I actually am a fan of musk notes. It definitely can be confusing because there's a lot of different types of musk.
This is what I pulled from Google: Musk is a common perfume note that has a warm, sensual, and skin-like scent. It can be powdery, sweet, woodsy, earthy, fruity, or floral, depending on what it's blended with. Musk is often used as a base note to add long-lasting allure to fragrances. It can also be used as a star ingredient to make a fragrance feel warm, intimate, and sensual.
I vote for more Bonnie rants. Also remember Elaine Benes: "That means whatever the hell you want it to mean!" 😂

I respectfully disagree. Musk is distinct to me and helpful in the description. It’s an airy aromatic note. It’s deepens, adds a sophistication, and brings a complexity and maturity to me. It also has an alluring quality to it. The adjective before it usually is a note added to the musk. For instance it could be a sweet, fruity, smooth, woody, and solar aromatic deepness. My favorite and strongest musk notes of BBW is in Moonllit Marini and Prismatic Stars. I used to hate musk because it made me think of cashmere note which I don’t like but that is only one form of muskiness?

@@faye33ful Oops I meant Moonlit Martini lol. It was out the early part of last fall. It smells very similar to Thomas Kosmala no. 4 Neon. It is definitely in my top 5 fave BBW scents

Do you guys remember "Skin' by Bonnie Bell? The OIL.. so it's not near what it used to be but I swear I wore it in middle school and I found it again and every time I wear it I get stopped what are you wearing you smell delicious blah blah blah blah and it's just a little bit of oil on a couple little pulse points and it mixes beautifully so I don't know what the hell is in it either. LOL sometimes it smells like Play-Doh on some people but I don't know what's in it either

While I agree that Bath & Body Wrks isn't clear with their (over)use of musk, I also tend to love musk! so anytime I see it in a fragrance it makes me want to try it.

If you sniffed the old Jovan musk and White Musk...and Coty Musk ...and Avon Soft Musk. Musk was a very soft but perfumy scent...the new BBW Musk 3 is one of those kind of scents...as well as the Unstoppable. You smell it but it is almost an ethereal thing like it is more like a whisper instead of a loud perfume scent. I call it a resinous comforting type of scent.
I love musk. The new musk scent that’s out with the Apple and lavender is so nice. I love the coziness of musk.

When I think of a musk that works really well (at least to me), I usually think Dark Kiss's plum musk specifically. Which doesn't really smell like plums to me, but definitely carries that powdery warmth that I associate with the word and the scent I've conjured up in my head. It's not always a good thing (honestly I find most musk scents overwhelming and cloying, to the point where they completely overshadow the other notes), but sometimes it can elevate a fruit-floral into something surprisingly complex and deep.
Honestly, BaBW are the kings and queens of nonsense note-naming and always have been. A drop of strawberry nectar, like, a single drop in every bottle? Sparkling berries as in... what, exactly, covered in sugar and held up directly to the sun? That can't be, we already have sugared red berries! And what even are crystal peonies? Are they different from peony blooms?
I've always regarded this sort of thing as extra fluff on top of regular notes to not only make it more appealing to consumers (would you rather have amber or gilded amber?) but also to confuse us in a way that forces us to sniff absolutely everything, even things we've sniffed before, because we can't trust our own judgements if the notes themselves don't make any sense.
I am VERY leery of scents with musk. With very few exceptions (which seems to be if coconut is involved, interestingly), any scent with musk in it dries down to ONLY musk on my skin. And I hate the way it smells on me. I actually appreciate when B&BW uses musk as a scent note on the bottle because then I know not to get too excited about a scent and to definitely wait for the dry down before I get attached. What drives me crazy about B&BW is when they use scent notes that either aren't real things (looking at you, cali daze) or things that don't usually have a smell - like ice or wind. And they really need to give us all the notes, not just 3. There are obviously mists that have scents you can clearly smell that aren't listed and it's annoying. There's my rant. 🤣
I agree with wanting all the scent notes, and I hate when they use descriptions that aren't real or have no scent, either!
The most musky scent I ever liked and was sooo sad when they discontinued it was “cashmere glow” which has cashmere musk in it. I’d love to see them bring that back for a SAS one day. I got lots of compliments with that one.

