    I learned this when working on a shrimp boat. They called it a bowline, like the bow of a boat.

      Yes, I believe you are correct in it's origin and probably the original pronunciation of the bowline knot or bowline loop, definitely come from a
      Boat terminology (bow line knot, halyard knot).
