So many great black rock acts that could’ve been on BET in the 2000s and even 2010s. But none of them ever came across the airways. I think black people are more than just rap, r&b, or hip hop. Black people created blues, rock n roll, and laid blueprints for so many other music genres that are crucial for underground and mainstream music scenes today. I just think it’s a shame that this channel, that could’ve been a way for black people to be more clearly represented as far as media and music, was relegated to such stereotypical ideas.
Absolutely! They try putting all of us into a BOX. In reality though there's a whole lot of great White, Black & Hispanic Musicians in general that not only never got the proper exposure BUT THAT GOT SURPRESSED from us being able to enjoy their talents & bright exposed to their existence. If your not playing ball , pushing the agenda they instruct you too & playing the shit tell you too play down to dressing & acting the ways they want too. Thank you for this INSIGHTFUL commentary on the inner workings of BET and what has spiraled RAP music down. I remember when RAP began and when black women were portrayed as BEAUTIFUL and talented
TechLady BET is owned by a white guy, so of course they're just pushing a violent lifestyle as cool to help feed the prison industrial complex! It's not about promoting "black is beautiful" or anything of the sort anymore! It's become all about making money off of the youth (usually minorities of course) through trying to turn them into criminals! And as every study has shown, once you get them into the prison system, the chances of their returning to jail upon release, within months even, are pathetically high!
Yes, you hit the nail on the head. I guess BET used black people to develop it's empire and then sold the black community on the slave block. A vicious cycle.
RyanH321 The founder of BET was black his name is Robert Johnson, and his ex-wife was the vice president for years. But, he started it as a money maker, and didn't have black people's interest at heart. He sold it to Viacom in 2000, which currently owns BET.
@@Snide01Look at how black men diss black women in the media today. That is why that comment was made years ago. Their hate and disrespect for black women gets worse each year.
Too many of us know what's going on while things are getting worst. Those that are in the know, stop being a coward and let your voice be heard. Thank you for the message my brother.
I completely agree with you about the portrayal of women in ''black'' media in The USA. From the perspective of a mixed race woman, I assure you, the issues with skin colour and women make it much harder for us as well. Because of exactly what you are describing, there is a perception that ''lighter skinned'' women have it easier, which actually ends up meaning, as a mixed race woman, you have it much harder. If everyone thinks you are somehow reaping advantage from your lightness of skin (as is the case in The US because of its racial history) it puts a serious target on your back. I wasnt born or raised in The US and it took my very black best friend at college when I went to America to explain to me some of the phenomenon and bad treatment I was getting from black women in The US. I had never experienced such issues with women back home. In fact, I didnt even know racism existed coming from an interracial relationship, until I got to The US. You can see Colourism in black music videos, magazines, etc. And as a mixed race person, you are quite alone with it (given how few of us there are) because some black people just hate you and white people just want as far away from the topic or anyone who ends up at the center of it as they possibly can get. America's race issues are , apparently, very far from over. And the fact that BET came out of Washington DC ought to tell you a bit about who might be at least helping to set its agenda. PS- But I do have to ask, why would it be necessary for Eve to ''look like a sex symbol'' for her to get cross over play to MTV? Exactly. The reason there are no serious female MC's is because being hard and battling and all of that is diametrically opposed to being ''sexy''. Women are meant to be the spoils of war. It's just another modern form of pervasive sexism. It's why Da Brat did that sexy make over, even though she actually is a capable studio MC, and tried to change her image, before going back to being herself. It's because the image of a woman with talent who isnt super sexy and showing her tits and ass is of no use to mainstream media, regardless of how talented she is. You were right. You knew how to play the game.
loving this video. to say that you are articulate would be an understatement. I work for a company that plays the same mental games. It's sad to watch others that are blind to it. I'm doing my best to find a new job. I hate living under duress. 😊
