i still can't believe we got such an iconic fight scene between kim cattrall and fucking joan cusack in a disney movie about figure skating and physics, its GOLD
Shoot, even autistic people have personalities besides their special interest. I'm not saying that the ice princess is autistic-coded because autism wasn't recognized much back then. Just comparing.
This movie had me in a chokehold as a child. I was so into ice skating my american girl doll HAD to have the ice skating set. I lived vicariously through my american girl doll and never actually ice skated. I also recently rewatched this during winter so I am excited for this review! :3
Go figure I loved growing up but can't really revisit now as an adult. Cus like, 1) the hockey player are so mean to the concepts of figure skaters as if they're not hard core athletes, "the boys don't take us seriously" the issue isn't the figure skaters, it's the boys and the men. Not the other women, and then they like don't ever acknowledge they were wrong. Sure they come to her performance later but they never apologize or say anything. And also 2) the brother being angry about the sister getting the scholarship and saying he should have gotten it. Like yes, of course little 10 year old boy. The scholarship, for the girls hockey team. Also it bothered me that the announcers and the jersey's use first names...
When I was a kid, it made me really mad that Tina did Casey so dirty with those new skates. Adults, especially coaches, should behave better than that. And to target a KID?!!! Oh hell no!
but this is exactly why the movie hitted me so hard. My mom was in many aspects the same. I always wanted to figure skate and the only thing my mom wanted me to do is school. At the part where they said "you are giving up your dream" - "no mom, im giving up YOUR dream" i started crying like a waterfall out of nowhere since it impacted my live in so many ways.
Oh gosh this movie, I watch it for the first time when I wast like 8 and honestly I'm still kinda traumatized by the blisters scene, but well, it's all about ✨Physics✨
Also when I watched this movie when I was a kid, I thought there was only one chance at college and they made it look like such a big deal when in reality we can apply to multiple colleges and also figure skating and college at the same time is also possible.
“im not giving up my dream, mom, im giving up yours” - is this not from ANOTHER movie??? like one that i HAVE watched in the last twelve years? someone plz tell me
@@sassygrilledcheesenow i need you to make a video on cinderella story… if nothing else do it for the flip phones and the chad michael murray. and how good hilary looks in a ball cap.
I thought that Casey was played by Anne Hathaway for an embarrassingly long time. Like I just found out via this video that I was hallucinating Anne Hathaway’s face on this woman for years.
I was a figure skater for like a year and this movie was so inaccurate haha but I still love it! Also idk how Casey could even skate in new skates cause when I got my new intermediate level skates, my feet were hurting so bad it took them weeks to break them in. I never had blisters and all that like they showed in the movie, but with how much pain my feet were in there was no way I could perform in a comp with them on.
I just remember I watched this movie for the first time when I was home sick from school, and every time Joan Cusack spoke I would start crying because her voice was giving me a splitting headache. My mom was like "What's wrong? It's just Jessie from Toy Story" and I was just adamant that her voice hurt my head that day.
okay but watch her as Harriet the Spy when she was young and as Georgina Sparks in gossip girl later lmao, she def has her own style she just _knows_ how to perfectly work the disney mode. sorry girled cheese for commenting on multiple of your threads i will go now
that's not fair though! I think it was her being directed by Disney to act that way. in other stuff like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harriet the Spy, she doesn't have that "Hilary Duff" acting. she's actually a really good actress. if you wanna see, I suggest Buffy ( but it is a spoiler to know she will be in it, but it was already spoiled in the video 'cause he made a couple jokes about her being on Buffy ).
The mom reminds me of my grandma, saying that feminism is bad and making things worse for women cuz “the men just don’t dote on us like they used to” 😭
I know I haven't seen this more than once since it came out, because I do not remember Kim Cattrall being the ice skating coach and I'm a big Sex and the City fan. Maybe time for a rewatch.
I liked watching skating, I liked this movie when I was younger I even saw in theaters. I am a huge figure skating fan now and revisiting. Now, I find it laughable that she was able to qualify for junior sectionals against skaters who have years of skating, jumping, and competition experience. I am sure it is possible, but anything is possible in a Disney movie
So I had no idea this was a movie before this video, my introduction and only exposure to the Ice Princess franchise was the Nintendo DS game where you get to dress them up in cute little skating outfits and, in competitions, draw little shapes very quickly or else you don't land the moves lmao
I think Casey not realizing she was being sabotaged with the new skates makes sense emotionally. Yes, she's smart, but shes also a teenage girl who has been shit on by everyone around her and given absolutely no emotional support from her mom in this endeavor. She's blinded by her desire for a motherly figure to approve of her actions and thats why she doesn't realize what Tina is doing
07:19 THAT’S WHAT I’M SAYING like there’s so many beginner figure skaters even on yt who learnt how to do eulers after two years. 10:21 the take off’s not from the landing leg and there’s an outside edge. like girlie just did a double lutz
I struggle a lot identifying jumps that aren’t an obvious take off like an axel because I’ve never actually figure skated lmao but yes, people watch the Olympics once and think they’re gonna do triples in 3 sessions.
@@sassygrilledcheesei struggled a bit myself at the start - i’m not a figure skater either -, but it gets easier to recognize them with time. i still struggle differentiating most flips from lutzes (unless the lutz’s outside edge is DEEP, but it’s a very rare occasion nowadays) and salchows from loops. i have to watch a jump in slow-mo to identify it from its more similar counterpart and if the technique is poor i’m lost lmao

