I'm a digital artist who makes intensive use of my iPad for both 2D and 3D art and due to the release of the new 2024 iPad Pro's I was able to get a 2022 12'9 inch iPad pro with 2TB storage and 16 GB RAM for a huge discount. I need a lot of RAM for the detailed 3D projects I'm doing and I really prefer a big canvas, because honestly 11 inch is a little crammy when you're doing art. It's less than A4 😅 You don't always need the newest model. I'm pretty sure this iPad will last me MANY years.
I have 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 M1 5G. I find that the battery health is nearing 70%. So should I replace the battery or just get the new M4? But buying the new magic keyboard + pencil pro can be quite costly. Replace old with new battery but my concern is: how long can M1 catch up with the future iPadOS updates?

Instead of buying “the latest shiny thing” I always consider if a replacement is actually required. I have to talk myself into upgrading and if there’s enough justification I go through each model seeing which offers the best return on investment and future proofing. The equipment needs to be fit for purpose with a bit of room for expansion. Only now am I replacing our 2017 MacBook Pro with a 2024 M4 Pro. I was looking at the Air, but by the time you spec it up you’re in Pro territory. It’s not top spec because it’s not required but enough to see us for 3-4 years. The last one was an i5 that saw 7 years and will now be gifted to a family member.
Nice, sounds like the right way to do things for sure. We should all be a bit more conscientious when purchasing tech that’s going to just sit in a land fill eventually
M4 11” user. Adore this thing. Bought as a backup to my 16” MBP, and it’s taken over in 80% of use cases. Excellent until you need a particular software, then the Mac comes back out. Will be getting an M4 Pro 14” MBP mid-November, which i can’t wait for!
Thanks for the content. I agree the M2 Pro is a great deal and especially for those that travel a lot (or in my case if you live in Europe) as you also get the sim tray (aren't the new iPads e-Sim only?) and it's very useful to be able to pop in different sims or even use your mobile phone sim instead temporarily. I'm not sure how e-sim works with new contracts (assume you have to commit to a new long-term deal)?...
I came from the M2 iPad Pro to the M4 and I am honestly disappointed with the “Upgrade” the speakers are worse and the gaming performance is actually worse in my personal experience and the new model drops frames more along with more minor lag spikes to me this feels more like a downgrade than a Upgrade sure it has a nicer screen but what I mentioned feels worse and not to forget the durability is also worse on the newer one since they made it thinner
No I will keep it I only upgraded because my M2 cracked so I figure why not get a new one even though I feel disappointed with it its still a good device though the M2 just feels better

Just ordered an m2 iPad Pro today. I have a mini 6 and I love it but I wanted something bigger. Somehow I ended up in the Apple ecosystem completely. MacBook Air, Mac Studio, iPhone 14, Apple Watch, and 3 ipads 🤷🏾♂️ but they make products that just work! Thanks for the video, confirmed my decision.
Yeah it’s much nicer than the mini even though I absolutely love the mini! And how do you like the Mac Studio? I still haven’t tried one but have wanted to get one since it came out
@@JonAdamsTech yeah the mini is great, love the portability but I can’t stop thinking it’s too close to my phone so I always just use my phone instead. I love the studio though. For editing photos and videos I don’t think it’s ever slowed down once. And like all the other Apple products, it just works.
M2 benefits over M4 for me: - not too thin. not too easy to accidentally bend. - has physical SIM slot for the cellular option. good for most countries where you can get better deals/ switch SIMs easily. - apple "tandem" OLED is probably really good, but still has a higher risk of a shorter live via burn-in than LCDs. - price M4 benefits over M2 for me: - "better screen" at least at the the of purchase. - 80% battery limiter will extend the life expectancy by quite a bit.
I'd be far more likely to buy one of the newer models if Apple had added an additional thunderbolt port . As a creator reliant on dongles that's far more appealing to me than raw power that in all honesty I doubt I could ever take advantage of. A thing to add on here. The iPad mini 6 is still relevant today with all apps running smoothly albeit those video editing apps. As someone who purchased iPad m2 11 1TB and iPad mini 6 both with cellular. The physical sim tray still exists while these m4 is purely eSIM. I will pop out and swap between these iPads which is really convenient. Unless is there a way to transfer eSIM between devices that I have not learned. These physical sim tray are important to me. I am in SG which iPhones are still using physical sim. And having SIM card matters.
Never bought a phone/ipad from Amazon. When it say’s ‘excellent’ condition and ‘(renewed)’, is it truly that. Would it be noticeable that it has been used before?
My brother bought them over the years some have been good some have not been it’s a risk but if you see “open box” those are usually identical to new someone just opened and returned id choose that if at all possible but not always available
For me the main reason for the M2 iPad Pro is the older magic keyboard... I can't get why Apple made the geometry so much worse that for me it makes no sense... it makes it like a laptop instead of an even more mobile iPad... so the older for me... by far
It's great hardware, but it's iPadOS... The M1 iPad 12.9" which is already complete overkill can be had for 1/3 of the price of the M4. You can literally buy a MacBook Pro M1 and a 12.9" iPad M1 and have money left over for a weekend away somewhere - that's also an option to consider :)
I want to buy an ipad for animation , some light editing and art . I am a little bit lost because i don t know what to do . Is the m2 pro better than the air m2 ? Also, i know the apple pen pro it s not working with m2 pro but i don t know if that's a really big problem . The pro models will always be better, especially if you make money with these animations, but the Air models are still really great so you can't really go wrong with either.

