Zero depth vaginoplasty

Zero depth vaginoplasty is creation of the external genitalia (clitoris, labia majora and minora) without a vaginal canal. The procedure takes about 4-6 hours in the operating room. Orchiectomy can be performed prior or at time of zero depth vaginoplasty. Patients are on bedrest overnight and are able to walk around the hospital the day after surgery. Patients are typically discharged home post op day 2 or 3 following surgery and will go home with a catheter in place to drain the bladder. Patients will come in for a post operative visit 7-10 days after surgery for wound check and catheter removal. If incisions are healing well at that time, patients typically return a month later, then 3 months later, then annually. No permanent hair removal of genital tissue is required prior to surgery and no dilation is required as no vaginal vault is created. Showering can occur 48 hours following surgery (no submerging in baths until incisions are healed). All skin sutures will dissolve. Anticipate recovery taking about 3 months until feeling at baseline.
