If your Windows machine restarts by itself installing an update, your IT manager/department is doing it's job BAD. I've used Windows laptops for work and there was no precedent of a random restart at any time. A 3rd party app's window pops up time to time that a restart will be needed, and you can just sneeze it for hours or set a time for the restart.

Further if updates can't be installed for any reason my IT dept will get on the phone with you, remote into the company computer and fix whatever is causing updates to not install. "we don't use the os itself"
arguably one of the most retarded thing's I've ever heard.
Nowadays, most people's computers are just bootloaders for google chrome and spotify so as long as they have their web apps and can get programme's it's usable and comfy for them.
Now to say something so retarded as "As simple as that" is really frustrating to hear.
The best OS, should have no government backdoors, no surveillance shit, should be able to run on low-end hardware, give users complete root access and be secure.
You do use the OS and programmes that the OS support, the best OS is not one that works for people, that's their preference and what they're used to.

    • @albussd
      @albussd 3 года назад +1

@@perhaps8250 My statements are not the most retarded thing anyone would ever hear (really? You don't hear and read much then). You could have been nice and simply instructive, enquiring. Yet you CHOSE a wrong approach to responding to a comment cos..hey..it's just on the internet, so our behaviour doesn't matter, right? Anyway...moving on commenting on your very obnoxious behaviour, I'll explain why I wrote what I wrote.
I wrote my short statement from the POV of users/customers. For any user, the best OS is the one that helps them get the work they intend to do. Now things like no govt backdoor, no surveillance, etc are extremely important and I agree 100% with that. Though from a user's POV, most of them don't know better than they do. They aren't informed about Windows/Linux like you and I are (we are minority). Like you wrote, they use what they started with and are used to using. That, however, is a different point than the "what works is what's deemed best" idea. Would we like the users to be more free? Sure. Though practically it doesn't pan out that way cos of many factors.
Instead of being unnecessarily frustrated and idiotically loading the results of your emotional instability onto someone else with knee-jerk reactions, consider doing something as simple as asking questions..getting contexts, clarifications, etc. Also, something else you should know - never use the word "retard" again like you do. It doesn't mean what many ignorant people think it does. It's got its roots in developmental biology and using the word in wrong ways is insulting to those who suffer from it.

As a relatively tech savvy Windows User I used Linux on my first DIY Desktop PC back in the summer of 2019. Originally it was a cost cutting measure, plus I also wanted to try something new. I still use a W10 laptop, a ThinkPad E570, as my couch browser/typewriter, but I plan to eventually put Linux on it once support for W10 ends. For home-use I think Linux is a great alternative, but it is not for the timid. It has a relatively steep learning curve, but after the first month, sticking through and working out my own mistakes, I don't think I'll ever go back to Windows for my gaming and media server needs. Maybe if a future workplace requires Windows or Mac, then I'll get a laptop from work, but for my own home-use I'll be sticking with Linux.

Appreciate your perspective on this, Chris. Thanks to your work, I’ve been inspired to switch over my gaming rig to Linux, really enjoying the customization and tinkering aspect of things and the sort of “daring” or almost “taboo” nature of getting all my favorite games running in a non-Windows box. While I appreciate your perspective on Mac and don’t think it’s necessarily wrong, I might also suggest another-I’m using well-aged hardware in the Mac ecosystem and enjoying a longevity rivaled only by Linux. My desktop workhorse is a second-hand 2010 Mac Pro which runs Mojave (my favorite version of MacOS), and compared to most standard consumer setups my nearly 12 year old hardware still kicks butt. My mobile setup is a 2013 MacBook Pro also running Mojave, and again compared to what most folks are using for general productivity, the machine works like it did on day one. And while I agree the average consumer might only look as far as the App Store, the open source community is vast and vibrant on MacOS and easy to find. Again, totally not bashing your perspective, but I think there’s something to be said for the longevity and real utility some users get out of their Macs not because they’re millionaires but because in certain moments Apple has just gotten really right in terms of the synergy between hardware, software, and building tools that are built to last. Obviously, they’ve spent a fair amount of time not getting one or all of those aspects right, but when they do nail it, it’s an impressive feat. Thank you for your work!

Got about as far as using nano editor via CMD to load the ISO Boot.cfg files that need to be edited, but couldn't get past changing file permissions on ISO files if that's even possible. Looking for alternative OS to play around in now.

I do not use a lot of what Windows offers as well but need to run it since that is what I am given to use. One of the things I like about this video is that a lot of tech folks online seem to be diehard Linux advocates. Linux is the ONE operating system for everyone in ALL circumstances... which really gets tiring. I agree Linux has its strong points, but most of those strong points can only be utilized if you're going to dig in a lot more than most people are going to do. And for most of us if you want Linux to get along with work,... well, you're likely going to have more problems than it's worth. Windows is the big guy... doesn't make it better in all ways by any means, but it's everywhere. I've never gotten into Mac much. I do know that it has its advantages too, but it's also the most expensive. One of the big frustrations with Mac is getting a VM of Mac working on Windows... I think I finally got one working about a year ago, but I never really did much with it anyway. It'd probably be better to have Mac on its own machine. Question... can you download an ISO of a Mac operating system and install it on any old PC?

I use Linux for most tasks, but I have Windows for the odd applications where I cant run on Linux.

I installed Ubuntu with Gnome to get accustomed with mainstream Linux desktop. I have to say I expected something a little more polished. I mean there are a lot of cool features there, but I see bugs and limitations while trying to do basic things.
Yesterday I pulled out my good old T420 and found that VPN that always worked - won't- and I could quickly set it up on Windows but not anymore on Ubuntu. Update would not work due to broken index. So I will be installing fresh, I guess.
Still, there is no replacement for not being spied upon all the time. That is why I would pay for linux desktop distro that just works every time.

One thing you forgot that I think is important that favours windows. Hardware support and a wider list applications, especially obscure ones, in particular for professionals. For example zero pro audio interfaces with compete drivers, even Mac has that.Linux doesn't, just USB compliant ones, but that is very limited, and companies have no interest to support such devices on Linux either.
and well said in conclusion :)

Yeah there’s no bias here in the comments. Lol. Let’s be real - highly productive independent creative professionals don’t have time to tinker with their operating systems and hardware. Time, smooth flow, and easy system migrations quickly become much more valuable than the up-front cost of hardware and software once there’s a backlog of new work. For this and many other reasons, Windows is often a terrible and cruel joke and the creative professionals who must use it should be blessed - as they shall inherit the Earth. And although it’s getting closer for sure (thanks to the efforts of many incredible open-source contributors), Linux just has too many gaps and inconsistencies as a high productivity desktop environment for independent creative professionals’ workflows. Only places I’ve seen Linux in professional creative workflows is in mid-to-big budget environments with dedicated IT teams who setup and support proprietary Linux based environments and workflows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

these days i feel like we shouldn't treat linux like single operating system but rather as a family of operating systems
sure it runs the same programs but the ui/ux, workflow, aim, target demographic and support are just.....different
take elementaryos for example, its not made to be very configurable and as a result is very consistent
or something like ubuntu touch which offers image based updates and simply doesn't allow you to mess with the rootfs out of the box, making it easier to provide support
compare that with gentoo where you can do what you want, and as a result it is probably the most inconsistent out of them all. point in case: ChromeOS is gentoo linux :3
