So i recently watched an awesome video featuring a retired blue angel navy pilot giving a tour of the FA-18 he used during his time as an angel. He also spoke about his time as a navy pilot and his experience w/carrier landings in the hornet. One thing he talked about which i found extremely interesting, was how navy pilots use "hacks" to assist with landings. He explained that it is possible to use the FA-18 flight control diagnostic system to set the trim in such a way that the aircraft will automatically hold the perfect AOA for a carrier landing. He said that they use a specific page within the diag mode that allows them to enter a specific number, which commands the appropriate control surfaces to move and place the aircraft at the perfect aoa. He went on to say that the system isnt designed for that purpose, but pilots use it to aid in carrier landings.
I was wondering if that diag mode is modeled on the hornet in DCS and if so, has anyone ever attempted to use it in the way described by the navy blue angels pilot? If anyone is interested i can even tell you the values for the diag setting and the subsequent optimal aoa.
I cant wait to get on DCS. I plan to buy a nice powerful PC tower, a hotas flight control kit, and track ir. Btw, besides having a stick, throttle, and tracker (which i believe to be must haves for dcs) do you guys think rudder pedals are necessary? or are they something to buy in the future? Thanks in advance.

F18 literally has an automatic carrier landing system.

so what I learned from this video:
    just ignore this page.
    correct?

PSIA is the absolute pressure, compared to a vacuum. PSIG is the pressure shown on a pressure gauge (measurements made relative to the environment around the gauge, usually).

I've still got all the IBIT/PBIT charts from working on F18s many moons ago. Once ED incorporate the NWWDDI I'll be impressed :)

The Aardvark was manufactured by General Dynamics, not General Electric :) The same company that gave us the F-16 before it was bought by Lockheed.

A mild nit, before computers there was no way to self test the avionics, with computers that capability exists.

Is the bit tests necessary/mandatory to do to get everything working? Or can you just go f*ck all and ignore it and things will still work as intended?

I think you only do the FCS bit in the real startup procedure. Rest you can ignore.

Different for each plane. Try RCtrl+V or Lctrl+V for most planes

and herein lies my challenge with DCS. I recently watched your future of DCS video with ED - the average playing time is 25min. I want to 'play' in a SIM, but I don't want to spend an hour fcuking around with fuel pumps, INS alignment and then flying across a barren landscape to then have forgotten the things I need to do to get a brick to appear on the radar.
As I get a RWR lock warning I spin my head around the cockpit for my foe, I roll and pull back on the stick to get nose authority on what turns out to be a spec of dust on my monitor. I then get a launch warning, realise that my FA18 ECM is setup to do something, possibly Auto mode, but is automatically doing the square root of SFA. I do remember that I've got E and C keys cunningly mapped to the corresponding decoys and dump my load just as an A120 goes through my cockpit.
I contemplate making some time to now go and watch one of the 20 or so most excellent FA18 training videos and writing down what sequence things need to be done and what bindings I need to my Logitech 3D Pro. So this is probably around the 25min mark that many get to and quit. I persevere. I've now got a list of stuff to map to stick and keyboard and notes that go remind me how to setup the systems and then what to press to lock things up BVR. I use the training mission to shoot down drones. I even get to using TWS and find the use of the S key to allow me to lock, launch, switch and repeat. Most satisfying. Then I reflect on what I've actually achieved and realise that I've not exactly defended my nation in a thrilling mock battle.
Maybe a campaign? I've bought a few and conclude that I don't want to fcuk about for 20min before finding a another spec of dust on my monitor. PVP!! I go online, filter by no. of players. Go for the biggest. Take off on the taxiway, F10 for where to go. I can't see any foe but can see lots of blue over there, so head in that approx. direction. I see some bricks, I lock and mange to shoot it down only to be informed that I've just down one of my own. WTAF. I do some more research and realise that I need to turn on the datalink to make my display helpfully make them a different colour. I go again. I'm on it. Full AB. I find a bad guy with DL on, lock it and then get a low fuel warning. I get notched and appear to have then pointed my antenna at the moon but the mapping logic I used didn't appear to have set the lower the antenna again. EW is going off on one so I know I'm in trouble, I dive for the valley, run out of fuel and crash land in a field. I come to a stop. Eject for the hell of it and then watch my plane burn and look around the skies above me to see a contrail in an otherwise blue sky. My time is done. It's dinner time.
I love the concept. I love the realism. I love the real-like feeling of the flight dynamics. I love the aircraft. I've bought many, sold on the belief that 'I'm going to learn this one'. The very first one I bought after the Flaming Cliffs collection, was the A10C - I spent 30 mins in it about 2yrs ago? and haven't used it since.
For people like myself, not stupid people with limited amount of time to devote to the 'game', I'm encouraged by the things I heard in that interview. I like the idea of more succinct opportunities contained within a scenario in which everything is setup and you're ready to go - somewhere between a campaign and an instant-action sort of thing. The only thing in addition that would really help me and people like me , I'm guessing, would be a significant improvement in the training within the 'game'. Whilst the YT videos are fantastically detailed and well explained - having to pause the game, alt-tab to watch 10mins training video, make some notes and then alt-tab back again is painful.
The training is good for some modules is pretty good - the FA18 for example. Being an ED product you'd probably expect it, but even here, the stuff that is taught and the stuff that people actually do e.g. in PVP doesn't correlate. The F16 training is 'minimal' which gets me to the point of basically taking off, 'blue-sky' BVR and close combat, followed by some perfect scenario bombing. Frustrating. In game, in-cockpit training which allows me to learn what I need to do in 'real'! situations such as PVP.
It's very difficult to explain - I wan't the reality experience, I don't want a 'game' with arcade style dynamics, I do want the immersion knowing that if I turn the fuel cutoff that the engine will stop, But I don't have the time to spend the hours a week needed to perfect my systems knowledge. Being able to fire up the PC and drop into the heat of the battle is what I want to do within 30mins and If I'm rubbish, an in-cockpit training session that takes me though those scenarios. I can visualise starting that training session with an SBAR kickoff and then: 'OK, so this is what you need to do...' the switches would highlight intime and move on when I've pressed it - but get rid of the active pause and painfully long detail and onscreen text boxes. I want a virtual instructor to take me through it. I can learn the detail beneath if I'm interested and have several free hours..
Love the product and the passion - just let me access it in an executive summary style - the detail below is still there for the people and professional customers that do need it.

Long story short it's a study sim, where you should make you own study objectives to explorer and learn systems. It is not intended to purchase an module an fly it for 2 hours and expect you will be efficient in a sortie.

... and that is the challenge of Instructional Design folks. How to provide knowledge transfer that satisfies the largest group. You need all of the detail for those that want to get tossed into the deep end of the pool, while at the same time make it parseable for the times when it is 2:00 AM, Sunday morning and you are simply looking for that key piece of info that will get you back to the task in the shortest amount of time.
By the way, BIT Test... is redundant, it's just BIT or Built in Test... or maybe BIT Check, if it is not used too often. :)
