Gary Holt states:
"As we have finally come to the day of Persona Non Grata’s release, something we’ve been eagerly awaiting for what seems like an eternity. We are pleased to share one last lyric video with you, my personal favorite song on the album, ‘Prescribing Horror’. A little tale of motherhood and a drug, and what happens when greed comes before life and safety. The story of Thalidomide.”

EXODUS "PRESCRIBING HORROR" LYRICS
Lyrics and music: Gary Holt
Discarded, deformed
babies of the chemical age
Mutated, some unborn
dying in their fetal cage
On the day of the nativity in ‘56
comes a child forsaken
The first of a hundred thousand,
cursed by a drug they’d taken
Chorus
Condemned to a life unkind
as they suffered in silence
The Hell of Thalidomide
all in the name of science
A mother’s ruin
all for another’s greed
Prescribing horror and sorrow when they breed
Melody Gary
Miscarriage, disparage
live a life of anguish
Midwives were taking lives
so the child it would not languish
Suffocating newborn daughters and sons
for their malformations
Given toxic poison
that twisted a generation
Repeat chorus
First created in the past
as an antidote for Sarin gas
Created in camps of death
what price a pound of flesh?
Limbless, eyeless
all organs displaced
They made money hand over fist
by selling this toxic waste
Repeat chorus

This is darker than all death metal gore put together. This is reality, and it is haunting and gut-wrenching. The baby's cry at the end seals this bone-chilling story.
Over time Exodus is emerging as my favourite thrash band, as they remain vocal on a lot of modern day issues, and they keep getting sharper.
100%! Exodus got me into Thrash and metal as a whole they're my absolute favorite. This song hit me throughout and then the end sent chills down my spine and just hit me in a way I haven't before when it comes to a song about real world problems. They keep putting out freaking bangers. Exodus deserves to headline big festivals. Exodus at night at a festival like Hellfest or Wacken would be so freaking insane.
Yea this shit really happened which alone is chilling
Should be the big 5
60 year olds have a lot of experience....and music is their outlet.
It's called gore metal not death metal gore
This is seriously one of the best Exodus songs ever!
Yes...one of the best song.i love it too
Yes indeed!
Trash metal fan
right!
'Children of a Worthless God' is my favourite Exodus song, especially the live version at Wacken. Anyway keep on rocking out people of RUclips! 🔥🤘🙌👍👏👊🎶🔥
Tom Hunting and Gary Holt are national treasures.
Yessss
That's for sure !!!!! Can't wait for next Saturday night 🤘🤘
Absolutely. So you better take good care of them over there 😁
Hunting one of the most underrated drummers in history,
Not national, universal treasures.
Gary. This is exactly what we need. holy shit.
Steve's vocals are fucking ruthless 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Dude this song is heavy
Like, HEAVY
Dude…..Like….I fucking cried!! So good, but sooooooo HEAVY!!!!!!!!
Try being a Thalidomide Survivor listening to it!
I knew a guy with deformed hands, he was awesome! RIP.
I am one and even I cry most every day for the others.
EXODUS IS BACK! Wait they never went away in the first place. Been grinding since 1980’ Bay Area’s First Thrash metal band!!
But they did go away. They broke up after the Force of Habit tour, and with the exception of a few shows here and there, never released another studio album for 12 years.
🤘👹🤘
@@Gregbaltzer -That Force of Habit album should've made them break-up, lolol- that album was weaker one.
@@Gregbaltzer it was a figure of speech, & Gary never let Exodus really die, all bands have a down period if around long enough, but tech you are right.
@@TheArmchairgm Not saying it wasn't weaker, but it was still good. I prefer it over any of the newer albums, just not the older albums.
Darkest song Exodus has ever done. Absolutely bone chilling with the atmosphere, baby crying at the end and everything.
That, and Class Dismissed
Metal. It's supposed to be angry and uncomfortable. This song is like if Evisceration Plague and Sanitarium had the same nightmare.
It's not supposed to be anything. It can also be fun, like Toxic Waltz.
The baby's cry at the end just broke my heart. This was hard.
That left an unsettling feeling...
