    Just had a TSI as a courtesy car form my local VW dealership. Can’t believe how long the gearing is but thoroughly enjoyed it, stuck around 60mpg even driven enthusiastically. I’m guessing that had I driven it back to back with the GTI I may have been a little disappointed but I really loved it.

    Your usual high calibre affair Andrew, great way to start the weekend. Prior to the up! GTI, I had a fully loaded (minus power roof & Beats), honey yellow TSI High-up! that I factory specced. It was a great car and did everything you'd expect and more besides. So much so my wife ordered a TSI High-up! too (which she still has). With the High-up! trim you have a closer comparator to the GTI, heated seats, MFD, cornering/fog lights etc, though the price is much closer too of course. The problem for me was that I knew I wanted a GTI - extra styling, gearing, horse-power and ride etc. I made a big decision to trade my loaded TSI (at a considerable financial loss) for a reasonably specced built GTI and I have no regrets whatsoever despite losing toys and kit in the transition. In hindsight, I should have held off the TSI purchase as I knew the GTI was to arrive. Whilst my TSI was refined, subject to my fitting a Milltek exhaust, nippy and economical, it missed all of the extra ingredients you find in the GTI. If you want a great nippy city car the TSI is very difficult to beat, if you want the same, but with the added drivers enjoyment thrown in, the GTI takes the crown every time. The 5 speed box of the TSI has taller gearing as you move up the cogs - 70mph in 5th is a lower rpm than the GTI in 6th from recollection. Re: Beats, I have this in the GTI, the sound is crisper at high volume for sure and is a good addition if you like music. I have the toolkit firmly tucked away, so no dented rear boot panels in my car. A plus one for your review and findings Sir.

    Great video, as someone who has almost 2 years and 16k miles in a High UP! Tsi 90 I'd just like to tell you the thing never fails to put a smile on my face. As the previous owner of far higher performance cars including a highly modified (by me) 270 bhp/400ft lbs diesel Fabia Vrs, Stage 2 Octavia Vrs (Mk2) I never feel it falls short in this day and age. Speed cameras, terribly neglected roads, rising fuel costs etc. Having watched many many UP! Gti videos, including all of yours, I feel that the smaller wheels and softer suspension is more a benefit that a hindrance on the roads of Lancashire. I completed a 2800 mile round trip to Berlin and Auschwitz in late December/early Jan and honestly the little thing totally amazed me. An autobahn top speed (speedo) of 130mph, and average mpg on the whole trip of 47mpg, comfortable and as refined as cars classes higher. I'd genuinely just go and order an UP! Gti tomorrow if the differences between it and the High Up! TSi were greater. Anyway, keep up the great videos and thanks for the interesting content. That beats spec really looks like the poverty spec version in comparison with the high up.

      Hi David. The TSI 90 is a great package and the pros and cons of its versus the GTI will depend on how you use it, for some the TSI will be more suitable but the combination of tweaks made by the engineers are somehow worth more than the sum of their parts if you like driving in the manner a GTI should be driven. The crappy little road I use isn't representative of what most people drive on but it does reveal the attributes of these cars quite readily and while the GTI will do most of the TSI's job, it's massively superior on a B road which means if the stars align and you find yourself on this kind of road you can have a lot of fun with no real penalty over the TSI. Maybe the happy medium would be smaller wheels and tyres on the GTI? I've since realised the GTI was on the higher of 2 tyre pressure settings which explains why it was a bit more unsettled than my own car. Anyway, both are very impressive packages.

    The TSI 90 is actually the reason I ended up with the Up GTI. I test drove one in my search to replace my Audi A2 and was very impressed indeed, enough to consider buying one. The salesman told me that the Up GTI was imminent, and when I studied the specs versus the price I came to exactly the same conclusion that you have just come to Andrew. The Up GTI is the better car and it's worth the extra few grand, but that takes nothing away from the TSI which is a great car too. By the way, my GTI is presently on 15" wheels and has had the Soundaktor turned down, which greatly improves the ride and refinement, if you value such things. Another great video Andrew!

