Good info Alex! If anyone wants to learn from Alex in person, he is teaching two classes this summer at the beautiful seaside resort of Camden, Maine.....Maine Coast Workshop | Woodworking School
Alex thanks for clarifying about brands and their differences. I have ashley iles, two cherries and pfeil and recently bought the Schaff fishtail set. All have different contours given the nominal curvature. The ashley iles tools are very robust tools and have a feel of great solidity and control. Pfeil are lighter, shorter and have an effortless feel to them. Both are a pleasure to carve with and I soon found myself reaching instinctively for the right tool for the task, and it could be either depending on the presentation and wood. I am happy to have both. Two cherries are also good but not too many sweeps available. Schaaf have many quality control problems and I haven't had time yet to see if this includes steel quality. I'm hoping they will sort themselves out as they are certainly trying hard to be the high value contender. Anyway please keep posting, and if you can find the time display the tool type being used as you carve. This is invaluable and will go well with the demonstrations of your fantastic carving form. Cheers
One of the best live streams and not just because it was my comment. You always have great content but this one was the best informational one ever. Thank you
