  • The BLHeli passthrough is nice because we can quickly make changes to ESCs through the flight controller. But in some cases I flash the ESCs through an Arduino Nano. Here is how.

Dude thank you. I’m just starting to learn about all this. I’m gettin pretty good with airplanes and I’m gonna custom build my own quad copter.

hey Jc, I just wanted to say thank you for all the great content you put out. With alot of help from your videos I finished my first build yesterday and nothing fried. Anyway thank you man, I really appreciate your dedication to sharing your knowledge of the hobby.

Great video, as usual...! Thanks, and keep doing that fine work! You're showing me things I wouldn't think of at my current level of understanding! I feel like I'm enrolled in JC's school of Everything Quad...

It works the exact same way on the Arduino Uno. The chip may look different, but it is just a different model of the same chip with the same internal layout but made for SMD use instead of being placed on a socket. The only thing that might be different is the USB to UART chip used on the board, as most cloned Arduinos use a different (and cheaper?) one.

Always wondered about this. As long as I've been into quads there has always been passthrough. Oh and first.

Yea this way of doing it seems to have been long forgotten since the passthrough. But for good reason, the passthrough is amazing

Hi, I think what you have explained is very clear, thank you! I am still at the stage of figuring out how to flash a bootloader onto a board. Do you have any content on that or can refer me to content on that? Thank you!

Man, I have 2 sets of ESC does not show up in BLheli suit when I do this. They were fine until I tried to flash them to latest BLheli firmware. If you want, I can send them to you and you can make a tutorial how to fix them and you can keep them. One is Littlebee otherone is RTF black mini 30A.

Funny - I did this just yesterday. You can also power the ESC directly from the Arduino (at least that was enough for the ESCs I was flashing)

Maybe this is a dumb question, but which ESCs can be programmed through the connector and which require a chip clip? Can _all_ ESCs be programmed through the connector via an Arduino?? That would be stunning.

I've had some cheap blheli esc's, but the program can't connect to them. It won't find the esc's at all. Please help.
The esc's are called: readytosky 40a 2-6s opto.
I found it out already. When you're using a arduino uno, you have to connect your esc's to pin 8-11.

Hey man, thanks for the video! I am going to buy BLHeli ESC's and I would like to program them. I already have an Arduino Uno. What parameters can I change and what do they exactly mean, I couldn't find anything regarding what the settings mean. Where can I find that? Also, do I need a programming card, or is the BlHeliSuite the same, yet slightly more advanced?

My STRIX ESC says it is BLHeli S. Can I use this same procedure with the BLHeli S download I did for my ESCs. Or is this only for BLHeli 32? BTW I only do fixed wing and do not have any Flight Controllers unless the FT AURA 5 Lite is considered a FC. All of the YT videos so far only seem to deal with programming QUAD or FIGHTING BOTS. No one addresses programming BLHeli for fixed wing a/c.

Flash them through Arduino Uno/Nano via C2 interface. Required pads are nearby ESC MCU chip in 2 or 4 pad row.

I am interested in this, my daughter and I are building a underwater rov with 6 motors and six escs. we want to flash reverse compatibility. do you think this is possible? FVT LITTLEBEE BLheli-s are the escs we got.

Hey JC. I wanted to ask you something about the Omnibus FC. I have the F3 version and I cannot seem to power the FC using the VBAT pin (3rd row). The FC does power on and respond when it's connected to the 5V of the USB. I don't think the voltage regulator is fried as I checked the continuity between the GND and output & input. When checking the voltage between the input and GND of the regulator, when 15V is connected to the VBAT, I get no reading (0V). i hope this makes sense and that you can reply. Sorry I posted it two times both here and in the Discussions tab :)

can you flash blheli esc firmware versions too? for example if I wanted to run dshot on an esc that doesn't have the right firmware originally? nevermind I see that the aduino acts as a mock flight controller so you can do the same things with it in blheli suit as you can with a FC.

hey JC, I have a question. I have some little b 20a blheli s. escs. I was on 14.6. when I flashed to 14.9. all but the #4 esc took the flash. when I tried to flash #4. it told me that the esc was erased or unknown. now it won't take any flash. it shows up as the letter U when I connect. what can I do.

You might need to reflash it with the nano board and connecting it to the 4 pins on the ESC board. I had the same issue and did this last week on 5 esc's. With 2 people it's easier to do, you need 3 hands for this unless you solder the 4 pins to the esc's. We did this by just pressing the pins down and holding them throughout the process.
