Been playing for almost 30 years and this is one of those riffs that always was a struggle. The fact that James can play those, while signing, and once upon a time piss drunk, is unbelievable.
And playing it at like double time occasionally
🎸Master
@skase 😂
Came to learn Blackened. Forgot I don’t know how to play the guitar.
@@Fister_of_Muppets I don't think the goal of this video is "learn the guitar", but totaly master one of the most difficult riffs of Metallica. I'm glad I can find some videos on youtube that are not for beginners. There are not enough for advanced guitarists.
This is a great job and a big step up for humankind !
So funny cause it's so true... I feel your pain.
Started laughing hard in front of office ... beautiful comment !
That tone man sounds exactly like ajfa
This. Incredible!
Dude the AJFA guitar tone is identical to the album, I love it so much!🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
That was my immediate reaction.
@@NMChe56 Same here! I was like dang! It was spot on!
How tf did he get it
@@alvinyakitori8720 prob with bias fx
I think ppl get lost because it starts on the 'and' but your ear naturally tries to place it on the beat. The tail ends on the F note. The ear wants it to be the E
Same with Fight Fire
👍
The tail ending on F makes a lot of sense when you consider how the transition to the first verse sounds cut off, like there's a note missing. That always sounded weird to me but now it makes sense. An argument against this though is that the tail played at the intro ends on an E. Either the first part of the riff begins with a high E (and the tail ends on a low E) or it begins with a low E and the tail ends on an F.
@@ihsahnakerfeldt9280 it begins with a low E and the tail ends on an F. Some find it confusing 'cause their ears want to place snare on the downbeats on fast parts.
@ihsahnakerfeldt9280
*LONGWINDER NECROBUMP INCOMING 😂*
It comes down to understanding the time signatures that the riffs are in, and some of the odd things that they do in the song (and in general).
The explanation for the difference of the tail on the intro seeming to end on the E chug is because is because there is a single measure of 2/2 between that use of the tail and the start of the actual compete riff. The E chug is the 1 of a 2/2 measure, with a dotted half-rest filling the "and-2-and" beats of the measure. Then the main riff, which is in 7/4, start with an open E on the 1 and ends with the F of the tail on the "&" of the 7, before the next bar again starts back on the open E. It becomes more apparent when the intro riff switches to the main verse riff because it isn't cycling in the same structure, and drops into the 6/4 timing of the verse. However, our brains have a tendency to shift the beat to the "&s" because of where Lars is putting the accents of the drum beat, which makes it seem like it drops a beat/'hiccups' when the verse riff starts.
As an aside, they also do this in transition from the intro riff when used as a pre-chorus into the chorus. Though in that transition they use 4 open E chugs, hitting the 1-&-2-& of the 2/2 measure.
AJFA has been a huge part of my metal life for 15 years and has made me compulsively tap my fingers throughout everyday to the drums of Blackened, Shortest Straw, and Dyers Eve. Like I seriously can't stop. I do it while working, watching tv, whatever. Anyone else experience this?
My life bro...my life.
I relate to this. Honestly, Lars' drum playing is awesome!
@@GoblinSatyr totally agreed!
I hum these at work all the time, air guitar (with accurate tabbing), every day at work.. people probably think I'm a weirdo 😂🤷🏻♂️
Frayed ends of sanity is so unbelievably catchy
The fact that there's so much distortion combined with the scooped tone and loud drums makes this album so tricky to figure out by ear, you absolutely nailed the tone and riff!
Your guitar tones are the most amazing thing I've ever seen, I'd love to see you do a tutorial series on how to recreate the metallica album guitar tones
I’d love to see if Hammer Smashed Face by Cannibal Corpse was on Reign in Blood by Slayer (even though neither of those are Metallica)
Much more raining blood or angel of death on tomb of the Mutilated, it would be dope
G Titod if I had to choose either one of those, I’d go with Raining Blood OBVIOUSLY!
@@leonardmoney5986 dude, raining blood is briliant as a full song, but the breakdown from angel of death is sick
The main rif of the breakdown, the harmonized one
Why not all three at some point xD
Disposable heros will make you unstoppable. Its a fun song and it feels like you ran a marathon. Great skills to be learned from that song
Just wanted to add as well, love your reworks dude! I'm putting your versions on more often than the originals! 🤘😈 KEEP METAL ALIVE BROTHERS AND SISTERS!
Yeah its that double C note on the 3rd fret that I need to master. Thanks
Used to think it was C, B
You helped me unlock it! Thanks!
Its nice to seen Im not the only player having trouble with that riff. I have a post-it note on my mirror to remind me to practice it daily and I still cant play along with the record. When I get it right its going to feel incredible. Good video brother \m/
Thank You!!!
Did you know Jason Newsted was the originator of this badass riff
Wow I never realized the intro phrase after the melodic guitar part was the exact same tail of the riff. It's exactly like you said. The different rhythmic accentuation fools the brain into thinking it's different. Decontexualized it sounded like you were playing the intro the whole time. You sir are brilliant!
