This story was chilling. It had such a bleak quality to it, like none of us can escape our past. And the imagery of the snowman… I won’t look at one the same way again. Wonderfully narrated, Ian.

I have read a staggering amount of horror in my life, but this is one of the only tales that genuinely scared me. I love your narration style and voice. This channel has helped me discover so many good horror books and weird tales. Thank you
The ending of this one left me dissatisfied. What happened next? I had been imagining the couple racing from the scene in their motor, and there in the road, just at a wicked curve, is the snowman! The car swerves and sails off the cliff into (of course) a deep crevasse, where neither they nor their vehicle are ever found.
My own head canon has the snowman brandishing the same axe that Phillip used to decapitate it days before. It decapitates the couple, then delivers some cheesy one-liner about revenge being a cold dish before fading to black.
I loved the ending. My take is this: what happens next doesn’t matter (and even what’s ‘really’ happening outside doesn’t matter); what matters is that Nancy asks her new husband to let in her first husband; in so doing, essentially rejecting her current marriage and reaffirming her first marriage-one defined by terrorized obedience. SUPREMELY dark ending imo!

“ The removal of the slab revealed a black aperture, from which rushed an effluence of miasmal gases so nauseous that we started back in horror….” Keep up the good work fella and stay safe!
I heard it and knew no more. Heard it as I sat petrified in that in that unknown cemetery in the hollow, amidst the crumbling stones and the falling tombs, the rank vegetation and miasmal vapours. Heard it well up from the innermost depths of that damnable open sepulchre as I watched amorphous, necrophagous shadows dance beneath an accursed waning moon. And thi is what it said: RETURN THE SLAB OR SUFFER MY CURSE
*Magnificent* horror story! And one of your finest performances-the part where she goes to fetch firewood makes my skin crawl! “The Yellow Wallpaper” meets Frosty the Snowman. :) happy new year, everyone! *Also! Anyone know where I can find a plain text copy of this story? I’d like to print it out as a stocking stuffer
@@HorrorBabble It's a GREAT episode! Not sure if you know Thriller but it was a 1960-1961 horror anthology series starring Boris Karloff. The Hollow Watcher is about an Irish mail order bride who kills her husband's father in NC and puts his body in a nearby scarecrow. She thinks she's gotten away with it but the Scarecrow seems to be moving by itself over the next few days, almost like it's alive and seeking vengeance...
I attempted to write a story like this some years ago .It was about a fanciful woman who imagined the form of an icy man in the ravine at night across the street from where she lived. But the story didn't have a crescendo ending . And the giant thigh bone of Winter Man is still there waiting to assemble into that terrifying manifestation.
A wonderful reading as always. If only Jennifer were available to read every female part! No, I don't really mean that, not fully. I wouldn't want to forfeit too much of Ian's performance.
A snowman trying to get into a nice warm house? How absurd! I suppose next you'll be telling us about a man made of water wandering around sub-zero Canada
Unfortunately I don't smoke, so when I come back after my wife and her new husband the snowman will have an Xbox controller in one hand and a frozen hot pocket in the other. She'll know it's me...
Warren the dead man, He was a lost and hopeless soul! His face pale white, and cold as ice. Lookin' as if he seen a ghost! Warren the dead man, He was a foolish man they say, He descended the stairs, And ne'er came back from there. Damn you fool, he's dead!
**Absolute Spoiler!!!!! I don't like the end 🌬 it was inevitable. Phillip went stiffly to the door and slowly opened it to the horrific snow man. it walked zombie-like into the room, its snow crystals glittering. it stepped towards her menacingly and came on. The fire crackled, low but hot. the feet left splotches of wetness on the carpet. it came on. she, couldn't move. still, it came. Philip was motionless, astounded. on it came, lurching. the glittery snow was forming ice crystals now, drops of water freezing against the coldness further inside the snow man. it wasn't as tall. yet, it came on. the head fell slightly to the side. it fell slowly off. the arms disappeared into pools of the water already already melted into the rug. Philip moved towards her taking her hand. they clung together in fear and disbelief. the body clumped to the floor. lumps of snow pooled. they stared at the small melting lumps in the sodden rug. tears came to her eyes and fell down her face. he held her. the wind shrieked, the snow swirled. . .

Yeah, Nancy feels guilty for committing a heinous crime - poor dear

@@shaddonon I definitely see that interpretation, and it seems obvious now that you state it. Still like the idea of the snowman in the road, though!
The snowman in the illustration looks oddly benign. 'Hello, dear. Did you miss me?'
I'm getting more of a passive aggressive vibe.
He looks like Sir John Gielgud
Uhhh looks a little too uncanny imo

Can't be! I just saw Warren in Anatomy disection class this morning; he was brought in by our local " resurrection men". 🤔
I'm going start saving these up to listen to at Christmas.

I don't think it was every printed outside of Weird Tales. We might have to put a collection together ourselves in due course.
Try Project Gutenberg.

I second this comment. Thriller was an excellent horror anthology and that episode was pretty grim.

That snowman is terrifying!!
Now where did I put that flame thrower...? 🔥
Poor Warren.
did you know that in the non-abbreviated version of the original story they let the snowman in and they all drink hot chocolate together?
Just hoping for a meaningful update on Warren’s status.
Man, that was good.
I love these stories. Have to chuckle a little about someone climbing with a pipe in his mouth😂

So...I guess the moral here is Don't go mountain climbing with someone who wants to divorce you; well, cheap funeral anyway and very eco-friendly 🤣
good winter story,...but I can't say that I feel sorry for the wife!
The ending... A bit unsatisfying? Oh well.
It's had us thinking about it afterwards, which is a good thing -- but a fair point, either way.

Never liked snowmen, found them creepy ⛄😳
Disappointed that we never get an explanation for what is going on. Supernatural? Coincidence? Friend of her first husband messing with her?
PTSD? Shared hallucinations? Domestic violence and the injustice of a woman's place in that time may have done them both in. Who knows?