Great review, but maybe you forgot to mention the speakers, because it’s not that simple. I listened both M2 and M4 11 inches and have to say - M2 sounds a bit more crisp and a bit more deep. It’s not that big difference, but you can easily notice it side by side. Also, the PWM thing. I’m PWM sensitive to, let’s tell, “OLED screens that were saved on”. I measured my iPhone 14 and 15 pro PWM %, and it was 8/10% speaking of full/mid brightness - and I’m fine with it. When we talk about iPad Pro OLED M4 - unit I’ve tested had 15/23% and I really feel eye strain after 10-15 minutes of using it.

I am still confused because I am a professional PUBG Mobile gamer and I don't know if I should go for m2 or m4 because lots of PUBG Mobile players are buying m4 but my budget is a little bit tight but I can go for m4 but that will make me spend all my money, so I am not sure if m2 will last 5 to 6 years for gaming performance.

I'm at a point where 256GB on my 2018 11" iPad Pro is not enough for my needs. I use it for video and photo editing, and my last family trip netted ~600GB of video. So I am looking for a 2TB model, as I don't like external drives sticking out for too long. So IPP M2 vs IPP M4 from perspective of things that are important to me: - Media import from camera and/or iPhone via USB - is dependent on the read speed of external device, which benefits M2 due to price - Media export to external drive for backup - both M2 and M4 offer USB4, but even with an NVMe connected transfer in both cases will be throttled by read speeds of internal memory which is around 2.5-3GB/s. This benefits M2 due to price. - M2 has one more LTE band and SIM tray - Both devices have the same wifi specs, which benefits M2 due to price - I already have Apple Pencil which will not work on M4 (although internal battery is shot and I may need replacement) - I have a magnetic iPad stand which will not work on M4 - I liked Brydge MAX+ keyboard. Hopefully they will sort themselves as company soon and re-release this keyboard with redesigned hinges. It's about 100USD less than Magic Keyboard and has function keys. - M4 is faster than my M1 Pro MBP. I don't want tablet to be faster than my main computer as this would surely make me want to upgrade my laptop next. - I didn't notice that iPadOS18 would improve my workflow in any way, so this still benefits M2 due to its price - M4 IPP has nicer screen, M2 has the same screen as 2018 IPP. But I do color corrections on an external monitor so that's not such a big deal. So I think even though M4 is flashier and nicer, I will let my wallet decide here and get refurbished M2.
Solid video. I am mostly interested in how the oled compares to the miniled. I can’t say I’ve ever considered the miniled lacking, and I have seen reports of a grainy image on the new oled models especially at lower to medium brightness settings - which is probably where the brightness will be most of the time.
A truly amazing and informative video. I'm going to buy an iPad soon. I was torn between the M2 and M4 chip, but after watching this video, I saw that there really was no need to spend more money for the M4 chip. The M2 chip really doesn't lag behind the M4. But sometimes I have thoughts like M2 is weak compared to M4 chip, it would be better if I buy a new iPad. Do you think there will be updates to the M2 chip for a long time, my friend? Normally there is 1 model difference between them, I have no doubt that this will happen.
Scored a refurbished 1tb 11 inch M2 for $800, extremely satisfied, my usecase involves the screen being on and showing the same thing for multiple hours at a time so i was a bit wary about going OLED and also the amount of money ive saved is considerable.
Great review as always Jon! I heard someone say that the whole reason for the M4 is for power efficiency and the reason it can run the tandem OLED displays. Kind of makes sense since I agree that even the M1 was powerful and any of these iPads would be great. I also would like to see a more robust iPadOS or the iPadOS Pro. I think it could be a great OS with some tweaks and some modifications to the “Pro” apps.

