To this day, not many people know that the line was originally supposed to be "I don't think a spell will work on this one" but he changed it to "I don't think a spell is gon' work on dish one" in a moment of sheer improvisational brilliance, with the encouragement of his acting coach Keith, who doubled as the dancing red devil you see behind him.
I'm still finding it funny the kid's partner is a dancing devil. Good on the dance floor, but damn they can't even drop those fancy boxers without a fight. Don't get me started on the tap devil's tail.
This commercial proves that Square Enix invested heavily in promoting the first DQMJ game in the West and it did get a significant following and enjoyed moderate success which allowed Square to release DQMJ2. But that's when things snowballed despite that DQMJ2 had more impact and success than its predecessor it nonetheless did not make enough sales in the West compared to its native Japan which caused Square to exclusivate DQMJ2 Pro/DQMJ3 and its Pro only in Japan. You'd wish you'd point fingers at someone to blame as a DQMJ fan or wish Square would have considered the long-term but they are, like all companies, need to profit by their numbers. That's Life.
@@chocobros1 Tl;Dr : Joke from an old podcast. From the GFW Podcast (Games for Windows Podcast, yes that's how old this is.). Shawn Elliott created a fake message board poster named "IdealPoster" (who's profile name was Finnster Mayhew) and posted on their forums as satire of pretentious forum posters. This grew to a conclusion when he made a post as IdealPoster claiming to be the kid in this commercial. If you wish to go down the rabbit hole I'm sure someone has posted an excerpt on RUclips from the GFW Radio Podcast about IdealPoster. I also recommend checking out more GFW Podcast clips like "Hero of the Web" where Shawn reads out and ridicules message board posts online.
How this is not a worldclass meme is beyond me.
It was when it came out. Even among non Dragon Quest fans. This and Yangus are about all anyone knew about the series for a decade.

Thank you, I've been wanting to watch this again
This ad is so shit but as a kid I was so hyped whenever it played. Had to go out and buy it
me and my brothers are in our 30s and we never even played this game, yet "I can do it, I can cast the spell" is on the roster of childhood quotes.

Indeed. 😭 Wish DQM had a larger following in the west, but it is what it is.
We got a new DQM in the west!
@@nathanparkWhat do you think of the new DQM?
@i4xy1jw7e I haven't played the full game, only the demo. Based on gameplay videos, it looks like the game lacks polish.
Edited: grammar
I remember the game and did get the game too it was pretty good