I was actually so obsessed with this movie like- it was NAWT normal. I love it still so much but yh everyone rlly is super mean to poor Casey 😭 so much so that when they're nice to her you really feel like you succeeded in something😭 idk that sounds like a trauma response atp. Also i know i said i support her mom but she rlly was a hater ass bich when it came to skating like what was her problem???
She was a pretty complex character which I appreciated for a role played by a woman (typically we see a lot of 2 dimensional characters played by actresses) and had a real character arc. but Forreal! She was such a hater lmao. And yes Everyone was so mean to Casey too!
This movie made me wanna be a figure skater and then I read the storyline in babymouse where she did skating and it was the worst because it was so early in the morning and super expensive and required actual effort and dedication and I was like oh nevermind lol
Maybe this is the nostalgia talking but I still love this movie despite any inaccuracies. I'm no pro when it comes to figure skating except you skate on ice and do cool moves and wear cool outfits so I don't really care about any of the things the movie got wrong. I think for its time, it was a really well made film with a pretty good story about following your dreams and not your parents' and it also has some pretty entertaining scenes. I still to this day think Casey looks gorgeous during the competition. I also love the friendship between Casey and Jen and just the whole mother daughter relationships in both Tina and Jen and Casey and Joan.
Ok so when the mom talks about the cia back in the day Tonya Harding something happened with her this other ice skater got attacked by Tonya‘s ex-boyfriend and they apparently think that she was involved I don’t know if she was or not but that’s what they’re talking about because nowadays and even and even back when this movie came out and before that people were really hard on ice-skating because now they have to keep a close eye on everything because of that it’s is confusing I love this movie
The boy love interest was actually kinda pointless. Everything he did they could have easily given to Jen and made a "friendship-thing" but if I had to rewrite it I would have had her and Casey end up together romantically, like, a sapphic romance on ice.
Idk but i didn't like the villainisation of her mom, i felt she was valid sometimes but then also I feel like she could have been a little more lenient with casey as well. I like that she came around to supporting her in the end tho.
I haven't watched this movie since i was like 8, I remember picking it out from blockbuster and I was excited, because I was a figure skater. And when I watched it, even though I was probably not yet in private lessons, but I was on a synchro team and had been skating for a few years, I could just tell that this movie's perception of figure skating was completely nonsensical and not how skating works lol. Revisiting it now, it makes even less sense! (Why are children who are supposed to be in snow plow sam doing jumps, and what regional competition are they supposed to be qualifying for through a RECITAL? The kids at my rink who were in snow plow sam for the ice show were 3-5 year olds who still needed help getting across the ice and just did cute little butt wiggles and small two foot turns. Adorable, and on track for their age and skill level, but they're not going to the Olympics any time soon.)

I cannot believe they gave Kim Cattrall a Tonya Harding sub-subplot, that is amazing.

1. Her mom was an academic and saw that figure skating is not a stable career and can bring injuries
2. She did not like the outfits
If the mom is a "super feminist", then she's against her daughter doing girly things, when then also reinforces the "Science is for men" gender role.