Yes! I could be wrong but I think the musk note is what mostly gives a scent whatever longevity it may have and the descriptive word before musk in the notes is a light drop they add to alter the musk.

Musk used in the perfume industry originally was obtained from animals (deer, rat). Now it's illegal.
I feel like Bath and Body Works scent notes are not consistent throughout their fragrances. Look at all of the repackages with totally different scent notes.
Also, I feel that that the musk note varies by fragrance house. Within some fragrance houses the musk note smells the same (thinking Prada here.) When I see the word "musk" on a Prada perfume, I know what I'm getting.

I feel like it is the one scent note in the fragrance that, when warmed up on the skin, becomes the most pronounced.
It is like a warmth within a scent note, and that scent note can be a wide range of any one descriptive undertone really from anything; floral, woods, herbs, fruits, cotton, leather, food, champagne etc. The possibilities are endless.

The new Musk DOES smell like Book Loft and both are dupes for Diptique L'eau Papier. That's why they're so good. Lol. High end Parisian fragrance. I own it.

I am a BBW online shopper and when I see the scent note MUSK I immediately run screaming from my computer. I am not ever going to blindly purchase any scent with musk. I am the type of person that when I buy a fruity scent then that is what I want. Stop throwing in these horrible surprises. The same with my foodie scents no extras please!!!!! I find myself buying less and less body care because of the added scents or I stick to my for sure go to scents that I know are safe. I remember BBW scents in the 90's were so much more simple and if was a fruity scent then it was just that fruity... I have often left reviews with this very complaint. So Miss Bonnie Keep on Ranting!!! I Love It!!!!!

I actually realized that I love musk scents so I enjoy BBW musk. For some reason even if the scent is very floral my nose picks up the warm sweet musk
I didn't think I would like the musk ( luxury collection) at all. I gave it a little spray on my wrist and let it sit for about 10 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised. Which I know musk is one of those scents that is different on everyone .

Hi Bonnie! Rant away with BBW. I have been shopping on and off at BBW since the early 2000's and I have to say I miss seeing the longer scent notes like with such classics like Twilight Woods which actually does not list "musk" which is odd as I feel like Twilight Woods is more on the perfume spectrum. With Into The Night I can see the coffee note as coffee can at times smell sweet. Sandalwood notes come off as sweet as well which is why the word, "Musk" is used. Just my guess. Sadly, I feel like BBW uses somewhat of a "formula" with describing fragrances they release. They are so vague and hilarious. The scent note, "Musk" is indeed used with perfumes/fragrances. I'm not a perfumer or chemist, but this is why I find fragrances so interesting. It's how I think of wines. There is a real science behind wine making and this is how I think of fragrances. It's a science. Yes, I'm HUGE nerd LOL It would be interesting to hear an answer from a fragrance creator from BBW to explain why "Musk" is used a lot in BBW's descriptions.

To be honest Bonnie this is the first time I totally agree with you!!!! I hate musk🤢🤮, but the new “Musk” scent on the dry down doesn’t smell bad!!! It stinks to be damned when you first spray it but later on like 20 mins. later…it’s okay!!👍🏾

Have you ever smelled your own clean, sun-warmed skin that is slightly dampened with sweat (not BO). Perhaps you applied some unscented lotion a few hours ago that's had lots of time to soak in? Your skin was then heated by activity or the sun and you get a slightly earthy, clean scent? That skin-scent is musk. If you were to amplify that ten times, that is what musk adds to a fragrance. I love musk when it's paired with a harmonious blend of other notes, but often it is not.
The new B&BW "Musk" is a fairly true, unobstructed musk without florals or sugary sweetness. The rice milk and mimosa enhance the musk rather than cause the musk to go sour & weird as it often does when too many florals are used in conjunction musk. Replica Springtime in a Park is one such example of musk gone wrong imo.
The designer house Narciso Rodriguez make my favorite musks. They've perfected it and use it in all of their fragrances. Musk is what they do. All of their fragrances are a great case study on the note and how it can be done really well. The original EDT "For Her" in the black bottle is my favorite, but they've done everything from candied powdered musk to frangipani musk. I highly recommended getting your nose on a NR fragrance sometime if you can, if for no other reason than to experience a superbly-done musk! They have musk for just about every preference.
As for B&BW, if they're going continue using musk in their scents (which, they most likely will), I do think it's important they keep it in their notes lists given the specific nature of musk. But, they should just call it "musk" and stop trying to make it less intimidating or something it isn't by adding unhelpful extra adjectives. Musk is musk and it can be manipulated depending on how it's paired, but that is true of most fragrance notes. I think it's important we get full note breakdowns. That would be more helpful than silly descriptors like, "Sugared Musk," "cloudy Musk," etc. A full note breakdown would help us decipher what we're getting when buying online, whether musk is included or not. 😊
I do understand how musk can be perplexing, but it's an important base note for better or worse. I personally could do with less musk in the base of B&BW products and more vanilla, tonka, resins, and patchouli. ❤

