Hello all, and thanks for watching! I wanted to take a second to address some of the recurring questions and comments. 1. "WotC just published the official story summary and you're wrong about (thing)" - Yes, true, they published that the same day I published my video, but that means I had written and recorded it earlier in the week, before we had full knowledge of things like the source of Elspeth's new spear or how things would wind up with Daxos. Life on the internet moves fast, and I did the best I could with the information I had available at the time. 2. "Isn't Elspeth from (plane?)" - Nope. We officially do not know where she's from. We only know it was a world inhabited by Phrexians, but not New Phyrexia. 3. "Didn't she go to Bant first?" - Her first planeswalk took her to Theros where she briefly observed the gods fighting, and she picked up the dropped Sword of Chaos. Sensing that a world full of fighting gods would not be the peaceful home she was after, she bounced out of there pretty quick, and then found her way to Bant. That's why she has the sword in her art from Shards of Alara. If she went there first, she wouldn't have had the sword, right? 4. Regarding the Shadowspear, we now know it is a dark version of Heliod's spear which Elspeth did indeed retrieve from within a dream, made "real" by Ashiok. Ashiok also learned of the existence of Phyrexians from this dream, and has left Theros in pursuit of these "true nightmare creatures." 5. "Why are you picking on Hufflepuff?" - I'm not. I value all the houses equally. I just think Elspeth fits in there better than she would in Gryffindor, despite her otherwise "heroic" attributes. 6. "You should get a black backdrop and better equipment." - Magic Arcanum continues to evolve. I just moved from New York to Texas, and have spent the last month unpacking boxes and trying to settle in, while also fitting in Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. It's been a busy few weeks but now that things are returning to normal I do plan to continue upgrading my office to behave more like the studio I used to have at TCGplayer. 7. Lastly, I want to acknowledge Nicholas, a Patron whose name was left out of the credits due to an unfortunate oversight on my part. I could not make this show without the support from my patrons, and I really appreciate their continued support as Nicole and I make a show everyone can be proud of. Thanks again for watching, and let me know in the comments if you have any other questions!
In regards to #6 about getting a black backdrop and better equipment. Personally, I don't really care where you tell the story from... it could be at a dark alleyway lit up by a garbage can on fire and I will still listen to you because the way you present your story is excellent. All that matter is you are telling the story and it has your personal touch on the way you describe the lore. so to all the haters out there... stop illin' as for #5 ... SlytherIN for the wIN.
If you think about it, Elspeth's main mechanic always was making tokens and pumping them, so she's more of an inspirational leader or a cunning general than a fighter herself And I think there's a place for a character who's willing to fight to protect others, lose, but inspire others and lead by example and there is a way to make such a character appealing
Thank you much my dude. I got introduced to the game in Mirage, ice age, 4th era. Attention has been on and off. Life, career and stresses, such n such. Collections lost and sold. Diblling and dabbling thoroughout the years, the game has never lost its appeal to me. I love the lore of this multiverse and the many improvisions, implications and interpretations. Your good at what your doing, I got my spark again! I just wanted to say that. Keep going.
From the cards that I've seen it looks like Heliod loses to Erobos and is sent to the underworld to hold a very large sphere, possibly the heavens, as penance. So maybe she escapes with her life and lives happily on the plane. Like you said wizards isn't giving us a story to go along with this, major ball dropped with that.
I think you left out a crucial part of the story when she meets Ajani Goldmane and he sort of prevents her from going down a darker path like being a gladiator or something. Good vid tho. Will there be any roadmap for the coming weeks or January and February in general?
She initially met him on Alara where she found him heavily wounded and treated his wounds. she then planeswalked to Urborg where she did become a gladiator and Ajani went to talk her out of that and to come back with him to Alara. She refused and he left to give her time to calm down. It's also in the arena where she actually meets Koth and that's why she ends up on mirrodin. (there's an online comic that covers this event somewhere).
Sadly, this was the ONE story that I'd have loved to read a book on. You said it yourself that Elspeth was a simple character, but I'd think that after going through this, she'd be a much different character.
Elspeth would Certainly recreate Serra's realm if she could Edit: Elspeth was made to be stronger than Heliod and certainly would use her sudden power boost to recreate Serra's realm if she knew about it
Ah, excellent. I need things to do for this last hour before the pre-prerelease, and waiting is hard. And well, what better way to do so than re-learn the lore over again!
Theros is my favorite plane and Elspeth on of my favorite characters, great video. Can you please talk about the gods we will not be seeing in TBD in your next vid, thanks!
Worth noting: the official TLA for Theros Beyond Death is not TBD, but THB--presumably because WotC didn't want people thinking it was "To Be Determined". This has led to my wife calling the set "Theros Heyond Beath", which I love.

Dude, Wizards should pay you to keep making these vids. You are doing their job at making and maintaining awareness of their lore. Another solid vid! Looking forward to the next theros vid!
