I’m extremely doubtful about this. I think the current alt system from a UI perspective is flawed enough, but using it to create submenus for completely unrelated characters is a whole other issue.
I think a few make sense like Peachette with Toadette, Capitan Toad with Toad, Funky Kong with Donkey Kong, and other. It's just so odd we don't have all the original characters in the game including DK Jr, Paratroopa, and ROB.
Personally I think there's a chance they just add a whole other column to the right and we just get 4 more slots (8 characters total). It honestly makes a bit more sense to me than the compression of characters. But either way I will be praying for King Bob-omb and Nabbit (and coping for ROB).
I hope so too it just makes so much sense, maybe they could add some more customizable vehicles and characters like rob had a really funny car in ds I really wanna use in mk8

ANYTHING is possible. However, I do believe we would be EXTREMELY lucky now to get more than what they’ve already extended it beyond. After wave 6 drops too, it’s notable that we would have 50 characters total. That’s a nice round total. I think this is why they added two more in general.
Getting 3 characters in wave 5 was a really weird play that symbolized something more, my guess was a couple of alts but yea even then no one saw more characters getting added
i think Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach and Peachette should definitely become skins, since we know from storyline that they are just power ups and not different characters, so we can put Diddy Kong and Funky Kong in the final 2 slots, and we can add Pauline where Tanooki Mario was, and Dixie Kong could be added in Cat Peach slot, after that they could add a new 6 character colum with King Bob-omb, Hammer bro, Honey Queen and the others 3(my dream would be Ninja, White Mage and Black Wizard but nintendo completely forgot about them but IT WOULD BE SUCH A COOL IDEA)

Not too sure if we would just get 8 characters in this final wave or they just drop a character or 2 periodically after wave 6 but they should have the resources to give us all the characters at once, it’s just if they actually want to or pad them out to keep the game relevant until the next console. This is a hot take but personally I am hoping for a BCP2 for 8 or even 12 more battle courses since the content is so disproportion, with all of these tracks to race on its like why even bother with battle mode even though that was the original selling point of MK8DX. However on the other hand Nintendo could squeeze out 6 more cups if they really wanted to and give us the rest of the fan favorite courses we are missing like Airship Fortress, Toad’s Factory, etc. but I think costumes and new kart parts are in MK9 and are just out of reach to make it into MK8DX.

Im confused with the alt situation, as a guy said below, Nintendo wants their costumers to see the new content, putting them as alts would cofuse some people and I dont think they're going to treat Funky Kong as a minor character alt, that would be such a disrespect. So I think another column will be present
Funky Kong likely isn’t an alt, as we see Donkey Kong separate from him in the teaser! It’d also just be a bad decision to make any of them alts, as they are paid DLC, you want your customers to know what they’re buying and be able to see everything so the prospect of a purchase is more tantalizing. They show characters in order of where they wind up on the roster, so Diddy should be on the Koopaling row, Funky on the guest stars, and then Pauline and Peachette in that order on the top row!
I don't think nintendo will make alts. In the original Mario Kart 8, both male and female Villagers use to share one slot. In deluxe, each of them got their own slot. Also, I don't like the idea of characters being alts of other characters. Example; Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong are two different characters and don't deserve to share a slot. Hammer bro with his other variants makes more sence.

More than likely, they're just moving over Metal Mario, Gold Mario & Pink Gold Peach to becoming actual alts for Mario & Peach respectively thus we're getting four characters in total and why said rival bug happened. That isn't too crazy since literally those three are just alts with only different weight attributes and their voices are warble-y. That's it. Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Dry Bowser, and Peachette at least have an excuse somewhat as they have different animations for said characters even if they're partially based on an already-exisiting character.

I'm not so certain we will be getting more characters added in the DLC, for which I'm also doubtful of since this is the final wave with 4 characters already being announced. The best they can do is to make a 50 squared-grid to place all of the racers (without having to stack one or two characters) together with no new additions to evenly make the grid. It's easier that way, tbh. I'm more than content with just Wave 6 coming in and not receive anymore DLC after that.
The whole alt thing makes absolutely no sense. a whole bunch of these characters are way too different from whoever you assigned them to be the alt of. plus, i don’t know how combining characters would work since every single character have different stats from each other (cat peach and regular peach are entirely different stats wise.) *IF* they were to add a whole new row and were left with 6 slots left, i think the characters from Tour have the highest chance in making it into the roster since that game will most likely shut down in the future. Considering they’re adding all the tour stages into the game to preserve them, it’s not entirely strange for them to do the same for the characters there.

I feel this multiple alt theory of yours is a tad too messy in my opinion. If Nintendo does add more characters, I think they'd just add a new column to the right and fill it with most of the remaining characters from Tour for easier access. Besides maybe Peachette, Para Troopa, and Captain Toad I don't think any character you mentioned would fit as an alt because they are unique enough in their own right to have their own slot. While I'd love to be wrong, I think the new characters that was shown in the sneak peek trailer is all that we're getting.
