- With some help from our good friends at Sellier & Bellot, Larry was able to get his hands on an incredibly rare Soviet machine pistol, the Stechkin APS.

There's this story-legend, that when Stechkin himself was graduating from the Tula Mechanical Institute, his thesis was building a gun. When the commission was checking the blueprints one of them said literally "This gun won't shoot and it can't".Stechkin replied by pulling out a prototype of his gun and shooting three blank rounds in the air.He graduated.

There is, without a doubt, no other gun channel on RUclips with as cool a slow motion sequence as Vickers.
Agreed, just a shame the sounds are so bad.
@@PolyFPV the sounds are cringy.
just wish there was longer segments of full auto not edited to show the actual rof
How bout FullMag? ruclips.net/user/ratedrr
@Jones unfortunately yes, they don't record the original gun sounds and use sound effects. Not talking about the slow motion footage mind you, the normal footage itself uses sfx
Hey, I'm Russian. Born in 1968 in USSR. In my youth, i saw sailors armed with Stechkin pistols. These guys guarded the entrance to the naval base.
Yeah crazy how common they where during those times. Now they’re incredibly rare to find! 👍 but very cool story my freind
Made for tankist soldier's
interesting soviet gun.
it's like G18, but from 1954...
They had automatic Mausers in the 30s.
It's far cooler than a Glock 18. Larry completely wiffed by not mentioning the rate reducer mechanism. That gun would be uncontrollable and run 1200+ RPM without it. You can see in the slow motion footage that the hammer pauses for a considerable amount of time after the slide closes.
Im pretty sure Ian at Forgotten Weapons has video about APS, so if You want to know more about mechanism I'd check it.

_"That gun would be uncontrollable and run 1200+ RPM without it."_
Machine pistols are called the "ultimate firearm to have for a gunfight in a phone booth" for a reason. That said, the Glock machine pistols seem... "controllable"... enough to work around without a stock/brace. If just barely. It's definitely one of those things are more cool than practical, however.
My buddy is an SOT and has an original Glock 18C and a stock for it. There's a video of me firing it on my channel. It's surprisingly controllable with a stock, but it's not anything like a real subgun. Without a stock, aim at their balls and you might get a few torso hits. It runs so fast, it's hard to get consistent triples with it. It needs burst mode or a rate reducer.
Russian pilot shot down in Syria last year used Stechkin to fight back the terrorists
@Senpo Maker funny how so many russia haters speak russian :D

Beautiful and more informative than I expected. Soviet dark red-brown phenolic resin is just pure aesthetics to me :)
Have to agree that 1:46 looks pretty good.
@Jones That's probably where it started. It may be archaic now, but 'Bakelite' type polymer was a really great material at the time. And it does have that pattering that would be similar to wood grain.
This gun has a firing range of up to 200 meters.
**Interflug** Quick question: have you ever been in some kind of short time confrontational with someone who not welcoming you? Tell this to my guys, who fell down in Iraq and Afghan. Brain-washed dickhead.

“I got to inspect the Stechkin during a raid”
Thanks for remind me that you’re cooler than me again, Larry!
I had that while serving as a police officer in Europe . When we switched from that to Glock 19 it was such a letdown . We used to break car windows with the pistol butt and abuse the living out of them and those guns wouldn’t die . Very reliable and is not a Makarov . Is way better . He didn’t mention the iron sights , which is another interesting aspect . Jus’ saying....
Was it better then the glock?
The fact you had personal career experience in seeing it then actually finally get to shooting it is pretty awesome. Keep bringing it Vickers!
I'm a fan of the Makarov, and I admittedly didn't know this gun existed.
Thanks for the video LAV.

I always take time to watch a Vickers video. They is just the right mix of shooting, and history, just long enough too. No pointless analysis of every detail of the gun, no 15 minutes of plinking. Just a brief this is the gun, here's how it works, let's light it up. Always classy

Cool story about Noriega and getting to handle one of the guns however many years ago..and now getting to shoot one. Would love to hear more stories from back then..that you could actually speak about! Great video as always LAV! ✌
If i'm not wrong, in USA was 6 Stechkin's pistols and one idiot broke stop-slide or other part. Now is 5 pistols available in all States.
Now that is one good looking pistol.
Larry, I saw your video "why I'm fat" and I want to say that you look amazing now and I truly hope you you feel the amazing as well!
Years ago I read an article about a former Russian sniper who served in Afghanistan. It mostly focused on his use and opinion of the SVD but he did touch on that he preferred carrying this (and used it to great effect) as opposed to a krinkov for his back up or when in an area where the SVD was too unwieldy.
I’ve been wanting to find that article again for YEARS now! Thanks for reminding me of it. I was starting to wonder if I had imagined it.
@@TylerLL2112 Good luck I remember reading that about 11-12 years ago.

Mr. Vickers, you probably have the best job in the world.
Larry that working out is paying off. Keep at it brother! Always enjoy your videos.
It's no wonder why you should love Russian weaponry
In fact it's soviet, the fruit of the soviet industrial and engineering capability which is far from being the same in present bourgeois Russia alone.