@@JonAdamsTech I have an old laptop that’s on its last leg that I don’t use anymore. I have a Mac mini m2 desktop set up, so I have that as my main PC and the IPad will be for travel and convenience.
I really couldn’t justify spending the $1,000 on the iPad Pro. Maybe another time but trying to figure out which to buy was a nightmare. I went with the iPad Air M2 😅
I own iPad Pro M1 12.9”. Based on the online reviews that M4 iPad Pro with OLED got even brighter, colourful, perfect black level screen etc., I ordered one to see if I should replace my M1 Pro. I found indeed it is brighter, better contrast and more punchy colours and of course buttery smooth. What I did not like is that it has quite a warmer tone, skins tone is not great. When I kept M1 and M4 Pro side by side it was quite evident - M1 I found more neutral and natural colours. I’ve done lots of photo editing and quite sensitive to colour accuracy - did not find M4 convincing enough to and worth $1,300 USD. May be later OLED improvement would be better, for now M1 Pro continues to be excellent.
I’m waiting on the m4 in the mail….the only reason I went for that one is because I wanted to future proof it….also I have been burned buying refurbished and renewed products…. Bought a iPhone 11pm from Amazon and the phone would randomly dim even in the sun and the speakers sounded worse than the iPhone SE 2020 so yeah I’ll need all of my future products brand new with Apple care

I am a full time artist and designer.. I do digital painting a lot dan also do design, animation and 3D stuff… In your opinion if i get Ipad Pro M2 128gb will it enough? I won’t while drawing or do animation will causes lag or the memory will so fast full.. ☺️
If you’re doing all of that you may want to upgrade the storage but other than just needing more space for your work on the iPad you’ll be fine with the ram and cpu capabilities. Do you have your work posted anywhere? I’d love to check it out!
Pro m2 if you want better sound and the 2 cameras. Pro m4 if u want better screen, new pencil, and keyboard where the front camera is centered. My M2 pro is great and still strong.

Got a 128gb iPad Pro m2 11 inch cell for 699$ I like that it has mMmWave im not sure why they removed that even though I wanted the oled but that killed me. I use it a lot on the go

Great videos that get right to the information. I’m going to get the M2 11” iPad Pro. I don’t want it to be too big, but I could see there being times I wish it were bigger with a 12.9”. Then I realized I can just connect to a monitor when I need a larger screen.
Never had an ipad before 🙃 So, i was wondering, do you need the M2 Pro's 120hz if you only going to use the ipad for taking notes, sheetmusic, maybe some drawing, reading e-books and such 🤔 It seems to me the iPad air M2 seems to be a good buy, but it only has 60hz ... dont know if that is a deal breaker or important 🤔 Dont need the tandem oled, the extra speakers or the m4 chip ...
Very good video. However, I have to express a different viewpoint about what seems to be the universal view about taking pictures with the ipad. If you go into almost any retail store M-F, you will see individuals using tablets to take pictures. These are the salespeople, vendors, merchandisers, etc, that have to provide pictures of the shelves/product placement and pricing in the report/survey of the visits. Oftentimes, a wide angle view is required, and the aisles are not wide enough to allow the view required. The presence of a wide range lens is a very convenient addition for these people. I sometimes think that there’s a view among many Apple users that if Steve Jobs didn't think of it, then there's no need, i.e., the lack of a calculator on the ipad.
Just got a new iPad pro 13 for 1/3rd less than the 2024 new one. Took your advice and dropped down to 256 instead of 512 and I’m using my SSD and all that extra money that I saved means I can actually buy a keyboard. If I need one. Thanks for the great honest reviews. I appreciate it!