I think you’re complicating it honestly lol. Musk definitely is a specific type of scent, even though it’s hard to describe. It’s kind of like a warm, sweet, natural, fuzzy aroma. And it’s historically been used in fragrances forever, so I don’t think it’s something BBW should stop using or naming. I can understand some people may not like it so they might get scared away, but depending on what other notes it’s mixed with it can take on different characteristics, so even if you don’t like one fragrance with musk, you may like another.
Well said!! I agree, it's not just a word that means nothing. It IS a scent note, that done right or wrong, affects the final outcome pretty much. It's not overusing the word. We just need to come to understand that it isn't always bad or always good. People are too afraid of musk. But if it doesn't usually work on your skin, that's a good thing to know upfront in the scent notes. Musk is one of the additives that can make a fragrance last longer and have depth, which some of us really want out of BBW scents. They don't usually last very long, so this helps.

Bonnie, I can't speak to all the B&BW scents that have musk in the description or even the newest Musk scent (looking forward to smelling it, though). However, I am a longtime musk lover. It just seems to work better than anything else with my body chemistry. If it helps you at all in pinning down what an "ideal" musk (at least to me) smells like... do you remember Jovan Musk from the 70s and 80s? That was one of my first loves. I'm also a huge fan of Philosophy's original Amazing Grace. My absolute favorite, though, is Egyptian Musk. There are many varieties of this out there, some better than others. My all-time favorite is sadly no longer available... it was a thick perfume oil made by a company called Body Time (they were originally The Body Shop but sold the name at some point). They're no longer in business now, so I'm rationing the last half bottle I own.

I enjoyed your rant, Bonnie, because I feel that way about SO many scent descriptions at BBW. You can say the same thing about whatever scent note you can think of. They just add an adjective to make it sound better, Vanilla has a million descriptions to it, Petals (which flowers?, can we be a little more specific??), Berries, esp the vague ones like air and cotton and water and other things that don't have a real scent by themselves. I DO appreciate and want them to continue to list the major scent notes tho INCLUDING musk, because I am learning to discern that way. I used to think I didn't like musk and was scared of it, because sometimes it's overdone or just done wrong. But done right, it adds a depth to the fragrance esp in the drydown, that lingers on the skin and is very attractive. It's a background scent, that adds to whatever they put with it. I think the adjectives in front of the notes sometimes are ways for them to add in the other scents that are present, but sometimes they are just to make the product sound better. I often discount the adjective and hone in on the scents without the adjective to tell me--for example rose, vanilla and musk or orange, jasmine and neroli. Mocha musk tells me it will have a chocolate/coffee flavor to the musk--probably a darker musk; airy or clean means light to me. I did recently rediscover Jovan Musk spray, and LOVE it. I also LOVE Getaway Soiree though--I get vibes of Sol de Janiero Brazillan Crush Cheirosa 62 even though the scent notes are not the same at all, but it is the same color.

