This is more of the content that I’ve been waiting for from SDSC. Since I have discovered shallots a few years ago, they have not disappointed. They are so subtle, yet so flavorful in many dishes. Thanks, Brigette!!

I can't wait! I am adding these to my garden. I love that we can use the greens as well. Thanks!

@@earthsystem i feel they do. I don't have any onions, they went to mush a couple months ago even though i cured them thoroughly. I do still have have a few shallots. Maybe it's the variety I grow, matador'. I'm in zone 4.

If you end up with more than you can use, you can put them in the dehydrator, break them up or grind them for powder. They actually keep for a while in the house if kept in the right environment. I dehydrate anything that gets limp or soft so I can use it later on.

What shallot grows well in SD? I was only able to find the Zebrune but it's a shallot/onion hybrid.

I love cooking with shallots. Can they be grown in a container?

I’m in zone 9B and had seeds. Zero luck in getting a single seed to germinate on 2 different tries! I will try again.

What’s the difference between shallots and Cipollini onions? I’m considering switching to cipollini as I’m not having success with onions in 10a Florida. It’s an important crop and perennial onions or multiplying onions just don’t yield like the potential of seeds.

Cipollini are sweeter, Shallots are garlicky-er (that's a word.)

They don't taste like garlic but I use them just like garlic to add a 5-star layer of flavor to my savory dishes...
