I think it's because If Simon represents the theory religion and moral beliefs and kindness, the other hunter boys represent the theory of evolution and those ideas together emphasise the contrast of civilisation vs savagery, the religion is civilisation and evolution is savagery. Which juxtaposed to each other make them seem opposite ends of the spectrum, the civilised boys being moral respectful and extremely kind and the hunters being brutal savage murderers

He has to die for sins to be forgiven and undone however here he dies to show that ironically there actions cannot be undone
They have turned a paradise representing the garden of Eden into a scar representing hell and Simon is too pure to be in hell. Through his death they unlock true sin rather than unlocking true purity/forgiveness

I think he did this to represent the fact that everyone is flawed with the inate nature to be evil. I think this whole text links in to the idea of the original sin, in the bible, where every human is born with a flawed nature to sin just as how in the text, every boy has shown savage tendencies and the want to hurt and harm others and the only exception to the original sin was Jesus as he never sinned and died totally pure and without sin just like how Simon is the only boy who hasn't shown any savage tendencies at all and has died without sin. I think Golding did this to emphasise the fact that *everyone* is born with the nature to be evil and to sin apart from Jesus himself.

Personally I believe that in the quote "The dark sky was shattered by a blue-white scar", since there is foreshadowing in Golding's use of pathetic fallacy, this is a symbolism of the destruction of the conch, the key words being "shattered", the verb that I believe was used to show the conch that shattered into "a thousand pieces" (or something like that), and "blue-white scar", "scar" being the first thing that the boys left on the island, which symbolises the destruction of something so pure and good.

I see your point but I disagree. I don't think Golding would foreshadow the destruction of something else and overlook the death of Simon in this crucial point in the text. I think he'd want to focus the readers' attention on the death of Simon rather than foreshadow something else. But that's just how I see it, you could have different views.

I think this chapter illustrates the misunderstanding that the boys had towards this Christ like figure, although he did possess the knowledge to free the other boys from evil, the other boys did not understand this message, like it says in the book of John "A light descended into the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it," instead they mistake Simon for the beast, like instead of understanding Jesus we just say "Jesus was God," a pig's head on a stick, Jesus on a cross, it symbolizes how instead of receiving Christ's true message we idolized him in a form of misleading superstition, thus were ultimately not saved by the message but we're even more led astray by the frenzy of the event

to juxtupose the idea of kindness and morals to the savage behaviour of the boys that they have been overcome by power. This shows the extent damage of reality because of the inherants of brutality. This shows how society has been damaged and cannot be fixed. it also foreshadows the death at the beging of the novel as golding uses the noan scar

I think that Golding utilises Simon to emphasise the impact of religion on society and to, in a way, embody the goodness that there is in society. Golding himself said that there are always "Christ-like" figures in society and Simon is representative of those. However, he could simply be used to juxtapose the boys' cruelty and savagery and emphasise the differences between the civilised ideology and our innate hedonistic tendencies.

maybe because he symbolises the good side of any human and he is similar to the Christ in his attitude and the way of thinking and behaving

Could the lightning scar link to the scar in the island? And if so, how?

i was thinking the same thing. the place where the plane crashed and skidded due to momentum was described as a scar. Golding described it as a scar because it's a harsh and unwelcome mark on nature- the first form of destruction created by man. Nature could be taking revenge, considering how much damage the boys have made like the fire. it could be replicating what happened at the beginning of the book and links the symbol of the throughout the book. not sure if this is a good analysis

@@lianagoldsberg8139 I would agree with you completely on the beginning of what you said but I don't agree with you on that nature is taking revenge on the boys, in fact quite the opposite. The boys are continuing to negatively effect life on the island and have now reached a point that the sky has been marked and corrupter by their behaviour. The use of biblical passages of hell here further empathizes how far these boys have adopted barbarism and savagery. Interestingly I was studying a (Jewish) biblical commentary yesterday and was discussing what happened to the fish in the Nile after the plague of blood. In short all the fish died, but the reason for it was that they had been corrupted by the Egyptians behaviour of rejecting HaShem and also their partaking in population control in the Nile river (through eating Jewish infants that were thrown into the river). Although I am relatively sure Golding had no knowledge of this it is interesting to see a similar idea in his book, how sinful human behaviour has an effect on our environment.

the 'scar' can also link to the Bible; Cain is marked by God and, as Cain commits the ultimate sin (murder), the 'scar' becomes representative of evil and intrinsic cruelty.

I think it’s because he is so innocent and through the book, he keeps his sanity. Also, I realized at the beginning when they may have killed them because they did not recognize him like the Jews and the world did not recognize him as Messiah.