Musk is a secondary sexual characteristic, and is the secretion of the pheromone androstenol in the sweat. In actual fact most people will not even notice the smell of this especially with the modern practice of showering every day. It has been described as a sweet smell and may make a man more approachable by a woman.
This should not be confused with androstenone, which is a different compound but is often thought of as “musk odour” because it is much more noticeable. It is secreted by both men and women, and also animals such as pigs.
Both of these pheromones will have stronger smells when they are being broken down by the action of bacteria on the skin, and this can also be mistaken for “musk odor”.
I used to love Jovan Musk Oil in my 9th grade year. I'm not even sure if it's still made. It was wonderful. It was in department😢@stores

Vanilla bean noel is a foodie with musk but I feel way it's in the background. Normally musk is an instant migraine for me if it's too strong. I also recently found out that synthetic musk doesn't break down and disrupts hormones. Real musk is illegal as it should be.
I'm a child of the 60's and 70's. I didn't like the musk. Rumor has it that it blocks the smell of pot😂 I smelled it on other people and it made me sick lol😅

Agree! The word Musk is doesn’t really describe the scent! Very elusive and vague. Until you looked it up, it does have a broad range from powdery to floral to Woody. Whenever I try to blind buy a fragrance with the scent note “musk” I am 50/50 if I’m gonna like because I have no idea what type of personality of musk they’re referring too lol. I do have to agree. Love the new musk scent that they release, it is wonderful, and reminds me of snowflakes and cashmere. Very warm and delicate.
I remember the nostalgic Coty Wild Musk oil of the 70s and Avon Soft Musk (LOVED that one!). Whenever I consider Musk, I often envision that warm, slightly sweet "skin" fragrance. 😍 So that's the smell I often erroneously expect! Lol

I got my Musk FFM that I ordered online today and it’s going back to the store I did not like that one at all!!! Love the Apple 🍏 and Lavender 💜 though.
Another one I absolutely loved and miss was Avon's Peach Soft Musk, released in the early 2000s. It was never too "peachy", but soft and brings back many beautiful memories. Speaking of memories, I associate fragrances with memories so often that I cannot wear certain ones if there's even a hint of bad memories attached to it, no matter how good it may smell.

The original musk was from the gland of the musk deer now it's artificially made. But than there is always Elon Musk but that's a whole other story

I used to hate and avoid musk til I got to know it. I don’t like when a fragrance has just “musk” as the note. It has to be a sweet musk or powdery musk or fruity musk. I don’t like just plain musk. Like the one in Musk 3. Not my favorite. But I absolutely LOVE If You Musk an airy musk. If that makes sense. 😊
I typically like musks. I do not like the It's a Musk (smells like paper), I didn't buy musk because I didn't like it when I smelled it in the store so I was confused as typically like this mystery scent
I just saw 2 fragrance reviewers who both said If You Musk is a dupe for Dossier You and discontinued BBW Kaleidoscope. SimplyShaunessy and also Ksenja both said it. Sorry if you did mention this and I forgot-I forget a lot! ;)
I have always liked musk scents. It really depends on what it’s blended with for me to like a musk scent. The new musk and if you musk are not for me unfortunately. I liked first sight and gingham unstoppable that have musk in them.
Underwater Oasis has blue musk and Ivory Cashmere has silver musk. What on earth are these musks ? 😂 I absolutely agree with you that MUSK is way overused. White Musk from the Body Shop, to me is the original Musk. It smells a bit soapy but it's straight forward.
I love it! Musk is a "skin" scent. You but better. Yes they could come up with some other words because this obviously turns some people off. They could just use fresh, or clean.
I hate shopping on line for anything with smells bc of this reason right here that ur stating.. although I am attracted to the word musk bc most are weird but there also a lot that are addictive the ones I have with it in it I think it gives it a warmth to the scent which i love in my scents

I smelled the new Musk in the store and I could barely smell anything. So I didn’t buy it.

You have to wear it and the warmth from your body will allow you to smell your scent. I imagine it smells different on everybody. I cannot describe what it smells like on me other than very clean smelling.

My favorite musk is Umderwater Oasis, which got Blue Musk in it, considering it has a watery undertone.

The Musk one smells like an old scent that was around with Juniper Breeze and Plumeria. It was a rice flower scent that had a "play dough" quality. When I smelled this Musk, I remembered the rice flower one. I wish they would bring back Paris Amour for Spring, and I prefer gourmands. Great rant :)
