Talking about my Savage Mark II

  • This rifle started as a plain Mark II FV a few years back. Originally bought for general plinking, I was impressed with how accurate it was out of the box. I started upgrading it even before I was seriously interested in precision 22LR shooting.

    The FV- varmint barrel is machined to the exact tolerance as the TR - target barrel . For a little cheaper option. I talked to someone from Savage Lakefield over the phone.
    Great fun I own two. It's true that they become really smooth after time.

    Nice video - thanks for sharing! I am looking to get a Savage and try my hand at NRL22. lots of good reviews on the Mark II, but It's easier to come by the B series, at least in my local stores. Do you know if the B series is just as accurate, or would you recommend holding off for a Mark II?

    I didn't know you had started with the savage mark ii FV. This is the same setup I'm adding to now. I'm already thinking when do I stop trying to accurize the savage and move to something better? One issue I currently have is ammo, I have high velocity only and haven't came across SV ammo to test. But as it stands I have replaced the stock with a Boyd's thumbhole (should have got the at-one or tactical)and just got my diamondback 6-24 and DIP 25moa base and have rings on order. Currently using 6-24 BSA scope until I get my rings in. My stock 10/22 @50yds has tighter groups then the savage!
    I can try bedding the action, if I were to buy a chassis I would be reluctant for the savage instead of a CZ possibly. Don't want to throw in the towel yet there are items to dial in, then evaluate. I seen on a MDT vid the action screws to be tightened to 65 in/lbs! wow that should keep it together. I'm at 18 in/lbs., How high can you go with a laminate stock because of crushing wood...
    Keep up the good work, really liked the look of the KRG Bravo in Sako green!

    Ha! Almost the same exact rig. I have a different butt stock and slightly different vertical grip. Mine is mounted with an Athlon Argos FFP. I’ve added a Scope-Werks turret with larger numbered plus yardage CustomTurretSystems tape. Old eyes here. Warn bipod that I circulate between this and my Savage 6.5 Evolution. No problems with feed but dropping the mag is a two-handed process 😒. Shoots about 1 MOA out to 100 with SK Long Range 40g.

      Very cool, I've heard good things about Athlons but have yet to try one. I've found a method to drop the mags with one hand but it is not as intuitive as some other rimfires.

      Womfat well, Savages aren’t very popular in our NRL22 club. Most go with Vudoos or RPRs. 90% open class. I have a $1,500 SWAF on my centerfire but below 150y I like the $299 Athlon better.

    Do you prefer the 24x for shooting nrl22 style matches? Or do you think the 16x is enough?

    How is the magazine released with this chassis? Does it use the factory release tab?

    • @Womfat
      @Womfat  4 года назад

      It uses the factory magwell and release. It doesn't get in the way at all, it protrudes out from the bottom still

    The Savage mags are its weak point. Their sales rep was in the store last summer and he asked us what improvements could be made to the gun? l looked at him and gave him a stern look and said "really, you don't know? lt needs a decent one handed mag that drops free! Between Mapleseed, Appleseed and PRS, your ancient design is loosing market shares to all of the imported guns. Change the mags and you will sell a lot more product".
    He was not impressed with my attitude lol.

    • @Womfat
      @Womfat  4 года назад +2

      It's a well known issue. Perhaps they're keeping it the same to give people a bit more incentive to pay slightly more and get a B series with the rotary mag.

      @@Womfat My factory 5 rounder started to come apart after 6 years. I "spot welded" with JB weld and clamped for 24 hours and it hasn't give me issues since. Still feeds reliable.
      Mine is a 2012 FV model, when they still had a 'polished' blue finish. Agree with the bolt, it's now pretty smooth after being worked in. I have a EGW 0 MOA rail with Leupold 2-7x33. It's mainly a range plinker and hunting rifle for me. Benched with budget American Eagle 40 gr, it's about 2 MOA at 100 meters. With CCI Mini-Mags and Standard Velocity, it probably is closer 1.25-1.5 MOA with the low power scope. I think I'll put a more powerful scope on and work up to a precision build. To get around the low comb on the factory stock, I've been using a cheek riser pack which seems to do alright.

      @@canadiangunnut yeah, thats a smart DIY trick for the mags. It would be nice if they could come out with a polymer version. I seriously doubt that will ever happen though.

    The price point on the furniture mods for the MKII are just stupid. In most cases I can literally buy 3 brand new MKIIs for a little more than the price of 1 INCOMPLETE furniture set. Meaning, just a chassis with no stock, no grip. For this reason, I will sadly no longer purchase Savage Arms. I have always had Ruger 10/22s but wanted to give Savage a chance. And I really liked the performance of the gun. It was just a very plain looking weapon and I was NOT at all happy with that. And now it seems it will always remain a sad, plain looking gun. I refuse to pay 2 to 3 times the value of the rifle for a furniture set. Does anyone have any kind of insight why that is? Why are the mods so expensive? Also, can someone direct me to reasonably priced mods for the MK II? That would be greatly appreciated.
