  • Ever since a year ago, the Steam Deck was a huge surprise for console and PC gamers alike, myself included. Whether it be a $4,000 gaming rig or a $2,000 laptop, The Steam Deck seems to hold it's own with compatibility, and surprisingly with performance. But Is It better than a Gaming laptop?
    Let's find out.

@@jeanfrancoisjulien8890 maybe you should try other games then, COD isn't exactly that great given it's mostly ment to milk your wallet.
Switched all my hardware to Linux even before my Steamdeck arrived, lots of te games I want to play are fairly old or have no issues playing via Proton anyways, the only major game I can't play right now is Halo Infinite, and given that's a train wreck anyway nothing of value is being missed.
Now I just gotta decide if I'm playing Hifi Rush or Fallout New Vegas today XD

What made me truly fall in love with the deck is the decky plug-ins and cryo utilities. Plug ins like vibrant deck, mixed with the cryo boost has made this thing mind blowing. I take it to work and play it more when I get home from work. Its phenomenal

    • @ChristopherToro

Dang I haven’t tried Cryo utilities yet, I’m assuming it helps with performance? (I know it helps with shaders) and that’s awesome, I take it to work and school, it should be illegal how good this tech is. Valve did an amazing job full stop.

Valve pretty much inserted themselves in the vacuum left after Sony abandoned the PlayStation vita .There is a high demand for the steam deck in the Asian market as well even in Japan.I believe that the steam deck and portable consoles like the switch can coexist both in the marketplace and in people’s homes .

Some very good points. I've not been a 'serious' gamer for a long time. Probably Dreamcast/ Xbox360/Wii/PS2 time - my PS3 didn't get that much use. I debated Steam Deck vs OneX player 2 for a while, and leaned towards the latter because I thought I'd use it partly for 'work'. I went with the SD in the end, after the reports of windows being usable, and there's a big user base to solve problems as well as Valve being more responsive, and of course it's cheap (i got the 64GB and put in a Sabrent 1TB). My big surprise was being able to play Baku Baku animal on the SD (via Batocera, and now emuDeck) - previously I thought it would only run on mednafen on a pc and thus part of my desire to have a windows functionality. Currently I play mostly Tetris LOL. I have installed windows 11 with MS office on a separate partition and it seems ok (I'm going to be super careful with updates as I think it wrecked dual boot) and it works very well with an external monitor and keyboard/ mouse. I'm half tempted to get another during the 10% sale LOL

I was never into pc games before I got my deck. Now I never play my switch and it honestly isn't too hard for a newbie to figure out how to configure to get decent settings. I love how versatile and powerful it is. My only gripe is it can be a pain configuring controls for emulated games. I still have been unable to play some wii games as I cannot get the controls configured correctly.

Even my Desktop has seen less use lately after my Deck arrived, lots of fun customization from Cryoutilities to changing boot videos, playing my steam library or emulating the Metroid Prime Trilogy and Halo CE... heck, I've even been playing Metroid Dread from the Switch, on the Deck.
My poor switch is basically collecting dust, amd my Desktop has been Running Linux for over a year now so when I do boot it up, it's still familiar to use alongside my Steamdeck.
Eager to see Valve's next generation VR Headset since my old Windows Mixed Reality headset is incompatible with Linux, that's my only major blindspot atm

Since I got my deck I have used my gaming pc so much less.I just connect my keyboard and mouse to a hub with my steam deck and play games on a 50" TV from my couch. I had never heard of Linux before the steam deck came round, but I am enjoying the experience getting games to emulate on my deck on the desktop. My pc is also ancient and some games would not play on it that my steam deck plays perfectly like Doom. Also being able to play pc games wherever I go,weather at work on my break or in the back of the car on road trips has been great.

I have a gaming PC with a ryzen 5600x and an rtx 3070 and somehow I'm enjoying this new steam deck OLED more. Sure, the desktop can crank all the settings up and get better framerates, but somehow the deck just "feels" better.
I think I'm gonna have to chock it up to less system bloat due to not having to run windows and there's just got to be some better latency there. It just feels more snappy and smoother of an experience. It also helps that this OLED panel is literally the most beautiful screen I've ever seen. I don't think my desktop will be getting much love for a while.

Honestly I feel like a budget pc offers way more and you can just use steam link or remote desktop with your phone and a telescopic controller. At this point in time I can build a pc with a r5 5600x, 5700xt, 32bg of 3200mhz cl 16 and a 1tb ssd (mostly new parts) for under $600 that should out perform the deck. For closer to $500 you could use a r5 3600 and 16gb ram and maybe a smaller ssd.

I think it's about expectations. You'll get more frustrated with a 1,000 dollar pc when something so minimal went wrong because you expect it to work like a charm without any problem because it is so expensive so why have a problem at all?
Compared to steam deck, you'll be glad that something works at all with how cheap or small that thing is. You have no expectations at all but here's the steam deck, exceeding said expectations.
Pretty sure you're gonna be more happy in the 2nd example.

Hopefully we get another steam deck so that we can finnaly be free from that mediocre buggy OS called windows. This is why i will never buy a gaming pc ever again. My last gaming pc was a nightmare. The steam deck is a console like experience. I buy all of my indies on my steam deck now and only use my swith for exclusives. My main gaming machine is of course my ps5. Hopefully linix becomes main streeam.

I just want worldwide shipping at non-insane prices, that's the final hurdle. Agreed on basically all fronts. If you want productivity or something to code on, get a Thinkpad or a Mac with whatever distro you prefer or dual boot. The price/performance is nuts.
Also PS+ just got a price increase so console monopolies are getting worse, while Steam just keeps chugging along as the best bang for your buck.

To be honest, I wouldn't say the steam deck is better than Gaming PC, But I say the steam deck is probably better than Gaming laptop in my personal opinion, Because there is some laptop and tablet monitors you can kind of turn your steam deck into gaming laptop or tablet.
Personally, I'm picking tablet monitor so I can save more space whenever the laptop's internal keyboard is useless.

Plus I can bring it over to my girlfriends and hook up my Xbox or PlayStation controllers and play two players It Takes Two, it makes it Super easy and convenient, compared to how I used to bring over my PlayStation or Xbox to do the same thing and carry all that weight around.

I don't understand what is the problem are you thinking about,
I don't know about all the rtx stuff because my laptop dasn't have rtx,
so in my opinion if you want to play a game the don't support rtx or the rtx performance is not great just closed the rtx settings,

Ah okay, I just played a ridiculous amount of games, and most of the time (with my 1060 laptop on windows 10) I’ve had comparability and crashing issues. Sometimes not right away, but within the first few hours of a game. While with the Steam deck I expect it to crash but usually when a game is playable or verified it just works.
It’s just been a more positive experience overall for me.
With newer laptops rtx is ubiquitous, but I’m assuming if you go with amd the transition will be easier.
But mostly my problem with windows is all the updates and incompatibility with drivers.

      @watercat1248 Год назад

@@ChristopherToro I have closed the window 10 update in my laptop
As for crashing and stuff like that it's happening very rarely to most it by because most of the game I play it's PC games and it's not last generation off it is mostly for 2015 or older that has already optimaze
Ther is some small isuouse in very old games that release 98 but it's usually very minimal problem that is probably why's to fixed those issues with patch or modified those setting's
And one other reason platforms like steam deck it's not the right device for my is the fact that not every game I play is steam games and I don't use my computer only for gaming I use multiple other's software like blender unity ect
