple of times
The best thing about my wife buying a Tesla Model Y is that since she has a home cleaning business her vehicle doesn't smell like cleaning products anymore, she puts all the used rags and cleaning products in the frunk. I never wanted to get into her horrible nissan rogue because of the strong cleaning product smell......plus she is supe happy not having a $400 gas bill a month. It's an absolutely fun vehicle 😃🔥👌

2024 model y LR AWD owner. First time EV driver and I have to say the build quality was actually not as bad as I feared.
Re the seven seater option and safety: I do like that those in the seat are facing forward in the Tesla, rather than the old way of the seat, facing backwards and inherent problems, resulting from being hit from behind, and those persons facing the impending collision.
Purple is the best color! Thats my favorite color 💜💜💜 great video! New sub!!
Same here, I’m between the crv the nx or the model y. But everything is gearing towards the Y… fingers crossed.
@@faithiegeffrard7815 correct specially with the tax credit and cheaper charging cost only the insurance and registration is kinda expensive tho
I tell my model y I love her every single day
Fantastic video!!! Honest review and I agree 100% of what you said.
One of the most overlooked things in buying a Tesla is the delivery window. I had my test drive on June 5th of this year for the 2023/2024 model and I will be taking delivery on June 25th. My friend who ordered a Mercedes EQB will be waiting until december of this year.
I absolutely love that purple! Do it!
I’m sure this has already been mentioned, but in the winter use the feature on the app to pop the drivers door open
Doesn't always work. If the handle is frozen good chance so are the windows.
@@LockettTech yes probably but it will still open the door even if it doesn’t drop the window an inch. It’s not good for it over a long haul but once in a while it’s fine.
What model are the Michelin tires?
Purple would be so striking. I have a matte green. It is nice having unique color.
Best unbiased Tesla owner review I have watched thus far! Thanks!!
Never mind on the battery degradation question. I see your other video covering this. Thanks,
My wife and I got a Model 3 LR in Ohio, and they charged us $400 the first year for tags. The second year was $300. My gas car was $70.
Outrage!
$775 tags for my friends '23 model Y 😅
Yea. I grabbed a 5 year tag right before that went into effect. Sadly it runs out in September and dreading this next registration tag.
My model 3 tells me when I need washer fluid so it’s weird your model y didn’t 🤔 maybe a bug?
Great video I would never buy one of these but great video. You guys look enthused over your purchase.
Not buy a Tesla or an EV?
I actually have driven Electric since 2001 from building your garage to Chinese vehicles to Now. I drive a Kia NIRO EV which bang for the buck is worth every penny anyhow great video.
Liked, subscribed and commented to see that purple model Y 😎😎 21:29
Texas has a $200 ev registration fee. Thanks for another great video!
I drove a tesla for the first time when I rented one on a trip.
I want one now. Tempted on trading in my honda for a model y. This video helped.
Thank you!
Re: phantom braking; My Y sees a green traffic light and slows in case the light may change to amber and red. Once we get close enough, it accelerates again.Re: safety; your government should mandate all those tests before allowing a car on the road and I am sure it has done so.
Just got the new 2024 Y, love it :) thanks for this review !! great information !! but purple ? ;) not so excited
Instead of wrapping your car, consider having it sprayed.
Check out dip your car.
I think there are shops all over that do the spray dip.
It peals off, just like a wrap. More colors and paint like effects.
I am considering purchasing a model Y. What kind of Michelin tires do you guys use?
I just drive an M3 Highland. Build quality is much improved.
Good to hear!
The price of innovation and always pushing the limit will ALWAYS be the immediate quality.
Hey Ho! OP- first a dandy video! "Dad" has a fine camera presence. Now if you want good seating for real people AND quality and a NACS/CCS adapter; go look at the Kia EV09
I would really love to know how is your battery holding up after 60K miles? Any degradation?
