- A Forgotten Hole in the Wall Town in New Mexico - Off the highway in Southeastern New Mexico sits a forgotten little hole in the wall town that's overlooked by all the tourists heading to Roswell. Today we explore this town while sharing some history from bygone days discovered only after speaking to the locals. Find out what we learned in this episode of SightseeingSally.
About me: I grew up in a small town the Midwest. Now I drive America's backroads exploring small towns, forgotten places, local history and more!

Lake Aurthur, hmmmm. Where's the lake??🤣🤣🤣😁
Darn it, I knew I forgot something important!!! That’s the funny part, there’s NO lake. I intended to talk about that in the video and totally forgot 🤦🏼♀️ thanks for bringing this up!
I was going to ask the same thing! lol
@@SightseeingSally perhaps that was a future project for the town, build a lake 😁
Can't believe I didn't even think of that question! LOL I came to the comments to ask if the town has good internet & what is the town's water source/supply like.
Urban legend around here says that Canadian geese landed in the lake during their migration lake froze overnight and the geese took it with them
Baptists believe in dunking. They don't sprinkle and that's why it's larger and built in.
Great video. I'm from North Carolina but I spent years in New Mexico, mostly in the north central parts but I made forays into some areas you've been investing. That was forty years ago, but it's a blast to see it all again, even if it is on a phone. Thanks for all you're doing! I'm having a ball!
I used to go there when I was stationed at Walker AFB in Roswell. Brings back many memories. I was there in the early 1960's.
Great job
I agree too! Kids need to play!
My Grandfather, Joseph Kersey Funk, was mayor of LA some time ago. Him and my Grandma lived next door to the First Baptist Church and we spent lots of time visiting them from Artesia. He was awarded the Carnegie Hero Medal after running into a burning building to save a child but wasn't able. Came out with only his boots and belt on with sever burns over his entire body. Lived to raise 8 kids, my Aunts and Uncles. There's an old Minute Man Missile east of town as well as the Pecos River. Near the bridge there's one of those old hand trolleys on a cable across the river. We used to ride it and have to pull ourselves back to get off. There's dumb waiters in those two old beautiful houses at the end of the video and a sink hole behind one that threatened to swallow ii a long time ago. Really enjoy your vids of NM since I have been to all the towns you have visited and you schooled me but there is so much more you missed and hopefully you will come back someday and take a few different byways. Lots of history here.
Love these stories. Nobody tells em like you Sally. Great way to spend an early Sunday morning.
Sally, you guys need to visit Chaco Canyon in northern New Mexico. It's not just a ghost town, it's a ghost town thousands of years old and is in fact a lost civilization!
Nice video! Lake Arthur was served by the former Santa Fe Railway now BNSF, Final run of the remaining passenger trains between Clovis and Carlsbad, was made on April 9, 1968.
good vidieo
Grrrreat!
This was good.
There once used to be a lake in Lake Arthur back in the 1800s
It would be cool to renovate that old church I bet it has awesome energy
I remember going through there as a kid on our way to Lovington New Mexico. It was different place then. Than you for sharing your day.😊😊
you are what we call here in new zealand a hard case..great stuff.. kiwi fan
Thanks! Glad there is such a thing as Google. Otherwise I would have thought you meant I was a hard core chick just outta jail 😂
We will be hitting the road in a few days for New Mexico and because of your videos, we'll be making a ton of tops to see what we never knew was there. 32 years of visiting New Mexico and I am stunned by all the neat places I never paid attention to. Beginning this trip our main goal is to take the back roads and discover new things !!
Look up Pie Town. And, yes, they have pie.
Another wonderful video. Thank you! Safe travels going home❤!
Love your show ...a blessing
from the"Bishop of Las Cruces" come and see us !
Sir Wm. Dunn , Knight of Maita
Sorry to hear about your lack of coffee.
Coffee does make an instant human.
The burnt down house with the chimney still standing was a beautiful old house that was never lived in my entire childhood there. It was passed down to Mickey from family over the years and was set on fired over locals that did not like him after he passed away.
Great job again. And I will make a note to hide all old gas pumps from Marty's view. ;-)

Belen, New Mexico U.S.A.
The Last Frontier in the Lower 48. ;-)
Perfect! 😂 and thank you!
