A Total War Saga: Troy Review

- A Total War Saga: Troy reviewed by T.J. Hafer on PC.
It may not be up to the grandeur of Three Kingdoms or Warhammer 2, but A Total War Saga: Troy is a significant step up from the previous Saga game, Thrones of Britannia. Troy is simply dripping with style and offers exciting, diverse campaign objectives that enthusiastically retell the timeless tale of the Trojan War and its iconic characters. There are enough technical missteps, particularly with the campaign, economy, and battle AI, that it's still vulnerable to a sharp jab in the heel. But with a bit of post-launch love to clean all of that up, it could certainly take its place among the Total War pantheon.

every total war review since 20 years ago : There are some particular problems with the AI.
True but expect lots of updates to improve the game
They should just remove the AI by making it 100% players

Not sure if it’s deliberate or a bug, but if you give them a counter offer of 1 of any resource they’ll accept it and you be able to keep them off your back easily...
I found it really funny when my allies request for resources and I just shut them up with 1 food...
@@blank1294 I tried the game for a couple hours and noticed this too, the entire trade system seems a bit broken to me
@@giorgiannicartamancini3917 It's broken, yet so much better than what we had, I hated the arbitrary income you got from "trade relations", now you can tailor your trade relations to give you exactly what you need, at the cost of what you don't need, improve relations by giving large gifts, etc. It is funny how you can shut them up with a piece of corn and a stone but I'm sure if they stick with this trading system (here's hoping) they will iron it out.

Yeah. so you are the product to the chinese overlords. And your cash is funding the concentration camps in China. And it also means they can boast about their numbers when in reality is only 1/10th of the real consumer base.
but the real question to ask is why it is free?
1) it free because its to soften the blow of CA going for an epic exclusive deal
2) if it's free then you are the product (user data)
3) epic wants to move the customers to epic from steam
4) CA have so low confidence in this SAGA type of game after Thrones of Brittania, that they are giving it off for free.
@@TheGreatMandalore look around your home, I'm pretty sure there are more than 50% stuffs are made in China.
@@warnerlewtv6923 I would like to think that is true, but then again a few months ago I wouldn't think CA would ever go for a Epic exclusivity deal.

I adore the graphics in this. Everything has a warm, painterly feel. I'm still going to play through Total Warhammer first, but WOW I wish they treated the graphics for Warhammer more like this. It's like a lore book come to life. The proportions of the troops seem better, too, and I love the hyper-saturation. Frame rates seem more stable too (2070 super, 3800x, 64gb ram). The story/cutscenes seems like a huge step-up. I've never considered a character's story when picking a leader before, but it actually made it interesting in this game, especially because everything hinges around this one conflict over Helen. I honestly like these smaller-scale, bite-sized TW games. They're easier to keep a handle on because they don't get so ENORMOUS by the end game, and I like the focused story. Hey, the game was also $0, so I can't complain.
66 sacks of wine don't want immortality - its yours, take it!
I'm pretty happy with my 0.00$ purchase thanks to Kings and General's releasing a troy history video advertising the release of the game for free on the epic store.

One thing you can't deny about the Saga titles it the art. Always beautiful. Thrones of Brittania had amazing art direction. Troy is no different. ALSO, this review was really well done. Well written / researched and not too long / short.

AI has always been a problem in Total War games
As it always been 🤣, the famous one is Rome 2
And the only reason TW Warhammer is better is because they give the AI magic to cover up a lot of the derping.
@@maxpayenvenic6029 i bet its because their dumb and glitchy and doing nothing right?

At its best, A Total War Saga: Troy makes you FEEL like Troy. 9/10
It has a little something for everyone
*gives negative review about game* even with all of the faults, this game is still a masterpiece, 5/10.
Glad I got this one free. It really looks like a total war iPad app. I miss the day of CA taking on large and ambitious projects like empire, even tho the vanilla was garbage. I still want to see an empire 2 Althing I don’t think we ever will. The UK and CA specifically have gone super “politically correct” so it’s all about small stylized and “romantic” periods in history now. I wish CA still wanted to make games for big boys, I feel like they dumb down their games with every other new release.
I personally love this direction but to each their own.
Choose impossible difficulty and the game will give you a new enemy. Trojan Virus
Hopefully all the AI bugs will be fixed in a Day One Patch. It seems a silly bug for a tried and tested mechanic.
Some bugs are not as easy to fix as you think, troubleshooting is fking tough.
"It's an easy fix" - no developer, ever
Total war ai has always been a problem since day 1 and it will never be resolved that fast.
This engine came out with Empire. The AI won't be fixed because the engine is fundamentally broken and they can't be arsed to make a new one.
Lol no that's not how it works. AI bugs in strategy games are almost never patched out.

Love how people complain about it being free... Sure its on epic store but it takes you like 3 min to get it.. Its possible to have both steam and epic store.
A reminder that at the moment, Epic is constantly giving away free titles so you would be wise to follow them somehow to keep up to date until they run out of Fortnite money.
Their value went from like 8B to 15B in one year.. don't think that money is going away anytime soon lol.
How does it get an 8/10? I get the first half of the video, it has a gorgeous campaign map. But the second half (the gameplay half) has almost ZERO positive remarks??

