Trapped in a Tree? How to get out Clean | Bowhunting Whitetails w/ Bill Winke

  • One of the toughest challenges we face when bowhunting whitetails is getting away from evening stands near feeding areas without bumping the deer. If you do that, they become a lot harder to kill there. I have found four ways to get out clean. In this episode, I discuss these four ways to keep your best hunting spots fresh for the entire season.

    Fantastic Sir! I just used a coyote (mostly barks and yelps, one howl) call the other night, A buck snort call got them on their way after. The deer were not spooked and made and orderly withdrawal, after just staring for a bit.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Год назад

      That worked well. I have always been afraid that howling from the tree would call too much attention to my stand site. I always felt that I needed the scare to come from somewhere else. Maybe I was over-reacting. Good input.

    Bill....take several big handfulls and scatter it in about a 10x10 area in front of your camera....it keeps the deer in front of the camera longer and puts them in various positions so that you get multiple shots and angles while they browse around picking it up.

Why ? He asked. Answer: I want to get one with my bow. But the last couple days. If I can’t get one 20-30 yards ,
    close enough for bow. I could go to my shotgun.
    He didn’t know and got back to me that I could. There was nothing on the books saying I couldn’t.

It would have to last at least two hours to make this worth considering (fly it out to the edge of the field away from the stand or blind two hours before the end of legal time (assuming the field is clear) and then use it to spook the deer at dark.

      Yes, but you are still spooking them from the tree. If it really sounded like a squirrel they wouldn't run off. I think to be bulletproof, you need something that spooks them naturally from some other location so they don't associate the scare with your stand or blind.

    I bought a small handheld coyote call with a remote that's good up to 300' I just hang it on a limb or set in the ground usually 100' or so and when I'm ready to get down after dark, I let that thing sound off and it doesn't take long to clear a field or plot. And then just bump it a few times as I'm walking out to push any stragglers away from my exit...works like a charm.

    I have a few stands in a woodlot that is surrounded by ag. I park my truck along the road facing into the field. I am able to climb down out of the tree and sneak towards the edge of the woodlot without blowing deer, which is then only about 300 yards from my truck and I can activate my remote start, it starts and the headlights come on out into the field and generally pushes the deer out. It’s not perfect and I have had some does and young bucks go on alert but stick around in the field though, I think maybe because the truck is not moving? I like the RC idea as well, will be curious to see how it works.

    You forgot “number 5”: Stagger your hunts by hunting different stands and even different properties as the sign and the wind allow. In my younger years, I walked from home and hunted north, west, and south of town. I had my plans, but nature had her own; many times I was forced to adjust my plans with results. Deer I spooked a week and a half ago were back in the same place at the same time because I was blessed to know how to keep deer guessing by using as many hunting locations as possible stand-wise AND property-wise all at the same time. This takes years of woods and hunting experience.

    This is my biggest issue on my place. I have placed a stand which makes it easier on a fence line where I can hopefully climb down and ease out the overgrowth. Early season is the worst because the deer navigate and get stuck on this white oak right in the middle of my land. The property is longer and narrower so there is really no where to get around it on my place without alerting the deer. So I dont think I can hunt mornings as long as acorns are dropping and getting out in the afternoons gets tricky.

    This may not always be the best option depending on your scenario, but I have used a coyote call to just make the deer a little nervous and they end up walking out of the edge of the field for a short amount of time

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  2 года назад

      Matt, I think that works but the only risk is if they come to associate the call with your blind or stand. I think this is even more a problem with blinds because the deer are always trying to find something wrong with blinds and always kind of half-suspect them of evil. So you have to be super careful when exiting blinds so they don't pin your activity to that box.

    I've barked at them like I was a dog, thrown water bottles at them, got my brother to drive the truck in to spook em off, but I've had the best success just climbing down 30 minutes after dark and pretending to be a ninja. Clean up your escape trails, don't use a light and just tip toe out. Haven't been busted a single time yet amazingly. Done it about 10-15 times with deer within 25 yards of the stand. I have a big old pine tree blocking most their line of site when I'm climbing down tho

      Orion, that is good input. I have tried that a few times and found that they still detected me, but it is much better than doing it right at last light when they can for sure see you well. Hey Bill, what are your thoughts on using stakes with black/green/camo tarp and or other fabric to create a man made screening to the blind? Obviously not natural and deer would notice it right away but maybe if put at the beginning of summer, theyd be used to it by hunting season? For example, an enclosed blind in a open food plot on the outside edge, with the man made screening stretching along that outside edge just to the stand. Could get down and walk on the otherside to avoid detection.

It is worth trying it and if it doesn't work (if the movement in the plots really drops off after the first hunt), you will have to come up with another way out (sleeping in the blind and accessing in and out only at midday maybe?).