Thanks for these!! I know you could do a lot of things differently production wise to be like it was with TCGPlayer, but like many others, I come here for you're story telling! Keep up the great work of trying to make the most disconnected story of all time connected. It makes the cards feel so much better honestly
Thanks for this video! I've always loved Elspeth's art (made the right decision to stock up on her cards before Theros: Beyond Death was announced and they shot up in price) and now I get to know her story!
I love that even back in theros it illuded to Elspeth being Angelic, making her soldiers be able to fly. Which is a very fun and smart way to explain that!
I think that the premise of Elspeth being this knight who's compelled to fight and get into these messes trying to do good, even when she's not really proficient or lucky enough to fully succeed, is an interesting one with which to do some kind of arc about the folly of that sort of character... but that's a level of nuance that I don't imagine Wizards will (or should, arguably) try to deal with in a Magic set story.
nice review mate. Elspeth is my favourite mtg char. She is sooo humane. She is weak & uses anything she can to win. She is clever. She indeed loses everywhere so that for me was a good for a development before s1 was born & being overpower. But when Heliod killed her i said wtf!!! All for nothing? It felt for me like my favourite character dies in the book for nothing, without acomplishing any of her aims. I m pretty sure she will have a good ending
I feel like this time around the lore will be based around revealing things from the past as we go on. Not only do we have a lack of information on Elspeth's past, but we also have a mystery behind what happened to the Kenrith's father.
Your videos have definitely opened my eyes to the lore and I've started listening to lore and books at work. I know you will be busy with theros stuff for awhile but a video on Davriel and explaining the worldsouls would be awesome! Keep up the good work!
Elspeth is one of my favorite characters after Lili of course, mainly bc i used both in a D&D campaign as being twin sisters polymorthed as gnomes later to be discovered they were originally angels as Akroma their mom and Rakdos their dad before he was cast out from the Astral Sea for having kids (big no-no among the gods and their angels) and thus becoming a demon :)
On the topic of Bant's knights: the lore actually zig-zags the fact that they have a disadvantage coming from a planar shard in which there was essentialy ritualistic one-on-one fights (symbolyzed by Exalted). Look at the flavor text from Jund Hackblade from Alara Reborn, they were surprised because an ax-crazy goblin berserker didn't wait for them to finish their prayers before attacking. At least they seem to have caught up quickly, as seen in Shield of the Righteous, which a Bant knight strapped to his back to compensate for his armor not protecting him from being struck in the back (which is probably a big problem when fighting zombies or goblins).
I agee that Elspeth would be far more at home on Eldraine, but I think she would find a personal connection with Dominaria, who held off the Phyrexians and actually defeated them thanks to the efforts of Lord Windgrace, Karn, Freyalise, Jeska, and (surprisingly) Nico Bolas. The conflict might ignite a personal connection with Elspeth. On another side of the same coin, maybe she would want to get as far away from the Phyrexian's as possible, to a plane that hasn't even gotten involved with them yet. Eldraine would seem like a very good spot for Elspeth in that case and I'm sure that Kenrith and Linden would welcome someone of her skill with open arms. If she keeps her ability to constantly make soldiers, she would prove to be a valuable asset in times of war against the Wilds (or otherworldly threats). Perhaps, in the future, she may even join Gatewatch as a replacement for Gideon as she searches for a haven to call her own. It seems like she could actually relate to Gideon and the other members since they constantly fight against beings that threaten planes, such as the Eldrazi and Nico Bolas. She isn't a perfect reflection of the noble hero that was Gideon, but she still fights for people who cannot defend themselves.

Do you have a source on that because everything I've seen says Theros came first. Otherwise how would she have the sword in the art of her Shards of Alara card?
Elspeth has been on the rough side of magic for a while, I mean in the mirrodin block the phyrexians needed to win to keep them as really good villains, and Theros was based on greek mythology and what where the greeks into? Tragedy! by the way I actually have the books for Theros, and she was the one that killed Daxos, I think the trailers for the theros block do a nice job summing up the events, Nice video!
Magic Arcanum: "Who is Elspeth?" Me: My favorite MTG character, since I started playing! Magic Arcanum: "...one of my favorite planes, Theros." Me: I agree wholeheartedly.
One of the story on the cards entries on the mothership mentioned that Ashiok learns about Phyrexians from Elspeth's nightmares. Maybe this is foreshadowing for another set on New Phyrexia ...
While you are correct that Elspeth and Davriel want similar things, they differ in what Davriel is willing to do that Elspeth can’t: namely, ignoring people. Elspeth can’t ignore when innocent people are in danger nor when evil beings (especially the Phyrexians) are doing their thing. Davriel could not care less about such things. Of course, sadly, that’s why she suffers. I suppose it’s one of those recurring ironic things when it comes to heroic characters.
Loved the short, sweet, easy to understand summary! It kind of hurt to hear you skip over all the Mirrodin fun with Venser, Karn, Melira, and Ezuri, and leave out her bff Ajani, but you gotta do what you gotta do lol. Love the channel!