Marty and Sally,Love your videos.I like seeing the small towns.Very sad they are dying.Keep up good work
I like getting up early watching the sunrise (yes early) and taking a brisk walk, but coffee first please. 🌸V
There's still an old cemetery east of town with graves from the 1800s.
😢I miss, New Mexico. Lived in Albuquerque, 20 years. Lived also, in Laguna and Paguate. The Sandia Moutains are so pretty.
Great video.... of course. The dogs are saying WE LOVE YOU SSS. Thank you for taking us along. I sure look fwd to your youtubes. DONT Forget folks, click that share button above. This channel deserves to be MUCH larger. Oh, Hi Marty.
So quiet and peaceful.
Don't mind when you blab
The raised up font is common in catholic type churches with priests. In the floor, pretty common with baptist, methodist etc
Geeeez ...... it's amazing the history of this truly forgotten town
I remember stopping at little gas stations like that derelict one, when we would go to see my grandparents that lived in Georgia. We took a lot of two-lane highways. When we stopped at a gas station, my mom would have my dad check out the bathrooms first, if they were dirty, on to the next station in search of the, elusive, clean bathrooms.
Baptists baptize fully body dunk - so it is more like a small pool. Catholics use the small basin that you pictured.
Another place for my wife and I to investigate if we get over that way…
Thanks for spending some time here in New Mexico.
That old school building hasn't been used since the early 1980s.
I'm from Lake Arthur. Those two fires that you said weren't related...they were related. The burnt down house with the chimney still standing was owned by Mickey and the house burned down across the street was were he lived. Both houses were burned down out of malaise by some locals.
no mention of the pecos diamonds !!
we have gas pumps from the 50,s and 60,s in vermont !
I bet there are a lot of interesting small towns along Highway 2. That's so cool you were able to spend time with local couple and making other friends. Birds singing away is a beautiful sound. The history with Pat Garrett and John Chisum. That's interesting about the Baptist Church and the baptismal being into the floor. The church I grew up in had the same feature. Oops my phone is dying and have to plug in so can't finish my remarks.
Carlsbad Caverns is a good place to visit.
Nice video Sally you guys be careful going home ✌️
Thanks Duane! Hopefully we don’t get caught up in any snow along the way. I’ve seen several snow sightings in Wisconsin and it would be fine with me if we could avoid that lol🥶😜
The story around here is there were artesian wells which were allowed to run and the water ran to the east of town and formed a 'lake'.
Good video Sally. I see Mocha hasn't gotten any new clothes yet.😅
Not yet! 😂 and thanks Jack
Thank you tri-s, that was wonderful!
What an awesome place!
Great video!! 🙂👍❤️
It really is! Thank you Bonnie 😊

You're welcome! 🌹
Lovely little town. Thank you for showing it to us.
I grew up in lake Arthur there is no lake. Just a river
Your channel has the best documented videos of local history that I know. A delight to follow every time.
Thank you for another well done video.
I use to live in a forgotten little town in NM population 55 when I lived there and had a Bar and a Cafe. The Cafe closed and a year later the Bar closed and now it's a population of 35. We jokingly called ourselves dirt farmers because we had 5 acres of dirt and 1 small dead tree
Marty .....just think....if you get one of those gas pumps and put it in the camper you could fill up the truck any time you need gas
Hahaha don’t give him any ideas now
Why did the both churches closed? Break's my heart. Another outstanding video thank you. Be careful on your travels. Looking forward to your next video.
are yall from wisconsin? we are new subscriber here also from wisconsin
Oh my.. I am from Artesia, (75 years old now) and my grandmother (who raised me) was a school teacher. According to history she traveled the state and helped organize the state school system. Her family was in Belen and the family was involved in the railroad and her dad owned the hotel... My grandmother traveled to Lake Arthur to help teach .. and I have been in both the school and Baptist church..
I lived in lake Arthur in 1995 for a while in a trailer by d main highway tat interests d town before heading to hagerman i remember playing baseball in tat field lol all those towns r like Ghost Towns know also outside d towns in d desert there alot of abandoned Atlas missile silos from d cold war there even one outside hagerman to
I wonder how many times that marker has been crashed into.
I wondered that too!
Me three!
Remember, “first we drinks the coffee, then, we do the things.”
Thanks. I'm also from WI, the rural northern portion, so I'm used to old, small, mining and logging towns with old one-room schools along with mill ponds or rivers. Having lived for a couple of years in extreme SE AZ and seen a fair amount of southern NM, there's much down there in terms of sizeable communities except for the Los Cruces and Alamagordo areas. But it's interesting to the Southwest's variation of small town evolution in the 21st century.