Every tab I’ve seen has that triplet part as 2-3-4 on the A string. I always felt that was not correct.
Thanks for really good explanation of this “tricky” riff. I play this riff couple years but now I see that playin this way is much easier and simple. And btw really good AJFA tone. 👍
keep it up man, you pretty much nail these what ifs dead on. it just makes me wonder how much of this stuff youve listened to that allows you to do it haha
To be honest, i've never seen such a good blackened cover like yours, u sound exactly like the original song! Congrats!
Thanks man greatly helpfully 🤘
BLACKENED ON THE BLACK ALBUM!!!!!
Nicely explained bro
It’s crazy how you hold ur pick and still play the riff so cleanly lol. I could never
This also explains why the verse riff seemed to start abruptly, like there's something missing between it and the tail to the main riff, but the tail actually ends on an F and the main riffs begins with a (low) E.
I love when I think I’m playing a riff right and then I see stuff like this🤣 thanks dude
Love the guitar tone
The tone is to die for.
That tone is incredible
Bro, I've always wondered why it was hard to hear the tail. Thank you so much
Keep on shredding dude 🤘😈
Thanks dude. I tried learning the tail end once and it never sounded right. Your tutorial helped me get it now. Maybe it was just a mental block of not ending on the E.
Never really been able to nail that tail. Great video man.
Love the explanation and workshop you're giving here. It is also 100% spot on that many "official" transcriptions of these songs are straight up wrong. For example, I have the Cherry Lane book from somewhere in the 90s and the main riff for Blackened is not correct at all. Many things in these books are correct but some are just nowhere near the mark. It really helps to watch videos of the actual musicians playing the songs if you're trying to learn them. With respect to the "sloppiness" I've found that James has a certain amount of "slosh" that is part of his style and I think you cover that very well too.
yes, that's exactly how they play it...very good!
Love the channel brother...im a new sub...i love metallica as much as you do man!....totally into the what if sereis....my favorite one is fuel on st. Anger....dude, you did an awesome job with that man....im tryimg to learn it and pla u along with your arrangement....which I think is way cooler than the actual songs!......alsonthats a killer distortion sound you got in this video....what you using?...
that sobering moment when you realise you've been playing a riff wrong for 20 years! OUCHHH....
thnx 4 the killer lesson bro
Very helpful
Good stuff ⚡💪⚡
That tone!
I love you dude... think I got it now, although its easier for me to play sloppy than be robotic on point xD
Dude it sounds like BIG MICK did your sound 🤘
You have a great teaching technique, and teaching someone how to with metallica, makes it kick maximum ass
nice sound! and the certainty to never be able to downpick such stuff..
My favorite part of this song is that first time this riff comes up after the solo but they switch the beat and then return to the syncopated version. I can play along pretty well except that one part which confuses me every time!
i don't know if this will help, but the build right before has an extra eighth drum beat before going into that riff but if you play on guitar without the extra beat it fits until they switch it back which is all the drums that make it sound off.
You just need to not play the starting low E. Or play it early. Either or will work. I prefer playing early.
@@andrew6978 I know it just trips me up every time because of that rhythm change.
How good is that tone brother it's bang on.
Hey I like this video you show me the right way how to play blackened. I'm trying to play this song and couldn't play it right because I got the other tablature Wasn't showing me how to play it right
Thanks man! Appreciate it! You know what else would be awesome? What if you started doing some lessons on your mashup songs (eg. What if Misery was on AJFA)?. Im kind of getting bored of playing along to all those Metallica albums i’ve learned on guitar and would really jam to your mashup tracks, but I cannot figure them out at all (not experienced enough). That solo from Misery on AJFA (at the groove part) is soooo sweet. Would really want to play it. Sorry if this suggestion puts on any pressure, but I still think your mashup lessons would be highly appreciated! (and not only by me)
fuckin love that tone man
Awesome video! I gotta try this. I could never understand it. Any chance taking a crack at the intro to Ronnie? None of the tabs are right and there is a fan can video showing James playing it for a second but I still cannot figure out the harmonic sound when his finger goes up. Gah! Been trying for years to figure it out.
Damn your good!
I used to have this problem but I got it over time🤘
Nice profile pic let’s go devils!
James Antonacci Thanks man!!! Fellow Metallica fan as well. That’s awesome
Dude you rule!!!
Amasing sound as justice ! How do you get this ?
AweSoMë
James is a sick guitar player...
It's the notes in between that are fucking with me
😂😂
How are you getting that tone? What kind of setup?
I play it the way Metallica plays it live now just because it's easier, but I will definitely learn it this way too
Spot on instruction on Blackened. Overall comments on your channel - 1. Mic in front of face yields good audio but is distracting . 2. Speed up your talking - takes ….to….. long…. for…..you ……to ….. deliver ……the ……information . 🤘
Bro, can you share the tabs of your another song with the style of and justice for all versions?
thank you for the info,... btw every tab says it is not a tripplet there but two notes in the tail... and tripplet sounds to right...