With a toddler of my own, it hurt me as well. She was over 10 weeks premature, I couldn't recall the number of shots and drugs the doctors gave my wife. Thankfully, they all did what they were supposed to, and my Angelica is perfectly healthy.
This is a grim reminder of how different that story could be, and how easily. There is supposed to be a sacred trust with your doctor, especially in that vulnerable moment, and to know the utter betrayal of that trust, and what it lead to is, as you said, heartbreaking.
This was a very moving piece
Added that uncomfortable darkness to it. The riff and melody is on point thou.
This song was hard to listen too.
What a great track; groovy, great production and Zetro at his best! Can't wait for the album!
Jesus, man. This is a rarely-talked-about story as it is, but I have never imagined you guys doing your take on it. So sad, so infuriating, thanks for the track! Matters like these need to be talked about more, and also, you are still musical geniuses!
Well said Dude.
Fouchi dreams of this
Same shit happening in 2022 but under a different name and with different outcomes. Big pharma sure loves selling fear for profit
I work in Pharma and this case is almost always part of our annual training (since it was what (rightly) brought-in most of the regulation we have today).
@@fieldofpads Very reassuring to hear (to say the least) that modern pharma cares about this and brings it up in trainings!
My favorite song. Great lyrics, about a nightmare that was real. Tom Hunting and Gary Holt are the highlights of this new album.
All too real for some of us.
I love exodus but zetro Is too much on this one I cant really say why. I loved tempo and blood in blood out but he sounds so fucking bad in this one I cant get over it.
@@nickdavis8375 you have no idea what your talking about lmao at you, you can't even explain why you think he sounds terrible. Zetro has always been their best singer and he sounds just as good as ever on every track from their new album 🤠
So happy to hear Zetro back with Exodus again! Great vocals!
LOL.
Duke was amazing live tho
@@atgimm2090 So was Michael Jackson. Your point?
Exodus has had three freaking amazing vocalists. Dukes was fantastic and Zetro is the biggest reason Exodus still goes. Maybe in the future we can get Dukes and Zetro doing an Exodus song together!!
@@ddskreamer Wtf does this comment even mean?
This might be one of the most important songs Exodus ever wrote about. Thalidomide that's some scary shit. The babies crying at the end gives me chills every time
Right this and Arch Enemy Cruelty without Beauty are prob one of the best songs relating to human cruelty, also Nuclear Assault Critical Mass
The best song in the new album. Good job Exodus, delivered
Just received my copy today. I like the theological perspective of this album. Fits perfectly with "the times". And Gary's tone... crushing, as always. Love Zetro's new vocal tricks as well.
awesome dark song ... the exodus strikes where it hurts the most......pure horror .this is stronger than all death metal bands together.fantastic sound .... old school thrash metal at its best
It's very similar subject matter to the Death song Living Monstrosity.
Perfect analysis!!
What a great fucking song!
Great atmospheric song! Your most menacing track since Nanking (2010)!!!
His voice keeps getting better with age!
I can't be the only one hearing it but the start of this track reminds me of the outro to "Forward March" off "Tempo of the Damned". This seems like a part 2 to that song in some ways.
That is one nasty song mate. Yeah forward march ends like this. This should be Part 2 of that one.
No you're not the only one damn good ear sounds old skool
Indeed. Good Ear.
Yeah.
Brutal!!!
Yeah I thought the same
The outro to this song is so damn creepy!! But yet fits the vibe of the song. Pure musical genius!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🍻
OMG!!! I love this song!! This song has one of the coolest heaviest riff! Can't get enough of it. I am going to learn this song right now! Wow!!!! The video was scary for me and so is the riff and the singing!! The baby crying at the end made it even more eerie! Can't wait to learn this song!!
Sick song, Exodus are on the top of their game.
Horrors in the name of science, lyrics on point.
Greed I think had a bigger role in the tragedy than just science. I say this as a Thalidomide Survivor
@@markchorlton60 if you listen to all the lyrics it describes greed being the main driver of the issue, but science was the concept that was used to justify the administration of thalidomide.
@@Shamelesspatriot1776 you are correct. One of the guitarists with the band identified greed as one of the main topics of the song.
It comes again.