A "Baptist" baptism is a fully submergible pool.
I am guess nobody told you that nm2 at one time it us 285 that when most was booming when they move the hight all the tourists went away.
Baptist don't sprinkle, they dunk you😊.
To be baptized in the the Baptist denomination your submerged and emerging from the water your reborn in Christ.
Did you make sure Marty wasn't abducted in Roswell? Lake Arthur had a population of 381 in 2021
lol, I just noticed a guy casually drive by with advertisement on his white truck, maybe possibly hoping to get some free advertising?
Wow! Really Cool 😎 video. 👍
My dad is from lake aurthur my dad tall me he want to the old school
denominations that believe in imersion have baptismal fonts.altho many people like a river or the ocean'
What happened to the lake??
Mocha was a good girl! Arrooooo. You should have an Amazon wishlist for her.
I really enjoy your videos Sally and Marty is pretty cool too. When I get older I want to make video's just like yours. It's a great adventure. But until then, I'm going to keep making the swervy ones. 😃 #swervycrew Ken
Is this the same town that had that police chief selling peace officer certs to celebrities?
Wikipedia says the 2020 census counted 378 people in Lake Arthur.
You did not mention that there are several" bottomless lakes" located in the area between Roswell and Lake Arthur.. Not really bottomless .. but there is quite a bit of folklore about the "lakes".. and there is a Bottomless Lake State Park about 20 miles north of Lake Arthur closer to Roswell..
Baptist's get full body emersion and they don't baptize babies. So their baptismal would be as big as a horse trough. I believe the one you showed was a Catholic baptismal which is BIG difference from Baptists in their belief regarding Baptism. (I attended both religions (plus others) when I was younger. Most protestant churches believe that you need to be of a cognitive age to receive baptism. There are usually classes or counseling before you can get baptized in any protestant type church.
“People of the Way”. If you will read the boob of Acts, it will tell you what “the Way is. Early Christians.
I don't understand.
The sun is up. You are up and out there, and no one has had coffee yet? What the hell is wrong?
My old stomping grounds. I knew the Radcliff's, the Clements most of which i believe, up and left for greener pastures. You do a great job bringing your tales out. Nice work. However, let me open your eyes a little. Baptist's don't have fonts. They baptize by submergence. You take the dunk. You can't wash your sins away with a sprinkle, and it represents the death, burial, and resurrection of my Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. So that little girl probably liked swimming. Especially in them hot summer days. Y'all be blessed by the Best! and we'll see yu again.
Thanks Richard, I shouldn’t have made that assumption and glad you clarified it.
@@SightseeingSally All good. Love y'all. I wonder ,is the church for sale? Heard Black Sabbath needed a new place to jam. A nice quiet place like that, they might just be interested.🙂 Yee-Haa and Yowzer!!
Richard, Organized Religion is a Apostate Tax free Corporation, I.e. just a business opportunity to make a quick buck off of the Sheeple, don’t you know this? Wow, you really should, just sad! You don’t know anything about the Bible, just like Catholics, hahaha. Only the nice parts, hehehe.
@@richardbeee You know nothing about Black Sabbath, you fool! In fact, you don’t know much at all, do you?? Haha
M-A-R-T-Y!
Bro I live here😂😂
What was wrong with the part of town that the house came from ?
If it were not for people getting Social Security money every month many towns across America would have died a long time ago.
Wow that was the sparsest town I've ever seen.
Sparsest?
🤔
🤔
Anyway, it looked kinda thin.
Thanks Sally, thanks Marty!
Scratch Mocha on the head for me!
Stayin tuned!
🤠👍
I did. Now Mocha wants a treat lol
Flower's Home 2.0.
Thank you but can you het another hat ?
No it’s my favorite
What part of Wisconsin is home??
Northeastern or as we call it “up north”
@@SightseeingSally I worked in Racine Ws way back in the ‘70’s …
Regarding that church that puts that kind of emphasis on water baptism, constitutes a heresy. It ended with John the Baptist and so carrying on that "work" is idol worship. No wonder that church was shut down.
I'm a Baptist, and you are wrong!Better dust off your Bible.Water Baptism a sign of obedience
@@paulcooper7946 So a believer in Christ is not saved unless he gets baptized with water? Show me the passage that says that.
