Rickie Lee was told by Tom Waits, her old boyfriend, that their mutual friend Chuck E (Weiss) was in love. This album won her the 1980 (corrected) best new artist Grammy. For a different side of her see her song "Last Chance Texaco" from the same album. Her career got a boost when Lowell George from Little Feat used her song "Easy Money" on his solo album.

Born in Chicago, grew up in Phoenix Arizona, Rickie Lee is known for this song by people who have never listened to her albums - once you hear her albums it's like a revelation that you never really recover from (in a good way). This was her first single from her first album in 1979.
Her albums always charted well - her first two albums were in the top ten in several countries including the US.
Classy music made by a classy artist !!
Woody and Dutch on the Slow Train to Peking is one of many great tracks (it's from her second album Pirates).

RLJ is one of the best singer songwriters ever. Really. Highly underestimated. She has a slew of albums, each as good as the other. She started off in the late 70s, and now lives and works in New Orleans. She’s the shit, no doubt.

I just saw Rickie Lee live about 3 years ago.
70 years old now, and she's still performing and writing new music.
    She's amazing.
She does a great cover of a Jimi Hendrix song, "Up From the Skies", that's a delight, along with a full catalog of gems she's written herself.

As a songwriter RLJ had always carved out her own space. A deeply unique artist who is a
veteran eccentric. Longtime fan. I 'd suggest you give "We Belong Together" a listen. "Chuck-E..." was first hit & most probably her biggest. But her voice is a gift to the world of music.

Song is from 1979. She's from L.A. A fantastic singer and songwriter with a dozen or so albums under her belt. Still touring. Back in the day, she put on a couple of the best concerts I ever saw. So, Chuck E. is an old friend who hasn't been hanging out lately. She's wondering what's going on and decides he must be in love. So who is she? What's her name? But, she finally figures out that Chuck E. is "in love with the little girl who's singing this song". This was her only hit single (first song on her first album). She pulled in enough fans to keep her career going to this day, but everything, especially her first half dozen albums, are awesome. A good next step would be "We Belong Together".

I LOVE this question. Even then, everyone asked what is the genre? Rickie Lee is the genre. You are right, and this iconic song made a pathway for so much that followed. Not just stylistically but...spiritually. She defied the winds of the time and did her own "me" in the polyester years of disco. what insightful comments about her singing style - she was indecipherable, singing words and sounds rhythmically instead of articulating the word. too bad, her lyrics are funny and bright. She makes you come in close... and that create an intimacy right off.
It was spring of 1979 when this song came out. She was on the cover of Rolling Stone a few months later - she was a phenomenon. Perhaps the first female singer songwriter Pop star. Bruce was probably the first male - a rock star for the new decade. She also was kind of sexy, and that was a new concept for singer songwrtiers. Rickie would be the mother of the jazzy-pop women who followed - voices like Suzanne Vega, Tory Amos, Jewel, Sheryl Crow all owe a debt to the RLj record they wore out. As far as the chronology, Chuck E's in Love was first, Chuck E Cheese followed, and all the other Chucky's, evil or otherwise, that became popular in the 80's. Even the spelling of the song was pick up - the clever Tone E and joe E of the 1980's. Rickie Lee Jones' 2022 memoir was voted the Best (music) Book of the year, according to MOJO and afew other publications. .It's so good to see this music being discovered. I hope it ends up on a tv show or covered by someone soon. It's very odd that people don't know Rickie Lee Jones.

A good debut album for her. This was radio played standard, but that doesn't take away from it cool & funny. And yes Danny's All Star Joint is probably the best song, but there's a real excellent video of a House episode to the tune of On a Saturday Afternoon in 1963. Almost heartbreaking. Rikki is definitely a 70's "beat" as in beatnik, artist.

This came out when I was in middle school (late 70s) and I thought she was the coolest thing ever. Her second album, Pirates, was even better. She released a great song of standards called Pop Pop that was unlike any album of standards you're ever going to hear, produced IIRC by Don Was. I always thought she had to be a junkie, but maybe she was just the patron saint of junkies or something. Anyhow, she's great (and a great songwriter, too) and I'm sad now that I hadn't listened to her in so long.

I remember sometime late 80s to early 90s Rolling Stone (back when they were still a music mag) doing a short 60s vs. 70s vs. 80s half page table. One of the items on the list was: "The girl with a beret," and the 60s girl was Joni Mitchel, the 70s' was Rickie Lee, and Eddie Brickel was for the 80s. The only other item on the list that I remember was "Walking death," because Keith Richard was the entry for the three decades. 🙂 [although, in truth, in the 60s KR was still baby-faced]