@@milenpenev1362 Sorry the population doesn't want a virus like anti vaxxers do. Those heart attacks? Many athletes are still told 'you can' medically. 'nooooo vaccine's, 🐑le you are.
In this one Zetro sounds really good.
I'm loving how crankable this album is because it's not compressed and brickwalled to death. It sounds even more dynamic than some of the '80s albums.
that's a bold statement
@@bestiaonthedrums You're goddamn right it is.
I guarantee there is more compression than you think. It's just mixing equipment has come a long long way since the 80s.
@@dudarino666 yeah the tech is great, you can make shit real loud, riiight, if only the music was as good as back then.
Popular ask Reddit the other day was " why are so many people cynical about the medical industry?"
Lol they said it right there, "industry"
SIK AF. EXODUS GUT IT CHUGIN. BY FAR THE BEST METAL BAND ALIVE TODAY. FACTS
Spoken by an obvious huge Exodus fan but c'mon man, BESt band lol. There are literally thousands of bands in this genre alone cranking out great music lololilolo.
Love their slower tempo songs!!!!
Like Nanking or Democide. Great slowly dark songs.
Can someone please explain to me why does this kind of a masterpiece is not #1 somewhere? .. are people really that blind to music ?!?! let alone the lyrics?? FFFFFFUUUDGGGGGGG!!! 😵💫
Exodus unfortunately doesn't get the playtime the Big 4 gets or most other bands get. I think they would have been Big 4 if they had so much more popularity. CONSITANTY GOOD albums
This is pure horror. Heavy and Crushing 🤯🔥
Even sadder fda approved this drug in 1997
So is this what happened to the babies on Bonded by Blood?
and people line up to get their latest injection crazy It was approved in the United States in 1998 for use as a treatment for cancer.[3] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.[8] It is available as a generic medication.
First Halloween and everyone invited us into their home. Why? They wanted to see my birth defects up close. Didn't get any candy because I couldn't keep the bag of candy from dragging and it broke. Was made to leave it on the side walk. First watching of Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer and I knew what my life was going to be like especially going to school. Pretty close to it! Didn't want to start school because I'd already learned what kids will do to me. The mocking, bullying, being beat on at times, left out, time lost to surgeries, always an outsider even with friends so many times. So cold all my life because of so much missing muscles and no one understood it. Rude comments. Still it's been better for me than most. There's always someone worse off. Except for some of the Survivors. "US Thalidomide Survivors" - we do exist. Many more than told. Be bold and speak out! Not everyone has somebody in life. Some Thalidomiders have become all alone in recent decades. They need help! In the USA just from 2006 to 2016 one big pharma profitted $2.4 billion from thalidomide. US Thalidomide Survivors have watched 3 times now since 2010 Canadian Thalidomid Survivors in small numbers enter the USA, file suit and win compensations within 2 year periods while our courts keep tossing our cases out. US Thalidomiders are illegals in our own nation. International Law requires the US pharmas to pay Thalidomiders of foreign nations that got their damages from US production. The so-called greatest nation still doesn't even recognize we were born but for a few. PHARMA The Movie may help. Not holdingh my breath given what I know.
One of the darkest songs of the entire metal genre. Genius!
Exodus is my favorite band not only because of the cutting vocals, adrenaline-pumping drums, skull-rocking bass and guitar with a crunch you can chip a tooth on -- but because the lyrics push all of that to the next level.
This song is a perfect example of why Exodus are the Kings of Metal in my book! Long live Exodus!
The entire album is major krankage. Best in many long years for Exodus. This song physically gives me the chills. Zetro just came back in a major way. Fuckin' rulz.
Story is really sad...on the other side the music is dope...July 22th in Wiesbaden Germany, I can' t wait to See You live again in Germany! 😊💪 With Heathen, so this will be really great
yeesss, tight drums, heavy riffs, nasty vocals. Exodus as we know and love it, this piece a classic already!
Not-so-fun fact... Thalidomide: different isomers caused the defects.
Edit: Modern day prescription horrors: Anti-depressants/anti-anxiety drugs meant to be used on short term (3 months) are prescribed for life.
Last edit... for now... I promise. Given the age of this band, yes, this _IS_ in their "current events" field. Glad they covered it. Glad I hit on it via a "metal" playlist.
