I've been sewing since 1957 and never once did it enter my mind that I could do anything with sweaters! I have altered one or two now, and it's so much fun. I really like the way you give teaching style instructions. I love sewing, but there is a special place in my heart for upcycling from thrift store finds.
I love the twin needle effect!! Thank you for showing that. I was holding my breath to see how you pivot with two needles. Lovely tunic style sweater, a nice layering piece. You are so calm when sewing. Mine usually requires more swearing.
I just did a sweater up cycling that was inspired by your videos. I have a cozy solid color pullover that the sleeves were too short. I found a skein of multicolored yarn at the thrift store (for fifty cents!) that had the sweater color. After removing the narrow knit cuff, I crocheted new longer cuffs. I then steeked the sweater and made it a cardigan and added a crocheted band. Since I still had some yarn left I made a patch pocket to tie it all together. I love it.
Catherine, I've been sewing since long before you were born but I enjoy watching each and every one of your videos. Anyone would be fortunate to have you teach them about textiles and sewing. You have a way of making it seem so achievable. FYI - Nick of Time Textiles is a great source for sweater knit fabric.
I saw this video & was really looking forward to sitting down and savouring every moment. I love seeing jumpers(UK) being created and altered. That looks so good Catherine and blue suits you so well that I imagine there is some Danish in your ancestry 😊 well done. It's fabulous.
Now I know how to use a twin needle! Thank you for walking out this step. Everyone just assumes you know how to do it. Cute sweater make. I notice that I’m buying fewer patterns and fabric because what you have taught us is sinking in. Making a drawstring back pack out of a old windbreaker. Wish me luck :-)
This is so beautiful. I am definitely going to do one myself! I love the clips. So easy-to-use on fleeces and knits. I saw you use them and bought some.
That is so cute!!! And, if you don't want to wear a shirt under, there is a bra by Lunaire that gives the look of a lace camisole, having a panel across between the cups. They come in a pale blue that would be awesome under your sweater. There is a vanilla color but I think that wouldn't be so good with the white. I knit and yes it's scary to cut them! LOL. Thanks for the boost. OOPS I didn't realize I had left another comment!
This was such an informative tutorial. Knits are something I'm just starting to try. You have wiped away many of my fears. I can't wait to get started. I've been saving some ruined knits (stains) to use for practice pieces as I gain confidence doing this new talent, sewing with knits. Thank you so much, for being such a great teacher.
Great video. And I love how you and so talented yet you don't always sounds sure of yourself and you make some mistakes that the rest of us do too. And your not afraid of going back and fixing them. Makes you so much more relative. Thank you
I love your teaching technique ! Your young students are lucky to have you. I learned my love of sewing in junior high and have sewn for years, but at 70 years of age I am learning so much from you! Thank you for your channel.
Wow Catherine... I love it. I have two pieces of sweater knit just waiting to be sewn. You give me confidence to do this. Thank you for your wonderful tutorial.
I bought a lovely pinkish sweater from Goodwill but then realized it is too short for my liking. I cut the sleeves off to make leggings-type pants for my granddaughter, but I'm not sure how to put it together. Can you do a video on that please?! I know that it also works for any long sleeve shirt. Thanks.
Good morning Catherine, I am addicted to your videos. I feel you are sitting right beside me. I’ve been sewing for years and you have again inspired me. I have a beautiful knit, not sweater knit, that will be my next sew. Finishing up a shirt today. Tip for older sewers, I have neuropathy and pain in hands and cutting has been an issue. Just started using chargeable scissors and it has been a game changer for me. Thanks for your wonderful instructions.
Yes I totally agree that this is a wonderful video with so many helpful tips. As someone who knits I have always been very fearful to cut into a sweater or any hand knit item. You have made me see things in a different light and this has opened up more possibilities to me. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge with us!
Such a cute sweater. You've taught me so much watching your video's. I'm just learning how to make sweaters and sweat shirts so this video is helping me so much. Thanks!
Your teaching style is SO good, that you give us confidence to do projects. This is not a beginner project in my opinion, but your step by step, clear instructions would empower a beginner for sure.
Thanks for the video. Just in time. I am thinking of cloning a few favourite tops for home wear but have yet to start as the whole process seem overwhelming for me. You make it all seem so easy.
Thank you for sharing how to sew with sweater knits. You are a wonderful teacher. Your sweater is beautiful!!! I love watching all your videos. God bless you.
I'd love to know more about the quilted rainbow heart on your wall! I have a rainbow jelly roll, and that is exactly what I want to make with it! Thank you for putting out such great content with detailed instructions! I never got the chance to take sewing in high school and have always regretted it. Your videos make me feel like I'm getting the chance to make up for that. Thank you.
You are the best teacher! I have come back to your videos time and time again. Especially with the welt pockets tutorial. I don’t do them enough for them to stick in my brain, lol. Love your tips, and the whys about why something is done. Thank you❤
You are such a great teacher! I have two pieces of sweater knit in my stash, and this was so helpful to watch to help me know how to sew with it. Thank you so much!
I have a sweater from my partner that I've been saving because I love it, but it's way too big. This has just given me the confidence to finally tackle it. Thank you.
I've heard people talking about differential feeds being important to having success with knits (maybe not "sweater knits") They may be talking about sergers and I don't know about those. They use a walking foot on their regular machines. Why would some need these and some not? - Kelly
Looks great, you're relaxing to watch and your voice is really calming, I often struggle to sleep, so watch your content in the wee hours. Thank you for sharing your talent with us, I love to sew and have learnt loads about upcycling clothes.
Thank you SO much for this video. I’ve had some sweater knits in my stash for ages but have been afraid to sew it. I’m on holiday at the moment and will be home in 2 weeks. Then I will have a go at making this pattern. Thanks again!❤️
I LOVE this video… I appreciate your showing us how to do things the sweater is beautiful. I have made three of the boxwood hoodies… now I want to try this. Fitting is my most difficult thing. I wish I could come to your classroom and learn. ❤ Diann
I don’t know how you do it, but you always seem to put out a video when I’m in the middle of the very thing you’re teachingus! I had just looked up your V neck tutorial yesterday while making a sweater knit top, so this has given me ideas about going back to cut a curved hem before I finish it. Thanks, Catherine!
I so wish that I had your confidence. I have only a low-end serger (overlocker in the UK ), that I haven’t really mastered. I should find it helpful if you would detail your serger settings when you use it. e.g. single or double needles, tension settings, stitch length and width, differential feed etc. Particularly tensions, which are the bane of my life. I have just bitten the bullet and reduced the size of a lightweight low V neck knit by making a seam centre back and front and I’m very pleased with the results. Thank you. I can rarely find anything “off the peg” to fit me but it’s often possible to find quality items that need altering in charity shops. If I’ve paid less than £10 for something I’m not so wary about altering it unlike new things costing 4 or more times that.
So pretty on you. I bought a knitted dress this past winter (Australia) and it is way too big for me. I didn't return it as I should have, but put it in my bottom drawer 😏. Perhaps with your guidance, I will be able to do something with it for next winter. This is such a versatile wardrobe piece. I love your project.
Do you have a video or can you do a video on how to properly take all of our measurements and also how to properly mesure the crotch for sometimes when sewing pants or upcycling pants they don’t fit well waist/front crotch and waist/back crotch = waist/crotch in general!😮
I have shopped at Vogue Fabrics when they have their booth at Sew Expo in Washington State. I really like them and just ordered some cotton batiste online. They also have seasonal booklets that have fabric selections that have swatches. These are great to learn fabric content, so it makes it easier to order online. Order previous seasons and they are discounted.
hi Catherine I love your upcycling video's so clear in instruction's and easy to follow, I sew how you shown how to change a pattern with a two piece pattern but could you do one about a dress pattern that has ragon sleeves and princess seams. i have a pattern that is 3sizes too small and not conferment to do with out guidance. much appreciated if you would do no worries if you are too busy still like all your tutorials on sewing and altering
That was fun and I love that knit you used for this project. How many yards did you end up using, and it was 58” wide? Also, I think I’d cut a curved strip of that lightweight tricot and attach it to the hem before sewing. It came out perfect and looks so pretty on you.
Thanks, Leslie! So glad you found this video helpful! If you're working with knits, it's good to have a yard or two of tricot on hand because it really is the best for those odd times when you want to interface a knit. They're also good for soft, silky woven fabrics too. A soft, lightweight non-woven interfacing would be the next best alternative.
Kudos to you for a great video and I’ll ditto the same comment from SaraWelder1. I would be hesitant to use a free battern and just go into the fabric. I would need a Muslin first to see how it fits stc. Thank you!!
I do love your teaching style. You explain things clearly without lots of " filler talk" and no music... bliss!
Couldn't agere more! Love your inspiring videos. Greetings from Laila in Denmark
Sorry: agree
Totally agree , addictive watching , I’ve learned so much
I agree too.