I like to believe the -7 on Sun's Champion represents her channeling the power of Heliod to make her allies into angels, as the effect is very similar to that of Serra's Embrace, which is implied to do the same thing, as per its 7th edition flavor text
I'm a bit late to the party but from what is see i can tell that the best thing I wanted from tcg now has his own channel? That's worth 5$ I'm just glad I get to listen to a lot more storys, I mean I just love it. Also pherexia would really be an amazing topic 😅. Now all I want is an Cardback for MTG Arena that says, " Magic Arcanum with Ryan Gomez. And in small letters," get your story time here. Okay anyway I'm just glad that you keep this up, happy to support you and until next time.
Well, wizards did publish a small text about TBD Lore. There they explain, how ashiok came to knew of the phyrexians and is now trying to find them. Fun times ahead.
12:30 I'm trying to create a Mtg custom plane called Queletaqua, which is pretty much inspired by the Native Americans and one of the basic concepts was that is finally a peaceful world in the list of all those at war around it. Somebody comvince Wizards to take this idea and Elspeth will have a calm place to settle down. I mean just imagine the scene of Elspeth waking up in a quiet cottage and going out to see the beautiful wilderness around her and with a deep breath realising, that she has finally found peace and is free from her bonds.
The build up to phyrexians with elspeth's spear looking like it has phyrexian oil on it and ashiok going to look for them makes me feel as if phyrexians are going to be the next big bad again.
There's definitely a Phyrexia logo on the Shadowspear. Shadowspear has batterskull-ish abilities. Also, she killed Daxos, thinking he was an Obliterator, a while ago. Elspeth escaping the underworld is similar to Elspeth escaping New Phyrexia. Ashiok may be messing with people, but there's Phyrexia all over in subtle hints with this so far. Don't know where Elspeth from, but that's Phyrexian overrun there. Just connecting Phyrexia in a lot with this one.
Its not much, especially given her story - but I've seen conversations about the dark liquid looking substance falling from her new spear... oil? The theory goes that if she can pull something physical from a dream and wield it, why couldn't phyrexian oil also linger into reality! Who knows, maybe we get phyrexian gods.

I just saved you 4 years and 40000 dollars, *cashier sound*. Best. Quote. EVER.
One of the story on the cards entries on the mothership mentioned that Ashiok learns about Phyrexians from Elspeth's nightmares. Maybe this is foreshadowing for another set on New Phyrexia ...
Along with Karn grabbing the Scylex on dominaria I'd be surprised if we don't return by the end of next year.
Loved the reference to Children of the Nameless. Great book!
Love your show, Ryan!
Thanks!
Thanks for your great content!
Davriel is my spirit animal.
Elspeth is my favorite planeswalker! W00t Lore video lets watch it! ... *watches* I feel so attacked right now.
There is a reason Elspeth's major ability is to call for help....
Glad you found me, and thanks for the support!
Been following you for awhile. Commenting for the algorithm gods.
Appreciate it!
Well, wizards did publish a small text about TBD Lore. There they explain, how ashiok came to knew of the phyrexians and is now trying to find them. Fun times ahead.
Oh dang. For some reason I never noticed she had a Mirrodin card. Like I knew of the card itself but didn't realize which set it was in.
I want to see Elspeth as the new Blade of the Boros Legion
12:30 I'm trying to create a Mtg custom plane called Queletaqua, which is pretty much inspired by the Native Americans and one of the basic concepts was that is finally a peaceful world in the list of all those at war around it. Somebody comvince Wizards to take this idea and Elspeth will have a calm place to settle down. I mean just imagine the scene of Elspeth waking up in a quiet cottage and going out to see the beautiful wilderness around her and with a deep breath realising, that she has finally found peace and is free from her bonds.
I HAVE WAITED FOR THIS DAY
I just wanna a say.....
I LOVE YOU VIDEOS
The build up to phyrexians with elspeth's spear looking like it has phyrexian oil on it and ashiok going to look for them makes me feel as if phyrexians are going to be the next big bad again.
Elspeth will turn out to be a Phyrexian
There's definitely a Phyrexia logo on the Shadowspear.
Shadowspear has batterskull-ish abilities.
Also, she killed Daxos, thinking he was an Obliterator, a while ago.
Elspeth escaping the underworld is similar to Elspeth escaping New Phyrexia.
Ashiok may be messing with people, but there's Phyrexia all over in subtle hints with this so far.
Don't know where Elspeth from, but that's Phyrexian overrun there.
Just connecting Phyrexia in a lot with this one.
Yay! Great to see ya Ryan.
Have you heard the theories about the phyrexians and theros with beyond death?
I haven't heard any specific theories, no! I heard people suggest the Titans were Eldrazi though...
@@MagicArcanum Personally, I figure Ashiok is headed for New Phyrexia because it's his hearts desire
The visual of Elspeth handing out redbull to make a flying army is awesome.
One Karen, many Kyles.
love The Wanderer and hope we get more! i name all my chars in video games “Wanderer” so when i saw her i was sold lol
The meditation realm is naturally peaceful