I love how the guitarist has that sick sound from Exhibit B: The Human Condition from 2010! 🤘
If only more Metal bands had that sound, their level of brutality would be adored by many!!!
This song gives me the creeps after doing a deep dive into what they're talking about in this song, genuinely disturbing. But the music is awesome though
As an identical twin my favourite album was Bonded by blood but it's all amazing
Excellent video, and it targets a very relevant topic. Please do your due diligence and look this up, folks! This shit is really happening.
Gary Holt Denouncing past events that were forgotten by human kind just like he did on the song NANKIN
I love their music as usual .......but not this vocalist
Leave it to metal music to expose the horrors of mankind
The first time I even heard about Thalidomide was in a Slipknot lyric song Left Behind! 😂
Same
Playing in the almighty Slayer definitely influenced this overall sound of this song.
great song .wish it had a different vocalist .just can't get into him .
I agree.who is the second singer? lower voice, better. sounds like Max Cavallero
One of the best tracks on the album, it has this evil vibe throughout that is just plain sinister. Very much reminds me of a Slayer doomy track like Dead Skin mask and Architect of Pain from the very same Exodus. Zetro's vocals might be the best on here, the man wants to haunt us in our nightmares , the baby cry at the end is just disturbing
This song makes me want to learn stuff. To the library!!!!
Here’s a video about the hidden American thalidomide victims, now survivors in their 60s: ruclips.net/video/3bLH1ENANLo/видео.html
Brutales los reyes del thrash metal
It's impossible not to think about a "big 5", instead of "big 4"!
This song is more black and more scary than all of the songs from the black and death metal scene combimed.
*You react tremendously with your music to the Nanking massacre, the Thalidomide drug, and many other inhumane events. I appreciate you and expect you to show the same reaction to the people of Gaza who are being brutally murdered right now. Israel does this in the name of religion to strengthen its dominance in the Middle East. And the whole world not only watches this, but also supports Israel. Another big black mark on world history... Shame on us if we don't show which side we are on while we witness this*
The song speaks the truth
This song sounds very Slayer-ish and it makes me wonder if this could have been one of the songs that Gary tried to present to Tom Araya when he was still playing with Slayer. Either way it's a badass song.
This song is brutal and sad
Wonderful song and an absolutely awesome music video! Exodus is a great group! One of the best in the world!
This is f'kin awesome man.
Like a fine wine,Exodus just keeps getting better with age🤘🤘🤘🤘
That is a sordid song.
...
Love it ! 🤟🏻
Reminds me of Nanking from Act 2. Amazing song about a horrific subject.
Great Band / Great Album.
My favourite from Persona Non Grata, fucking amazing song
Who is the author of the music in "The Fires of Division"? Lee Altus, right?
Thalidomide was originally invented as a sedative, but became used for other things because it essentially worked as a painkiller. It was of course, used as something for pregnancy nausea and pain
..."what price a pound of flesh?"
That's boiling up some emotion I can't quite analyse right at this moment...
Top fookin song though! 🤟
Nanking!
This is also my favorite track from the new album
Holy Shit this is fucking Heavy 🔥🔥
I love this song.very good sound of drumming...guitars and bass.and vocal....very good track.powerfull.i love it.

Best album in 2021. I have never been a big Exodus fan, but this album is the shit.
New Master of Puppets imo. We needed this.
I will be at the Little Rock show. This is going to be awesome.
A perfect example of why the corporate death penalty should be enforced.
Saw them Last Monday with Death Angel and Testament. When they played this the crowd went nuts. They baby crying at the end was almost silence from the crowd. Gary and Lee are guitar beasts! Even saw Lee with Heathen at the Stone SF many years ago.
Trust the science
EXODUS....please get rid of your drum triggers....There's no definition and it makes you sound like every other band.
Future version will be “Mandated horror”
It feels refreshing and reassuring at the same time that there are still some bands alive and kicking, not trying too hard to sound different and yet manage to capture your attention. Thank you for not changing with time. Cheers 🤘🏻
Wicked! 🤟⚡⚡🤟Gary Holt, you are a riff MONSTER! WORLDS BEST RIGHT THERE!