For me the competition is between the old ipad pro and the new ipad air. Personally I dont think anyone, besided people who draw, should buy the bew ipad air over the old ipad pro.
I don't even think it's a good decision as well, the apple pencil pro is very tempting, however, the ips lcd panel of the air 6 is the deal breaker, ipad pro m2 12.9" has the mini LEDs which is more color accurate. It's a double edge sword but I'm still more rooting for the Mini LED
Great comparison! This is what I’ve been looking for. I feel the M4 is poised to replace the MacBook Air. If they can change the file management system and bring the laptop os to the platform then it would pretty much make the MBair a bit useless. But who knows? Apple seems to be putting a jet engine in a Prius at this point and it doesn’t make sense 🤔

That’s a great question, I don’t travel much and live in the USA so I haven’t had a bunch of experience having to switch out SIM cards, sorry man!

I will pop out and swap between these iPads which is really convenient. Unless is there a way to transfer eSIM between devices that I have not learned. These physical sim tray are important to me.

I can’t speak for every device sold but the ones I’ve gotten are solid and not noticeably used
My brother bought them over the years some have been good some have not been it’s a risk but if you see “open box” those are usually identical to new someone just opened and returned id choose that if at all possible but not always available
For me the main reason for the M2 iPad Pro is the older magic keyboard... I can't get why Apple made the geometry so much worse that for me it makes no sense... it makes it like a laptop instead of an even more mobile iPad... so the older for me... by far

It's great hardware, but it's iPadOS... The M1 iPad 12.9" which is already complete overkill can be had for 1/3 of the price of the M4. You can literally buy a MacBook Pro M1 and a 12.9" iPad M1 and have money left over for a weekend away somewhere - that's also an option to consider :)

The pro models will always be better, especially if you make money with these animations, but the Air models are still really great so you can't really go wrong with either.

Great review, but maybe you forgot to mention the speakers, because it’s not that simple. I listened both M2 and M4 11 inches and have to say - M2 sounds a bit more crisp and a bit more deep. It’s not that big difference, but you can easily notice it side by side. Also, the PWM thing. I’m PWM sensitive to, let’s tell, “OLED screens that were saved on”. I measured my iPhone 14 and 15 pro PWM %, and it was 8/10% speaking of full/mid brightness - and I’m fine with it. When we talk about iPad Pro OLED M4 - unit I’ve tested had 15/23% and I really feel eye strain after 10-15 minutes of using it.
They are different but most people won’t have them side by side so it’s not that big of a deal to me

I’ve been on the lookout for an M2 iPad Pro on different retailers because I know they had a price cut on it but sadly can’t find them anymore as most already updated their stocks to the M4 iPad Pro.
Have you looked at the Apple refurbished store?
I'm at a point where 256GB on my 2018 11" iPad Pro is not enough for my needs. I use it for video and photo editing, and my last family trip netted ~600GB of video. So I am looking for a 2TB model, as I don't like external drives sticking out for too long.
So IPP M2 vs IPP M4 from perspective of things that are important to me:
- Media import from camera and/or iPhone via USB - is dependent on the read speed of external device, which benefits M2 due to price
- Media export to external drive for backup - both M2 and M4 offer USB4, but even with an NVMe connected transfer in both cases will be throttled by read speeds of internal memory which is around 2.5-3GB/s. This benefits M2 due to price.
- M2 has one more LTE band and SIM tray
- Both devices have the same wifi specs, which benefits M2 due to price
- I already have Apple Pencil which will not work on M4 (although internal battery is shot and I may need replacement)
- I have a magnetic iPad stand which will not work on M4
- I liked Brydge MAX+ keyboard. Hopefully they will sort themselves as company soon and re-release this keyboard with redesigned hinges. It's about 100USD less than Magic Keyboard and has function keys.
- M4 is faster than my M1 Pro MBP. I don't want tablet to be faster than my main computer as this would surely make me want to upgrade my laptop next.
- I didn't notice that iPadOS18 would improve my workflow in any way, so this still benefits M2 due to its price
- M4 IPP has nicer screen, M2 has the same screen as 2018 IPP. But I do color corrections on an external monitor so that's not such a big deal.
So I think even though M4 is flashier and nicer, I will let my wallet decide here and get refurbished M2.

