- "Holy Is His Name" is based on the Canticle of Mary, a hymn based on the Canticle or Song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55), which Mary proclaims after the jubilant meeting of Mary, pregnant with Jesus, and her relative Elizabeth, pregnant with St. John the Baptist.
This canticle is not only the inspiration for "Holy Is His Name," it has been a daily hallmark of the prayer of the Church for centuries.

One of my favourite songs. It was lovely, but I would have enjoyed hearing the descant.
Thanks Collette! At this specific Mass, while we only had the two singers (so couldn’t sing SATB + descant), I thought the simplicity of the duet brought an authentic quality to the Canticle, replicating how Mary might have actually sung it. Blessed Advent!!!

He has Mercy from generation to generation on whom? Why do singers always omit the key words. Are they too hard to swallow? MERCY IS ONLY UPON THOSE WHO FEAR HIM. Four words out of his mouth created the sun...burning out of control at 27M degrees F for millions of years! That kind of power is worthy of fear! Without the healthy fear of God you cannot and WLL NOT BE SAVED. Listen to the sinless Virgin....Luke 1:49-50 who said it AND FEARED GOD! Amen Lord, it is said as you wished, an unworthy slave, a sinner has heard you loud and clear ALSO in Matt 10:28 "Fear no man who ca only kill the body, rather, fear Him, that can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna."