😅 lol ... me too ... on the swearing! 😂
Haha, I love that.🤣
Wow! I can’t tell you how many little tips and tricks I picked up during this video! You are a phenomenal teacher!
I just did a sweater up cycling that was inspired by your videos.

Nice job. Love the length, v-neck & especially the twin needle stitching.
Absolutely amazing and phenomenal. You are just the best. I've learned so much and you just make it seem so easy 🥰🥰
I haven’t done garment sewing in years…watching you makes me consider returning to it. Thanks for your inspirational video!
Thank you for encouraging people to sew and upcycle knits!
Your sweater looks great on you.

I always learn something new when I watch your videos! ❤❤❤
I also adore using clips, especially with knits and slippery and delicate fabrics.
That v neck shape is just right and i appreciate the facing tutorial as well, nicely done.
You are such a great teacher,so clear. Xxx

The V-neck and the rounded hem looks really nice on the top. The fabric is beautiful.
I’m always so impressed by your method for teaching and explaining with hints and tips. I learn so much from you. Your sweater turned out super!

I am lucky enough to have a cover stitch on my serger. But you have done a great job with the twin needles! Thanks for doing this tutorial.
Wow Catherine... I love it. I have two pieces of sweater knit just waiting to be sewn. You give me confidence to do this. Thank you for your wonderful tutorial.

Great knit and cut! Perfect for tucking in only the front, too. Love!
Thanks for the video. Good tips on working with knits
Love it! Thanks, as always.
This sweater is so cute and you made it look so easy to do.

Thanks so much for the SuperThanks, Julie! That means a lot! 🫶
Oh my gosh!! I've been so afraid of sewing knits (especially sweater knits) and now I'm excited!
I'll look, but do you have a surger tutorial?
Thank you, super cute!

I used 1.5 yards, and yes it was about 58-60" wide. Thanks!

Hi Catherine. Do you know what a clapper is ? It really helps with pressing knits. Thanks for the tutorial.
Hello Catherine. Please tell me what you use to sharpen tailor's chalk or soap?Thank you
Which serger do you like best? If you don’t mind saying. Love your videos
I love my old Kenmore serger, but if I had to get a new one, I’d get a BabyLock!
Beautiful!
Love this video thank you. Can you tell me where you get the soap to mark fabric please?
It’s literally just the last sliver of a bar of regular soap.
Catherine, when you sewed with the twin needle did you have to adjust the tension on your machine?
No need! The tension was fine as is.
