I built my own GL after watching several videos! They are massive and almost identical to what you have here. I made the shoulder 2 inches in diameter, and about 3 inches long. They turned out very well for me and saved me an extreme amount of money, I'm guessing over $2000 total with all the brackets and everything. Then I mounted these in the tree, using a fostner bit that I had purchased and machined a 7/8 diameter center to mount on the fostner to center the fostner bit as I drilled for the shoulder. Worked incredibly well. I can send you pics to see what you think if you'd reply to my post.

Try to screw in the bolt with some linseed oil. This is much easier and the slightly biocidal effect of the linseed oil protects the wood from infections.
I make strap clmps using old hot water heater and buy bolts nuts ,bolts,cables, the cables i use for cross bracing so the tress cant sway back and forth,,,i live in kansas where theres lots of wind
I have plans on doing one in the cedar trees I have on my property. Will the rust from these or drilling into the tree compromise the health of the trees?

I saw in a video highlighting your “Ewok village” of treehouses some that utilized stets of spiral staircases, I’ve been looking for information on something similar for a 4’-5’ diameter tree to go up 30’+. Are they custom or can I source them from somewhere? If you have any links or info that would be appreciated, thx
Why isn't there a pinch point for an ordinary spanner /wrench throat upmclose to the boss. Unnecessary damage to the nicely turned circular steel. Just a thought.

That's just what you need for long term corrosion protection!
The bolt was designed by an engineer as well. The bolt can be made entirely on the lathe, machining the flats for a spanner would not only weaken the part, but require additional setup in a milling machine and add costs for production.
Maybe he needs to think like an engineer. Normally you slide the bracket onto the limb, screw the hex nut at the end, and then crank on the nut with a ratchet, wrench, spanner, whatever, to drive the limb/tab into the tree. No need for the pipe wrench manhandling. No need for spanner flats.

What else should be done to help protect the tree? Does the GL cause long-term damage?
Keep it clean and it should seal up fast without big damage

How does drilling these holes affect the health of the tree?
I'm curious whether there would be any benefit to making these out of titanium or other alloys besides steel.
titanium is far to expensive!
I have plans on doing one in the cedar trees I have on my property. Will the rust from these or drilling into the tree compromise the health of the trees?

I don't believe any air impact system would have the torque required. Wouldn't be good even if you could though