Is yours a 2019 model year (K in chassis number) as I gather the option to wind back the fake sound wasn't available on the first batch of cars which were 2018 MY? Would love to drive a GTI on non-eco, non-winters tyres and 15" wheels, TSI didn't make a good case for that but could be the eco-tyres and the chassis setup making it feel a bit sketchy. Interesting comparison, as we have a Beats Up! TSi 90 just now (with a few of the missing options added), but probably changing it for an Up! GTi next time. Not sure I agree with you about not having the Beats audio system - its not the best audio upgrade, but a lot better sounding than the standard system (& I think it's an option on the GTi as well).

    Im in the market for a DD, i really liked the forumula of the small car with a fair bit of grunt, my old clio 172 did it quite well, was well equipped and famously on forums i managed to get 212k out of it before things started to go wrong frequently enough for me to change it. Thanks for this video its been really useful in helping me decide. By the way, where is your favorite B road? I think mine locally to me, is at the top of tog hill near Bristol/Bath, its a little link road to the a46 road that goes to the m4. PLenty of undulations, nice tight corners and broken tarmac, my old evo used to shine on it - not yet taken the c63 along there, yet, but think it wont fair as well as the evo. I think what puts me off the UP gti is the compulsory traction control, in typical vw fair they've made it so you cant turn it off - this used to wind me up in my tts !!

    I stumbled across this video & it's a timely one as my wife has an Beats up TSi 90 (with some more options than the one in your video) & she is seriously thinking of changing it for a GTi. She liked her Up until she drove our Mk7 GTD golf, thought it felt horribly soft in comparison😂.
    I know the price has hiked recently, but seriously tempted if we can get a good deal on one from our VW dealer. The TSi engine is fab, it's our 2nd Up & is vastly superior to the non turbo High Up 75hp we had before - can only imagine how good the GTi is..other contender is a Seat Ibiza with that engine...but think a small car will be fine, as we've a Golf as well

      @@allosaurusfragilis7782 that's really interesting, as we were thinking about a 115hp Ibiza too. Probably would be an Up! GTi, but a 3dr wouldn't work. 5 seats isn't important but 5drs are (we have a large dog!).
      The Ibiza is more expensive, but definitely something we're considering. Hard to justify, as it's a 2nd car, but looks like a great car & much better specced than the Polo too.
      Big question is: manual or DSG! I'd have the DSG (just discovered how good a box the DSG is on my Golf), but my Wife would rather the manual...

    TSI 90 has huge gear ratios for the fact you can sit at 70mph on 2300rpm.. That was lower than my 2015 6 speed Passat.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 лет назад

      Interesting, not sure I drove it in 5th at all on this test but somewhere after second gear it did feel the ratios got a lot longer. The gearing certainly didn't help it dynamically, possibly another car hobbled by emissions regulations as gear ratios will affect consumption on the old NEDC test, glad the GTI wasn't obviously affected though 60mph in 2nd is a bit excessive!

  • @MJ-YT-USR
    @MJ-YT-USR 5 лет назад +4

    Just to be clear, in terms of design and options you're comparing the Up Beats spec that just happens to have a 1.0 tsi. My wife has the 1.0 tsi in High Up spec, which is much nicer than the Beats and comes with more options (front fog lights, heated seats and no moving banging tool kit in the boot etc.).

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 лет назад

      Yes indeed MJ👍 TBH the trim level wasn't really that relevant as I don't think it affects the dynamics that much and I was curious to see how a TSI 90 (and TSI 90) drove in comparison. The problem with the High Up! spec (correct me if I am wrong) is presumably it's even closer to the GTI price than the £11k of the Beats model and still does without the six speed gearbox and numerous other GTI tweaks that are worth more than the sum of their parts. If they lose value quicker than a GTI though then second hand they will make a lot more sense (unless you really want a GTI!)

