This was beyond radio-friendly. It was a radio marriage. Haven't heard it in ages, yet I still remember all the lyrics. Music can do that. Makes you feel smarter than you really are :)

Time magazine dubbed Rickie Lee Jones "The Duchess of Coolsville" in a review of her first professional show in 1979. Her appearance on Saturday Night Live on April 7, 1979, one month after her debut record was released, sparked an overnight sensation. She performed "Chuck E.'s in Love" and "Coolsville" on the show.

I absolutely love Ricki Lee. Still would love to hear you listen to her singing " Down at Danny's All Star Joint " . Talk about fabulous lyrics and fun, fun, to listen to....deep allegorical songs too.

I’d be pretty confident to say that who has this album loves it. Some are sure-fire attention grabbers like this and Danny’s All-Star Joint and Weasel & The White Boys Cool and Coolsville. Others are more subtle and sublime, but it’s a quality package, no doubt about it.

We all loved this tune even though initially we didn’t understand it and most of the lyrics. VERY unique at the time for radio play. She came along and was the bohemian Joni Mitchell for most of us.

Unmistakable opening notes, that voice, the cleverness of the lyrics, and the little plot twist at the end, yes this was a popular one. I still laugh at the line "whatever it is he's got up his......sleeve......I hope it isn't contagious."

Daniel, we older cats don’t think of “Chuck E Cheese” when hearing this because that establishment wasn’t around at the time the song was released. But, I can understand why people hearing it, or seeing the title, for the first time might go there.

I have similar memories, but between 5th & 6th grade, and I was just discovering my “own” music, and not whatever the rest of the family was listening to. I bought (and still have) the 45. Whenever I think of “Chuck E” I also remember her follow up song “Youngblood”, and hearing that for the first time on WBZ when we were driving to Cape Cod for vacation that August. I liked that song too, but it was nowhere near as popular.

I highly recommend her album "Flying Cowboys" which was produced by Steely Dan's Walter Becker. Love it from start to finish. The single 'Satellites' was pop heaven but still very Rickie Lee Jones.
You Tube has an interview with her by Arsenio Hall, she's actually shy.

Back in the early seventies when Rickie Lee Jones and. Tom Waits were living in downtown L.A., playing dive bars, blaming their alcoholism on the piano and dallying with heroin, they were friends with local musician Chuck E. Weiss (and the Goddamn Liars), who never achieved breakout fame, but is immortalized in this song. Saw Ms. Jones perform at an intimate club in Hollywood late 90s with a crack band, and she was more orange day-glo shag carpeting with avocado drapes mesmerizing than ever...:)

  • @chris...9497

Rickie was a compatriot of Tom Waits. You should look into Tom's early works: "Martha", "Grapefruit Moon", "Ol' 55" (covered by the Eagles), "Step Right Up", "The Piano Has Been Drinking", etc.

Rickie - the epitome of Urban Cool. I've seen her live a couple of times over the years, including in the early years. Once in a bar, with loud people chatting in the back. Rickie stopped and said if you're hear to listen to me, shut up. Otherwise go someplace else. Love her!

Recently played a concert with an old singer-friend who LOVES Rickie Lee Jones and we performed this song-- which was musically unique on pop-radio in the old days when lyric-analysis was very secondary (thank God and LOL) to musical content. Missing in this review is the fact that all the verse-melodies are improvised and a look at the leadsheet (try that) will show that the verses really aren't melodies but more "spoken-word" in a very affected (and somewhat annoying perhaps) accent of sorts. To us old-timers, this song of course is nothing new and as pop/jazz performers in cover-bands, we had quite our fill of it, while appreciating the novelty of a basically jazz/blues/shuffle, with an all-improvised verse-melody and some serious jazz-chords, becoming a huge pop-hit!

She's so much more than Chuck E and Danny's All-Star Joint, the only other song I see suggested here so far.
"Woody and Dutch on the Slow Train to Peking" "Weasel and the White Boys Cool" "The Real End" "Juke Box Fury" and many more.
On a related note, try Maria Muldaur "It Ain't the Meat, It's the Motion." Early 70s era from New Orleans. Very tasty track.

Not that this is why I suggest this, but Johnny Depp comes out at the end. Any of his songs are better than most of the crap you have to watch for this channel. I hope you research him.