Hey! I have a question. So I just play with my guitar through an amp and I really wanted to know what I would need to play through the stuff online. I don’t understand really what to do or what I need, I feel like I need a million softwares and shit. I mean, I have a chrome book. Does that work? Haha, how much money would it cost? Where do I even find online amps and all that...
Can you PLEASE PLEASE do a video on he can’t play that riff about frayed ends of sanity I can’t find one tab or sheet music that plays the main riff how James or Kirk actruly does play it
on the album they slide from the 7 down to the b flat power chord though. It's not just a palm muted low e
I've got a request. I've seen lots of guys record the multitrack intro to blackened and then reverse it to sound the like the recorded intro. What I think would sound really interesting would be to record the intro as it sounds on the record then reverse that version. Would be so keen to hear you do that!
At slower speeds it sounds very similar to a riff in The Thing That Should Not Be. Which I believe was the last song recorded for Master, so that makes sense.
I play the intro riff on the 2nd/3rd frets of the D and G strings, instead of the 7/8frets of the A/D strings. I know it's not the "correct" fingering, but I like the sound more, and it's easier to transition into the tail end of the riff.
please show us how to get that justice drums sound
What rig and set up are u using bro? Sounds awesome.
BIAS fx or BIAS AMP software for the guitar tone?
Keep in mind they played this almost five hundred times live throughout the decades, so, they did vary the exact way of playing it, they experimented with it. Their style and their groove changed a lot during the 90', not just for the drum fills, but for these riffs too! Pay attention to enough of their live performances. They don't always play exactly like the album. The boys got bored!
Could you show us how you played your version of master of puppets on AJFA? It was 1000x better then the original ;D
I can't get the lower part of the octave right, it's much too loud compared to its octave. Any tips?
I'd like to see you play Creeping Death. Idk if it should be a tutorial or anything. Maybe start a series playing all the hard bits of their songs. 🤷♀️
Those monster length fingers
Why not play the leading trill from 2nd fret D string? I never see anyone play it like that but my fingers always went back there naturally after the A# tail layup. AND THANKS FOR THIS VID!
Can you make what if st anger was in Kill em all
Can you make this a new series called "He/You can't play that"? Would be cool and I have the next riff for that series: it would be the bridge in Damage, Inc.
@@StateOfMercury hahaha I mean you can delete this comment and nobody's gonna see it😂
please explain me the Fight fire with fire riff. It has similar awkward pattern like Blackened just before verse starts. Blackened was never a problem for me, but I can't wrap my head around that riff on FFWF
ruclips.net/video/rATdZb-hHXA/видео.html
That might help
@@umerraja2655 hey, thanks!
I’ve been playing since 1997, my right hand just can’t seem to get the rhythm of the downpicking - this is the only riff that gets me.
Ride the lightning tone tutorial?
I’d like to see you Smash Fight Fire With Fire. I’ve never seen anyone play it correctly, even lately it seems like James and Kirk don’t play it the way they did earlier on. I’m not talking about the intro or the first riff, that’s easy, it’s the second riff and the chorus... thanks.
hey sorry if someone asked that question already but what is that guitar? looks custom
What model of guitar is that man
I don't know how to play ant instruments so you are speaking gibberish. Doesn't mean I don't still love your videos. Have a good one.
You lost me at “if you listen to the bass”
Its the original tab book that messed so many people up for years. Look it up, its so off, and its that riff that made me buy the book.
This. And then. T H I S!!
I don't play guitar and I will never play. But I love metallica and I watch this video.
I can play this exactly as you are playing, and in other own arrangements too, but Metallica doesn't aways follow the parts live. I've seen James playing this intentionally differently and messing this up more than once! It's about how the riff unit sounds as a whole in the end (harmonies are there, attack, tempo and tone), and not executing every single note in the right order. If the band always cared that much live (drunk as shit), they wouldn't be that great in the first place! Attitude!
Creeping death in AJFA!
You should talk about the accent change after the solo. That thing drives me insane.
What would Blackened sound like on the Black album???
Says he taught himself guitar, then goes on to thank his guitar teacher from when he was younger.
I did teach myself, I didn't get into a teacher until a couple years in. With him, I spent about 6 sessions until my dad pulled me out bc he was kind of a loser
the two C notes is what I have trouble playing.
it's a gallop over two strings, same as the riff in damage inc. just start very slow with with a metronome, i got it down in a week or so
Yup, setting up your hand for efficient note playing is critical. Dave Mustaine is a master at that, I think he calls it "spider crawling" or something like that. Definitely better!
James plays it with middle finger, however kirk plays it with his index finger
I was playing the second part completely wrong
You played 3 x C when slow and 2 x C up tempo 😆 but great video man
Yea it’s actually only 2 not 3.