    Well its a few years on and these TSi 90s and Gti's make even more sense than ever, let me explain......Fords & Fiats, are the UP's main rival and are riddled with issues, others I've considerd are the Aygo 1.0 or Swift 1.2 both a fair bit slower. Finally theres the Kia and Hyundai offerings which quite frankly I have no interest in.
    Now more recently here in the UK insurance costs are rising quite heavily and with whats going on in the middle east I genuinly believe we are about to experience an uptick in petrol prices once again. In addition to the UP ceasing production in 2023 I can soon see a point where demand outstrips supply as I believe this segment hots up (We are already seeing expensive vehicle price drops).
    Demand for the GTi is quite steady at the moment it seams, with low mileage ones being around 13 - 14k but the TSi being around 4k cheaper with a bit of shopping around. I'm pretty certain these will become quite sort after soon, especially lower mileage & high spec ones. The clever money long term may well be the more sort after GTi, however the TSi 90 has to be far better value right now.
    That said, I've just been on the hunt for a TSi 90 tax free, pre April 1st 2017, x5 door model, and to my suprise there's non currently for sale 😲. This would have been perfect, 0-60 sub 10s, 55mpg ish, £35 road tax, group 10 insurance, however I was still happy to get a late 67 plate with 8k miles, good spec, TSi 90 in black x5 door at aroud 4k less than the GTi, costing around 9k. Either way they both make perfect sense.

      I think it's because they make more money selling the limited amount of cars they can make in other countries - the amount of effort VW are currently making to save money (just look at the deletion of the leather from the handbrake lever) I can't imagine they'd ignore that fact.

      volkswizard it is due to the WLTP emission tests, you are again now able to order the UP GTi through any VW dealership, delivery date is a different matter though,
      Taken from VWs website, (it was the same with the golf R until around a month ago)
      Can't find the Up! you're looking for?
      Some of our cars are still being tested under new industry wide standards for fuel consumption and emissions (WLTP type approval). This means you may not be able to find all engines you would expect to see for the up! If you’d like more details on forthcoming models take a look at our pricelist, or contact your local retailer

    The stripes look so cheap on the Beats Up.
    The 3k premium seems a no brainer for GTi. Much nicer place inside too.

      @volkswizard  5 лет назад +2

    I went to buy an UP gti and they told me I had a 9 month waiting list but they can give me a 90 up beats ex show room car top spec with some extras for free, being only 18 the 90 up! Has just the right amount of fun and the is very exciting, id love to drive the GTI but I cant imagine it has too much more magic than the TSI

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 лет назад +1

      I didn't think that until I drove it! The TSI 90 is great value particularly at the price you will have got yours at and a brilliant starting point for Up! ownership but having driven that back to back with a GTI it doesn't really feel like the GTI at all when you start to push it. TSI 90 chassis is way more comfort oriented, gearing is much longer, engine mapping is much more linear, just these 3 things make a big difference. The engineers should be applauded for achieving what they have done with the GTI considering budget restictions and modest increase in list price over TSI 90 when spec is equalised.

  • @DefAde
    @DefAde 5 лет назад +1

    I love your videos, but... This always bothered me about your original ‘answer’ video to Misha... He never actually ever said you shouldn’t buy a GTI... he was answering all the messages asking him if HE was going to buy a GTI, and simply was explaining why HE would not buy a GTI for himself... which was basically because there was not enough differences for him to gain anything over his highly modified Sub 7 Up!.... I feel like you completely missed that point, and are still holding it against him as if he was knocking the GTI, when he wasn’t.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  5 лет назад +1

      I know, I get that but you can't get away from the fact that he made a lot of assumptions about the GTI that were wrong or unproven. His video was I think deliberately sensationalist (and why not as it gets views). Don't take it the wrong way, it's just a bit of banter between RUclipsrs, I love Misha and he probably doesn't acknowledge I exist so it's all good 👍

  • @db146
    @db146 5 лет назад +1

    You completely missed the point of his video, he wasn´t saying anything about the gti and if people should buy it, he said why he wont buy it compared to his, because his was already chipped and the difference in terms of performance are nothing, that is why HE wasn't gonna buy a GTI

    • @Aitch222
      @Aitch222 2 года назад

      Well, you're correct: Celtic Tuning (and I'm sure others) can take the stock TSI to 130bhp (and the GTI to 150...) - SW Tuning. Personally, I'd likely rather drive a tuned TSI High Up!, with the grunt BUT softer ride - and the fake sound generator in the GTI is a turn-off for me, really (can it be disabled?)

    • @mitduschzentrale
      @mitduschzentrale Год назад

      @@Aitch222 The sound generator can be set to anything between 0 and 100% volume. But you need VCDS. I like it, would even retrofit it to a TSI. What I don't like are the 17" GTI wheels. Yes they look great, but they are also heavy.