Wish this review covered more on faction and unit diversity as that's a constant bugbear that's plagued TW with few exceptions
The whole idea of a siege is supposed to break an army's momentum tho, that's the whole idea, it's supposed to be a waiting game if ya don't choose to rush in imo
Great point
@@kairosmvr1900 thanks bro
@@TheCoolCucumber you might be right. But in the iliad it took ten years to besiege troy. Its supposed to feel like a relief and achievement when they finally crack
@@TheCoolCucumber what's the alternative? There's the option to rush in
Yeah but ancient sieges were crazy, they would try to get over or under the walls, make them collapse, build ramps... the Iliad itself describes multiple sallies which could be fleshed out more, and of course there's all the subterfuge
This game has way more weaknesses than just the Achilles tendon that's for damn sure. Haha
its actually his heel
The combat always looks so fake. You get these huge armies facing each other but the only ones fighting are the ones in the first row, all the others in back are just standing there.
WebDev yeah the fights in this game are quite lame, and the archers are not a effective as you would expect, and they have like zero range.
But surely you know that only the first row fought in real life as well :P
Lattamonsteri I still expect a bit more effect into the enemy and like I said, the range really bothers me.
SpeciamDoesntDraw I mean they didn’t even have composite bows at that time so it’s historically accurate. For what it’s worth, I’m a massive missile, siege spammer and I loved it.
@@speciamdoesntdraw1052 i admit that somehow the units feel like they lack a bit of oompf (except charging chariots go very deep and i love it xD)
Don't have any plans installing it at first. Even the trailer doesnt entice me. But since it's free and I love Total War I installed it anyway. Never thought I would enjoy this game!
The Bronze Age is something new in this franchise and I would say very interesting! It feels like a very new setup with the soundtrack and colorful palette of the background, it'll indulge you like youre in a movie! Kudos to CA!
btw the reason 'most history games act like nothing before Alexander is worth mentioning' is because there is hardly anything before Alexander that is not entirely speculative and historically uncertain. Just take Mycennia for an example -- we literally thought the Myceneans and Minoans didn't even exist outside of myth and folklore until a bit more than one century ago when we discovered the real Minoan island with the caves of the Minotaur
My biggest problem was the units. They just felt so uninteresting compared to Warhammer etc.
Everything is uninteresting compared to warhammer, especially 40k, nothing else touches it
It looks like they went with the version of chariots from Homer rather than the real Trojan War, where the heroes use them as taxis to battle and not to fight from them as they were really used at the time.
2:18 Baked clay? Isn't that paper?
It's the papyrus in which all those epic stories was written, yes xD and it burns, just like the library of alexandria burned down and we lost all those epics (well except for iliad and odyssey)

War. War. War. And not one mention of the depiction of the face that launched 1,000 ships that started it all. She’s gorgeous and exactly how she’s described in the text and how women in Troy were decorated in the time with our current knowledge. Check her out.
HAVE YOU HEARD OF PAPYRUS?
Ha ha ha, I thought the exact same thing. Very strange oversight by the reviewer.
The game was not even supposed to come out until spring/summer 2021. This was basically an unofficial early release which only happened because epic had great interest I'm assuming. A lot of these issues are going to be fixed. I still want to know why this game came out almost a YEAR early. Epic had to pull strings to get this not only released early but for free as well. I hope the information becomes public at some point, I have not found any information regarding the business side of things.
epic wanted the rts fans on there store
this is not just a game , it's ART !
One of the first things I noticed is: what's up with unit cohesion? When two units clash a huge moshpit is formed, nobody can keep ranks, is this the norm in new titles? The newest chapter I played was Shogun 2 and I didn't notice this problem, at least my spearmen could form a line
Also, was the UI designed by actual humans?
It's only really a problem in Troy, although Shogun 2 was the last Total War to have proper soldier interactions. Ever since Shogun 2 units just swing their weapons in the direction of the enemies.
@@skyz6708 Yeah, played some more and noticed that units don't touch eachother and swing spears around o.o, even M2 had better animations
Also first impression of the graphics was bad, after a while I realized the skybox wasn't loaded for my first couple hours, the more I go on on my campaign the more I feel like being on an epic journey to discover just how broken this is, recently found out wrong instructions for a tutorial lol
@@skyz6708 you consider 1v1 combat in a giant battle to be proper soldier interactions?
@@123pa1n Yeah? Shogun 2 had soldiers 1v1 fight each other in huge fights. A soldier didn't just die because a weapon was swung in their direction, they actually got killed from being stabbed and if you had the blood pack they would get decapitated or lose a limb in a actual sword fight. It makes for a much more enjoyable experience to see soldiers fight rather than swinging weapons.

Don't play this one then.
I don’t like it. I’m a veteran TW player mainly because I love (ancient) history. This game should be consolidating Mycenaean Greece and then crossing the Aegean to attack Troy. Instead I can’t even consolidate Peloponnesos because I get attacked from all sides and hector and Paris coming over for no reason to attack, even on normal mode. So frustrating.