Solid video. I am mostly interested in how the oled compares to the miniled. I can’t say I’ve ever considered the miniled lacking, and I have seen reports of a grainy image on the new oled models especially at lower to medium brightness settings - which is probably where the brightness will be most of the time.
Yeah it’s hard to complain about any of the iPad screens, they’re both beautiful and if you don’t have them side by side you’d never know a difference

I was torn between the M2 and M4 chip, but after watching this video, I saw that there really was no need to spend more money for the M4 chip. The M2 chip really doesn't lag behind the M4. But sometimes I have thoughts like M2 is weak compared to M4 chip, it would be better if I buy a new iPad. Do you think there will be updates to the M2 chip for a long time, my friend? Normally there is 1 model difference between them, I have no doubt that this will happen.

Great review as always Jon! I heard someone say that the whole reason for the M4 is for power efficiency and the reason it can run the tandem OLED displays. Kind of makes sense since I agree that even the M1 was powerful and any of these iPads would be great. I also would like to see a more robust iPadOS or the iPadOS Pro. I think it could be a great OS with some tweaks and some modifications to the “Pro” apps.

I own iPad Pro M1 12.9”. Based on the online reviews that M4 iPad Pro with OLED got even brighter, colourful, perfect black level screen etc., I ordered one to see if I should replace my M1 Pro. I found indeed it is brighter, better contrast and more punchy colours and of course buttery smooth.
What I did not like is that it has quite a warmer tone, skins tone is not great. When I kept M1 and M4 Pro side by side it was quite evident - M1 I found more neutral and natural colours. I’ve done lots of photo editing and quite sensitive to colour accuracy - did not find M4 convincing enough to and worth $1,300 USD.
May be later OLED improvement would be better, for now M1 Pro continues to be excellent.

I am a full time artist and designer.. I do digital painting a lot dan also do design, animation and 3D stuff… In your opinion if i get Ipad Pro M2 128gb will it enough? I won’t while drawing or do animation will causes lag or the memory will so fast full.. ☺️
If you’re doing all of that you may want to upgrade the storage but other than just needing more space for your work on the iPad you’ll be fine with the ram and cpu capabilities. Do you have your work posted anywhere? I’d love to check it out!

You’d be fine with the m2 pro or the m2 air. I’d probably suggest the pro if the price is right.
Pro m2 if you want better sound and the 2 cameras. Pro m4 if u want better screen, new pencil, and keyboard where the front camera is centered. My M2 pro is great and still strong.

Great videos that get right to the information. I’m going to get the M2 11” iPad Pro. I don’t want it to be too big, but I could see there being times I wish it were bigger with a 12.9”. Then I realized I can just connect to a monitor when I need a larger screen.

Very good video. However, I have to express a different viewpoint about what seems to be the universal view about taking pictures with the ipad. If you go into almost any retail store M-F, you will see individuals using tablets to take pictures. These are the salespeople, vendors, merchandisers, etc, that have to provide pictures of the shelves/product placement and pricing in the report/survey of the visits. Oftentimes, a wide angle view is required, and the aisles are not wide enough to allow the view required. The presence of a wide range lens is a very convenient addition for these people. I sometimes think that there’s a view among many Apple users that if Steve Jobs didn't think of it, then there's no need, i.e., the lack of a calculator on the ipad.

Batter life on both is multi day so I didn’t talk specifics, what matters most is if it lasts a full day of use and both of these do.

I don't even think it's a good decision as well, the apple pencil pro is very tempting, however, the ips lcd panel of the air 6 is the deal breaker, ipad pro m2 12.9" has the mini LEDs which is more color accurate. It's a double edge sword but I'm still more rooting for the Mini LED

Great comparison! This is what I’ve been looking for. I feel the M4 is poised to replace the MacBook Air. If they can change the file management system and bring the laptop os to the platform then it would pretty much make the MBair a bit useless. But who knows? Apple seems to be putting a jet engine in a Prius at this point and it doesn’t make sense 🤔