I got you…
How To Do Tesla's Battery Test | Our battery degraded HOW MUCH after 60K miles?!?!? 🤯 🤯 🤯
ruclips.net/video/l0ciH0gDOeA/видео.html
I was supposed to buy a 24 model Y but I was afraid and bought a 25 crv hybrid I wish I seen your video before I purchased 😂o well I’ll probably trade in the crv in a year for it
If you want it stay in the Tesla family, would you think about the Cybertruck? With many EV brands going to NACS would that make is easier to consider other EV makers?
We do have an early reservation for one. Made the night of the announcement.
i paid my Model Y 2021 year's DMV registration for 2024 for $725 and I'm here in San Diego, CA
It does tell you when the “Windshield washer fluid is low”! There’s when I know to add some to mine lol.
I've never seen it. I think this was an addition after the last big update in 2022.
I love the Ariya. Was a top pick for me last year but it always comes back to the available charge network!
Absolutely
I forgot the Tesla has dog mode. Ariya does not. I need that feature. I want to take my dog Riley when I do errands.
NACS will be standard charging port on all cars in the next year and ford just partnered with Tesla to share the Tesla network.
My registration renewal on my 20 model 3 in Arizona was $400
I'm waiting for a major refresh for the model Y. I want the better suspension and most importantly I'm really hoping a better battery is developed and put in the new Y.
good review nice job.
He does.
If I wanted a chill and slow car I would not have got the tesla
@@myaccount__7269 Zero to 60 in 7 seconds isn’t exactly slow. Yes the acceleration of a Tesla is incredible but that’s not the only reason people own a Tesla.
Purple would be fine!
Yes purple!!! 🙌🏻
True, but those are not as fun.
@@LockettTech That's why I recommend leasing one.
How much did they value it ?
Did you consider to keep the car for 10 years when buying? Just wondering as I usually keep my cars for long time. Thank you!
Model y juiniper waiting. Hindustan south. Nice vid.
I would love to see the model Y in Purple, you go girl!
How is paying the road tax in registration a "punishment?" Shouldn't ALL vehicles using the road pay the taxes that maintain the road?
My 2019 Model 3 will give you a message that windshield wiper fluid is low. However, I notice it use wiper fluid more than my "ice" SUV (explorer). Maybe just because it tells me that it's low :)
Our y has 42k miles on it and is still on the stock tires. Just had inspection done too. I just drive like a grandpa lol.
350 a year for registration? I wish we just paid 667 for our model Y registration renewal.
🤯
Just ordered my 2024 MYLR and should pick it up tomorrow!!!!
PURPLE! It’s my favorite color and the color of my screen MY. I have the blue in the real world. Also, go Washington Huskies (purple and gold)
Why don't you use Voice commands, press the right sphere on the steering wheel.
So many Tesla videos has some person standing on or in front of the car with their arms spread open, I don’t get it
Tesla love!
Exactly how many tires have you gone through??? Not clear in the video. $400 per tire?
2 full sets of 4 at about $350/tires.
Change the driving mode to “chill” and you might get the same longevity out of your tires as an ICE vehicle. (See my other post this date).
Just a thought or being curious. So if tesla owners just depend on the accelerate pedal and dont press on the brake pedals to stop. Could this cause the car on rear not stop cuz they arent paying attention? Lol
When you decelerate the brake light turns on just like if you hit the brake on a gas powered car.
Do you prefer matte over gloss on blue for your model y? I pickup my 2024 MYLR Friday and went with a gloss pod because I feel blue looks good with a gloss finish but I was highly debating matte but felt that would look better for black or gray. Also live in Philly so greetings!
I love the look of the matte better but we have learned that a matte finish traps dirt more and it harder to get off.
In illinois instead of 151$ for registration now i have to register my tesla for 251$ which isnt too bad honestly but thats 100$ that the state is stealing from my pocket ontop of other taxes they are already taking from my paychecks.
Bring on the purple🎉
Can you tell us more about your Michelin tires? What model are they?
I have Michelin pilot sports all seasons 2 on my model y. Love them, they are quiet, comfort, last long. Also make sure to get tire insurance. I got nails a couple of times
These are what we switched to. One of the only ones with a warranty.