It would be nice to have a semi auto version available, I used to have a makarov and it was the most reliable pistol I've ever shot. The only rounds that ever hung up in it were the aluminum hulled blazers, steel and brass functioned perfectly in fmj or hollow point.
Worth mentioning it also has adjustable sights for 25, 50, 100 and 200m.
Fuck yea! One of my favorite pistols of all time, a true Russian ganster classic.
Amazing gun. Way ahead of it'd time.
This automatic pistol saves a lot of lives as a backup gun.

Dont lie Larry. You took that Stechkin with you on all your delta raids following that day until hiding it in your wall the day you retired. Im on to you!
APS was also used by Soviet special forces with silencers.
One of my all time favorite machine pistols. Im surprised you didnt mention anything about the rate reducer mechanism. Very interesting design for a rate reducer on a machine pistol. For those of you that didnt notice....750rpm for a machine pistol...very low. Interestingly, these were and still are being used in Ukraine on both sides. Awesome work Mr. Vickers. Keep up the hard-to-find firearm reviews. We love them!
This pistol is used in all local conflicts on the territory of the former USSR - both Chechen wars, in Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, the civil war in Tajikistan, and during the conflict in Donbass, both by pro-Russian militia forces and units loyal to Kiev.
In addition, this pistol is actively used by Russian special forces during the war in Syria.
You can guarantee that if LAV says he got a glance at it in Panama, that's how it went down. Probably very understated. Fucking O.G.
Larry my father was 1-10 and did some work down there with Noriega when I was little. Ever work with 1-10 special forces?
Gun has an interesting delay on hammer drop in full auto mode... Wonder how did they achieve that...! Thanks for sharing...
There is a plunger that sits behind the magazine. When the slide returns to battery it knocks this plunger down, it has go down and return to trip the sear. Same thing in the grip of the Skorpion. Makes for a big grip though.
These were VERY highly prized by SADF troops during the Border War in Angola/Namibia from 1975-1988; SWAPO used them occasionally, but a few East German, Cuban and Russian advisors were KIA'd as well during deep penetration strikes into Angola in 1980/1981/1983 and 1987-1988 and a few allegedly were armed with them
It's so rare that we have one semi-only conversion at the local gunshop for about 1400 USD, complete with the shoulder stock... It's not a hard to find pistol in the eastern EU, although most of these are pretty worn out with a malfunctioning ;) fire selector.
Great controllable ROF. I would love a semi auto version. I’m just a Mak fan.
Vickers Didn't mention how acurrate and controllable the Stechkin is in FA fire. It was my favorite gun to fire in Ukraine. The UA SF guys are still issued stechkins (I saw 1954 models as well) that were brand new never issued before the war in Donbass. The difference is theirs had removable suppressors and a metal T or L style removable rear stock.
lmao the added gun shot sounds...
Very Cool an thanks for showing it Mr. Vickers
You have the coolest job.

I just wish S&B or some other major company would start making decent JHP options for the Makarov. Right now only have Silver Bear, Hornady Critical Defense which under penetrates, and Speer makes Gold Dots, but if you dont load them yourself you wont find them.
Man. You're looking great. Keep up the good work!
Really impressed with this channel!
The momentum of the reciprocating slide vs a small bolt and the movement of the sights seems to be a major detractor of the usefulness of machine pistols.

Dual feed magazine, awesome.
What a cool shot sound of this gun
Perfect, thanks Larry !
Saw one of those at the NRA museum in Fairfax Virginia
Russian pilots love Stechkin. This is undeniable.
Neat machinepistol. really good angles on this video that I enjoyed, but I’ve never been a fan of the way some of these videos are edited with slow-motion variations. Speaking for myself, I want to see regular speed, slow speed and very slow speed. I don’t want to see speeds 10, 9, 7, 4, 3, 2, 1, in various orders.
Just my personal feedback.
And I’d love to hear maybe a minute on each one of these videos where Larry talks about the handling of the gun. Accurate on semi auto? Short bursts? Mag dump on multiple targets? I know you wanna keep the video short but I think this would add a lot to it without extending too much
Excellent slowmo
Larry you’ve got a great video format! Would it be possible to include the slow motion speeds in the videos to better illustrate order of operations during firing?
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE.
Thx bro
hell yeah get it Larry
Too bad the APS Stechkin is not widely used by the Russian military anymore, despite the weight is not that heavy and compared to other machine pistols the APS have more controllable rate of fire which is not too fast. This is my favourite Soviet weapon! It's like Glock 18C but looks more interesting.
There seems to have a ROF reducer, notice the lag of hammer falling after the slide has been completely recoiled.
It also has a silencer, a slit stream with which you can fall into the water ...
Thanks Larry, this is a great advertisement))

Still produced today in Russia. Is very widely used by all the special forces divisions. Russian weapon technology is commonly looked down upon due to lack of real information and actual understanding. Aps is a very excellent platform, it has earned its place as one of Alpha's top counter terrorism picks. Also with proper training, the stock holster isn't needed. Actually is typical never taken into the field. There are modern holsters for it now.
