How to Use the Front Jack on a Deere 3025E or Any Other FEL Equipped Tractor

  • Got viewer mail today from Paul who has a Deere 3025E stuck in water. Paul lives in Texas and they've gone from frigid cold in February to rain, rain and more rain. His tractor is parked in a shed with standing water. He wanted to know if that was a problem.
After looking at the picture, I didn't think Paul's tractor was going to be hurt much by the moisture. There was water just barely up to the bottom of the front rims and also standing in the loader bucket. There's an easy fix by using the built-in front jack on the tractor, otherwise known as the front end loader.
I told Paul to pick the loader up and dump it out and then curl it until it was face down. Then move the joystick forward to push the loader into the concrete floor and lift the front end of the tractor up. Then put some blocks under the front end so the rims aren't in water. Thinking about it now, I should have had him lift the bucket up and turn it over so it would drain and then put a short post under it, so it's not in the water.
He did that and that made him feel better.
My advise really paid off a few weeks later when things dried out and enabled Paul to get started with brush hogging. The following, in Paul's words, are what happened next...
"Using your technique of lifting the front tires off the ground, I replaced my 4x4 posts with a couple of 2x10's I use for ramps, and set the tractor back down. That got me out of my still soggy barn.
I was able to mow a lot of the old pathways I'd built to get between my mesquite trees, and tame the brush on the edges of my main road.
I ran into trouble while mowing one side of the property that was still holding more water than I had thought.
Before I sunk my tractor beyond help, I retrieved my 4x4's and my 2x10's. I lifted the front end of the tractor, slid the boards back to the front tires, added a couple more 4x4's for the back tires and drove the tractor out of the bog and onto drier ground.
One little lesson from you saved me from letting my tractor sit in the muck until it dried. Tractors are a lot handier than trucks."
Nice work, Paul for figuring that all out. Message to all viewers who are new to tractors and have front end loaders...they work well as a jack!

Hi Mike, I just wanted to let you know that our local classic tractor club just held a tractor ride this past weekend. I videoed it for my channel instead of taking one of my own classics. This club likes to cruise at 14 mph and since I have 2 old John Deeres, a 1940 9n Ford, and a small Kubota utility, I didn't want to eat dust behind all of the Farmalls. I drove my car and videoed the ride for my channel. There was lots of really nice old iron on this ride. Check it out when you get a moment. I think that you will enjoy the step back in time. Thanks Mike. Love your channel.

It seems like this whole country has been hit with crazy weather. Hats off to Paul for figuring out how to get his tractor out.

Great job Paul! I’ve buried a tractor numerous times, but never that bad and I’ve always been able to pull myself out by curling the bucket. Except when I got the tractor stuck sideways in a ditch. Had to get a kubota excavator to pull it out 😂🤣

Sometimes laying the bucket flat on the ground it will not raise the front wheels high enough off the ground. That is probably the reason why he did it that way.

You can also sometimes use the bucket to "walk" the tractor out in reverse if the muck gets worse ahead of the tractor. Either way, stuck is stuck and you have to get it out somehow.

I stuck my tractor in a very similar way. My problem was that I couldn't go forward to get out because what was in front of me was worse. What I had to do instead was disconnect the rotary cutter and basically drag it to drier ground with my side-by-side and a winch. I was then able to "walk" the tractor out using the loader bucket to "push" backwards a small bit at a time while going in reverse until the tires got traction on some 2x8 boards that I set down and I was able to back out. The technique was to curl the bucket down all the way, lower the loader to the point where it just wanted to lift the tractor, then curl the bucket up while simultaneously slowly go in reverse. I had to repeat the process several times since the tractor would only move about a foot or so each time, but it got it out.
It made a mess, but I was able to get the tractor out and get it washed with the only thing damaged being my pride.

That is a great idea of using the bucket to help get your tractor out of the mud. I try to keep my tractors out of the muck like that and just worry instead about other things around the home.

The down side of putting the bucket flat on the ground is that you don’t have enough cylinder length to get the front end off the ground very far.

The front bucket has saved me in mud multiple times. :)

Up in Maine clearing snow on a very long driveway. I used the bucket to get out of stuck situations. Usually in revererse going up hill. If u time it right and use low gear it works great.

It is obvious that you weren't here in West Texas or you would have been talking about the dust and high winds that come during March.
Thanks for the great videos and for your responses to viewers.

It has been crazy down here in Texas for sure. We finally have been able to get out and do some property maintenance. I got some brush hogging, ditch hogging, and box blade grading work done last week thanks to it finally drying up some.

One thing I have done is to use my loader to help me back out of the mud. I dumped the bucket then lowered the loader boom till front tires was off the ground then as I backed the tractor I curled the bucket. That provided enough help to back out of the mud.

Yes it’s been wet here in Texas but it’s a lot better than a drought. Cows and horses are enjoying the grass. It’s also been a bumper crop for mosquitoes. 😆

Paul, THANK YOU! You gave me a great topic for a video, it has almost 12,000 views in less than two full days since it was posted, so it has hit a nerve with the audience. Your pictures were OUTSTANDING in illustrating the point. I could never have created that here, we don't have enough topsoil. I appreciate your willingness to share information and possibly help someone out of a similar situation. Hope things get back to normal there soon, and the bees make a lot of honey :).

It was a very wet spring here in Central Oklahoma also. Now it's so hot it's like stepping in front of a hair dryer when it's windy.

Also, learn to walk the tractor out of mud by rolling the bucket.
You can save yourself a lot of trouble by using the bucket to get out of mud as soon as you notice it starting to sink.

One thing I would say is don't put industrial tires on a true farm tractor. He has those wide slick industrial tires. The r1 ag tires have more bite.
